I never thought so. I always thought you were going for a classy Sherlock Holmes look.

But then I'm not into drugs and I love Sherlock Holmes...

I was going for that look, thanks. It didn't occur to me until someone made a comment about stoners and for some reason I thought "please don't avatar quote me" at which point I looked at it and realized what my subconscious had picked up on.

How can you not be into drugs, and be into one of the most successful druggies in history?

I taught in the boondocks (Yamaguchi-ken), so any foreigner there was treated like a super star (or stalked), but in mid-sized kens or major cities I did see a lot of the 'look' going around. As a girl I often felt that my experience was, unfairly, much more pleasant than the boys', but I'm not exactly threatening-looking to anyone. Many assumed I was half anyway, and therefore moderately 'acceptable'.

This is interesting. So your perception is that many Asian women want to marry White men, but less Asian men want to marry White women?

I'm not saying that's incorrect and I am perfectly aware that your experience does not represent a consensus. I just find the disparity interesting.

I don't know entirely what this is referring to but yes.

Dude, you and the girl need to go out, rent this, get a big bowl of popcorn and laugh your asses off:

I know me and Plywood look similar but come on.

i dunno what happened. I copypasta'd your post to reply to it, then saw his, and replied, and basically did the worst thing imaginable.

Your cheque is obviously already in the mail.

Haha, I actually didn't even think about that! I think it's because (in the books at least) his drug use is so understated. It's not a major plot point like you'd see today. It isn't the focus. It's just something of a bad habit. Interesting how things have changed.

Sadly, zero. We are trying to keep it at two people for as long as we can handle it.
Makes sense given your description.
My life has been consumed with this project for the last two years:

Family bought this house for $450k.

Been rehabbing it for about $300k.

Sold it for $1.3 million.

Not the best return BUT I AM SO GLAD TO BE RID OF IT. At one point my girlfriend and I were living in it because I'd have to be there at all hours to monitor the various crews.
What was wrong with the house?

Roughly $500k over two years is not bad man. Congrats.

Interesting to hear a few of you have lived/taught in Japan as well!

I was over there for 5 years (2005-2010) myself.
I did the JET Programme for the first 3 years and then moved to Osaka and did a bunch of part-time gigs, primarily for GEOS GCI (they apparently went out of business a week after I left the country!) and a study/work abroad agency called Last Resort.

I have experience living in the middle-of-nowhere countryside and right in the heart of the city over there so if anybody has random questions about Japan fire away.

Speaking of Japan, check out who I met in a bar over there:

JETs represent! 'Class' of 2004-2007. Could have stayed on for a 4th and 5th year (they changed the rules), but you can only spend so much of your life drawing on kids' faces with markers. You didn't chance participate in the Awajishima All-Western Japan soccer tournament, did you?

Haha. You guys got the 'sticks treatment' too? :) I was on TV a couple of times, and they'd put me in the newspaper for the littlest things (I believe that was more to promote English, though). But, in the end I don't think I looked exotic enough for them. Inevitably I'd always get asked by my elementary school kids on the first day, "Why aren't your eyes blue?"

They put me on TV too.....without telling me!
I went to teach at an elementary school and there was randomly a cameraman at the back of the room.
I looked at the Japanese teacher for an explanation but he was already lost in his horse-racing magazine so I just went ahead and did my lesson.
The next week when I got back to my primary Junior High, all the teachers were raving about seeing me on TV!

I was in some advertising too, apparently.
One small conversation school I worked for in Osaka used me in their web advertising and I was on the front page of a newsletter for Last Resort at one point too.

Oh shit, you did GEOS GCI in osaka? I lived in Osaka working for GEOS from 06 to 09.

No kidding!? Did you know Mark Cupido??
Did you work at the Eikaiwas or the dispatch stuff??
I did dispatch so I taught at a few factories and even Kinki University for a bit.

That's only because at the time of its writing, cocaine wasn't scandalous. Holmes was a fiend. He was a fiend an alcoholic exists today. Sure, those drugs are illegal today, but even when they were legal, he abused the FUCK out of them.

That's what's so strangely endearing about him. He's a genius, but DEEPLY flawed. He has an unhealthy connection to his vices.

That whole thing only cost $450k? That is awesome.

Well I guess it was $750k total, which doesn't seem as mind blowing. Still seems like a nice bit of cash you made, though.

It was a foreclosed house and, at the time, we had just received the inheritance my grandmother left (she was a successful writer in Bangladesh, but her inheritance was tied up in her property and several people that were not her children were trying to take it).

It seemed like a good investment but so much shit went wrong.

1) Found out the guy who used to live there murdered his wife. Thankfully, not inside the house, but surprisingly this kind of guy doesn't sign title agreements correctly!

2) The first construction crew we brought in decided we were too demanding with our deadlines, so they decided to just not work until I fired them. They swore revenge, which is an awesome thing to have on your mind when you're living somewhere that people have keys to.

3) The second crew was extremely incompetent. It would take too long to list everything they did wrong, but probably the biggest issue is when the girlfriend and I were at work, they came in and sanded the atrium floor without closing any of the doors in the house. Everything I owned was covered, inside and out, with dust.

This does not even mention the time the pool motors died when I was on vacation and the pool/fountain became OVERRUN with frogs.

Eikaiwa Sanda.

Mark Cupido and I were good friends. I used to go drinking with him all the time (mostly at Captain Kangaroo)

I was teaching at a Kinki factory at some point, though the name of which slips my mind now.

Mark is a THE SHIT. What a great guy. What is he doing now?

Dude, you are literally living the plot to The Money Pit

I can't tell too much about it, but it's essentially bestowing my knowledge (and the knowledge of my business partner) upon the masses.

Remember, if you ever have need of a Quality Manager, let me know.

I'll do consulting, considering I am currently employed.

In the meantime, Goodluck!

Sounds like a ton of fun!

I've helped my dad remodel houses around where I live, but they have mostly been in the $35-$70k range, so much less of a potential hit! Still I understand how things can constantly go wrong. It's high stress definitely.

Did you disclose the wife murdering thing to your buyer?

No I never got to go to the soccer tourney but I think a bunch of my friends might have.

I was in Mie-Ken, Minami Ise-cho to be specific.
Basically go to Ise, drive about an hour south through the mountains and once you hit the ocean you're there.
It was the tiniest, most out of the way place imaginable but it was a gorgeous area and the people were insanely nice!

Indeed. Again, this is completely anecdotal, but within the ken only myself and one other girl my last year there had ever dated a local or even been asked out by one. Our JET population was small (only 60 or so), but most of the guys who had arrived single ended up with a Japanese girlfriend during at least some point in their stay. Now this could just mean that the girls in my ken were shy or preferred other JETs, as opposed to Japanese men not liking foreign women, but many remained single even though they had expressed a desire to date. And even at big get-togethers I didn't meet many others in relationships with Japanese men.

Did any of you JETers move to Tokyo afterward?

That city is like a vampire that feasts on your wallet but goddamn if it doesn't make you breathless sometimes.

Any of Japan-GAF/ex-Japan-GAF live out Fukuoka/Nagasaki way? I really loved living out there. When I first got posted out there I thought I was going out to the middle of nowhere but they ended up being really awesome out there. Not as stuck up as they are in Tokyo but not as crazy as Osaka. Just sort of casual. It was nice.

Anyone here NOT on FB?

And if No, due to relationship stuff..?

Its like a new thing. My lady and I broke up, so I was exiled from FB to save face.. i guess.. in some way for her.. Heard this a few times.

Wow, small world haha!

I wish I knew how he was doing but the only contact e-mail I have for him is his old work address (@GEOSGCI.com) which doesn't seem to exist anymore, what with the company declaring bankruptcy.

Last I saw him (March 2010), he and his wife had just had their first child (a little girl, IIRC) and he was still a higher-up at GEOS.
I hope whatever company bought them out kept him around, he was a great boss and a great friend too!

The only reason I am on Facebook is a relationship, otherwise I wouldn't bother. She insists however...

I have an account on FB but never EVER use it. Does it count? :P

No question. Mark is one of the coolest people I met living in Japan. I remember one time he saw me at Osaka Airport and said "Oh shit, thetrin....I won't tell anyone you're here"

And I was like "uuuh...I applied for vacation 6 weeks ago, but I do appreciate it!"

What do you mean you were "exiled" - like all your friends removed you or something?

All you globetrotters. I have been as far north as San Francisco, as far east as Phoenix Arizona and as far south as Tijuana(Gudalajara as a child once). I really gotta get around more.

I have had Facebook for a long time but it's definitely become a different experience for me over the years,. Used to be all friends and fun, goofy posting. Now I have so much family on there(60 or so) Including my Mother that I pretty much removed all of my acquaintances and kept it nothing but family and close friends. I don't mind however cause I have gotten to know a lot of family from mexico I have never met.

Ube was right by Shimonoseki and we'd hop over to Fukuoka all the time to hit up the Happy Cock (night club). Fukuoka also had one of the only women-allowed capsule hotels, and we'd hole up in that area for the whole weekend. Good fun. I've been to Nagasaki as well. Cool place. Did you by chance ever get around to Yufuin? I'm dying to go back there. Mountains! Hiking!! Onsens!!! *sigh*

As for Tokyo, I went there with a friend for 3 days, but I'm not a huge fan of the chaos. The buildings and lifestyle felt both bleak and oppressive at times. Night life was fun at times, though.

When I was settling into my new apartment in Osaka, I randomly got a call from Square-Enix (who I had interviewed with at the JET Job Fair) offering me a job as a "CG Programmer" (??) in Tokyo.
I had to turn it down as I had already signed a lease/job contracts in Osaka but I still wonder what my life would be like if I had gone for it. :S

On a random, yet related note: One of Square-Enix's Osaka offices was 2 floors below the study abroad agency I worked for in Umeda!

One of my best friends from college was a JET out in Fukuoka so I went to visit him every now and then. It was an awesome city with great food and nightlife!!

It is extremely claustrophobic at times, but there's a weird sort of beauty in the chaos of it all.

Just people watching in Shibuya is the most mindblowing experience.

You know, you can make lists and stuff to separate your real friends from the ones that take sides...

personally I have like 5 lists on my facebook account and post stuff that I think only certain people should see.

Call me crazy, but if the guy in your avatar is you, I think I've actually seen you (on the street or something, not talked to). I've been living in Osaka for the last (almost) 6 years. I'm moving to Fukuoka in three days, though :/

I used to live (some 5 years ago) near the Umeda Sky Building, but I think if I saw you, it was earlier.

Oh well :P

I really wanted to go out hiking more when I lived there but I never really got a chance to (except in Kyoto.) No one I knew was really into hiking and it's no fun going yourself :/ Fukuoka was a nice place to live, but I liked Nagasaki more. It has so much more history with an old town feel (which you wouldn't think considering how much of it had to be rebuilt.) I really miss it there :<

I lived in Tokyo a year before as well, and it was way too much for me. I got to experience a lot while I was there, but I felt like I could never find a place to be alone. Even going out to the park at 2am there were drunks and runners still out. I'm a complete introvert so you can imagine what this did to me. I have a lot of good memories there, but now I only like to visit. I wouldn't want to live there again.

I only use my facebook to 'like' and comment on my fiancee's posts. It seems rather redundant since we are usually sitting next to one another but whatever.

Wow, quite a bunch of Japan-GAF posting here all of a sudden!. As I said above, I'm moving to Fukuoka in a few days but the company where I'll be working has offices in Tokyo too, and they asked me if I wanted to work there. Not for now (too expensive and I would like to be within the 23 wards, hate taking a train for like 40 minutes or an hour), but might go sometime down the line. Guess most of Japan-GAF stays over there?
