True, but one has a beard that belongs in Valhalla.
I would blush, but that would be unbecoming of a Viking in training. Oddly enough, I have been getting the urge to scrap every fitness endeavor in my arsenal and go full steam ahead on muscular hypertrophy since my beard has gotten so big. I feel like I'm missing out on a calling here.

---

First day at the gym proper in a while, and I witnessed a beautiful juxtaposition. A middle-aged man loaded up the hack squat machine with 315lbs and I took note. Sadly, he was intent on bending his knees ever-so-slightly so much that it wouldn't even pass for a curtsy. Then, a regular got on and worked up to 315lbs and did ass-to-grass sets with 4-5 second pauses on the bottom of each rep.

As much as I want to shake my head at the former, I have to remind myself that at the very least, the spirit is willing. That's better than most. I'll see if that's enough for him to stick around by March.

Quick question: For Pendlay rows is 3x5 good? Or should I do 1x5 like the deadlift? Started SS a couple of weeks ago and I'm seriously thinking about replacing power cleans with Pendlay rows but I'll definitely still try and learn power clean because I understand it's quite an important lift and adds a explosive factor to the full body routine unlike the other four lifts.

All in all, I'm really enjoying lifting and find that I have increased energy levels for the rest of the day. Must be the endorphins or something.

3x5 for rows.

Think I'm just going to take this week off. I have zero motivation to go to the gym this week trying to get back into a routine with work after being home for the holidays is stressful enough.

Not to mention how I'm dreading stepping into the gym and try to deal with the wave of new years folks. One thing that was fantastic about being home in a small town and being able to go at non primetime hours is that there was never more than 10 people there at the max. Had my pick of the litter and no waiting around.

This is why I prefer going in the morning as opposed to the afternoon or later

Do you have any inclination to do bodyweight calisthenics in the meantime? Just enough so you don't feel like you've lost strength once you return, perhaps?

I wish I could, I'm just definitely not a morning person. :(

Well I went to the gym on saturday, so even if I skipped this week, it would only have been brief, but you're right. I'll probably do a few bw things to at least do a little. Maybe my body is just crying out for a break though.

So here is my question to the peeps in this thread. Why are you lifting and what are your long term goals out of it? Strength? Looks? Something to do?

For me, I've always wanted a Bruce Lee type of body. I started in October 09 and purely training for looks but as I started to learn more about the body grows and different routines and techniques, my goals started to change. Don't get me wrong, I still want to have defined body but I am focused more on strength and just getting bigger. I know that these things take time and am enjoying the ride there.

Ugh, he recommends low or non fat milk. Thats horrible and an affront to all the hardworking cows out there. Also, it tastes pretty shitty compared to normal milk.

I love skim milk, it's all I drink.

noob question but what are some good exercises for hamstrings? Any links with demonstrations?

Deadlifts, and goodmornings work wonders for your hamstrings, but goodmornings can be risky.

I'm naturally muscled, but I'm cursed with fat ass genetics too. So I'm capitalizing on my fathers genes and building a massive frame, but I'm also now in the process of getting rid of the fat.

Basically I want to look good and be strong as fuck.

Plus looking intimidating is a bonus for police work.

Well, there's the squat and the Romanian deadlift.

I enjoy getting bigger and stronger. I also fiddling with dieting and programming and reaping the rewards when it works or learning lessons when it doesn't. I enjoy how it improves my quality of life, mostly in that fact that I'm able bodied and do not suffer from much back pain ( I have a tilted pelvis so one side takes more weight than the other, however that's when standing for long periods of time.)

No fat is a joke. Tastes like crappy water.

Semi skimmed is passable but full fat rocks.

I've never understood people who don't like skim milk. Sure it tastes different than whole milk, but its not bad or anything. For a while, it was the only milk my mom bought.

Just force yourself. If you cant even be arsed to go the gym in the morning because of such a weak reason you will never become swole and awesome.

Eh, I've "forced" myself to go the gym for a year and a few months now, It's just one of those days where I don't want to deal with people. I've gotten use to going to the gym after work, and it's been working out usually.

Good article and interesting read, thanks for the link. And that pic sums it up well :)

For me when I started I just wanted to feel better, know I had a terrible diet and ate all kinds of crap, so it was just a step towards living healthier and being more confident. I had no clue at all what to do really and had a presonal trainer for a brief time, and that did help a lot to at least get into a schedule and to have an "appointment" to go to.

I eventually realized my original goals were nice, but directionless really. Now I know I want to be bigger and stronger and still keep eating healthy to keep looking lean.

I get depressed if i stay inactive for long amounts of time. Or well, depressed isnt the right word because its not like i would need medication. But i just get really unhappy with myself and just end up sitting around all day feeling miserable. When i'm active i become a lot more outgoing and social. I need a physical workout to stay mentally healthy.

For me anything other than skim tastes like shit. It's way too thick too.
Whole milk makes the best chocolate milk though
I'm glad that skim milk is the only thing that people took away from that article.
I'm one of the people that can't do any physical activity without food in my stomach. Even then, if it's too early in the morning, I can't do it effectively anyways haha. And I think it was discussed earlier in the thread, but isn't there something about spinal compression and that you should wait to let your spine decompress or something after you wake up?

I haven't got my wife on squats just yet because she's really anxious about her form with all the heavy lifting. She sometimes deadlifts, but she's a real ace on the press. Squats would be nice, but she's more comfortable with weighted lunges and I support her in whatever she chooses to do. There's no rule that you have to squat, at least for anyone who isn't a powerlifter.

There is only one calling, the calling of the Technoviking.

Haha, I could totally do that.

I'm shocked to read that this video is from the year 2000. I remember watching it a decade ago.

I have my strength goals on paper, which have my full, undivided attention. By reaching them it won't be an accident that I'll surpass my other wants of an appreciable aesthetic. I used to want to look like other folk, be it Bruce Lee or Frank Zane or the Farnese Hercules or whomever - but going for my strength and conditioning goals I will be me. But better.

My wife doesn't lift at all, but I can't complain at all either. She cooks, cleans and takes care of my son. She does way more than I do in regard to taking care of the house and him. Plus she's naturally skinny. So I'd be an asshole to complain at her.

Also, technoviking today is even more of a beast.

Look at the lower body on her, also, she's damn strong.

I wish I could get my wife to do some squats and stuff.

Also, I think Zuzana is gone from that bodyrock channel. It's some weird super thin annoying lady now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdyy6Hy5XRg
Never seen bodyrock before but checked out that vid.

Don't see how watching others exercise is entertaining. Watching form videos is all good but it feels uncomfortable watching someone pant and go crazy. Probably just me :lol

Wait, no word on where Zuzana went?

They just casually replace her, disable comments and expect no one to notice the difference?

Good or bad idea to drink a huge shake after workout? I do something like milk + whey + 2 bananas + some low fat coconut milk + peanut butter, but is that overkill? Can the body actually process all that? Or should I split it up a bit more?

Problem for me is after a workout I am so tired that I don't immediately make dinner, and I wanted to try to counteract on that with a meal replacement shake.

What are you goals? Gaining mass or losing body fat?

What do you mean Back? Explain yourself

She did some soft core shit before. Just google her and you'll see it. No penetration though.

Watching other people exercise isn't entertaining. Watching Zuzana is very.... entertaining.

This.

Also, I like watching other videos because of the feats of strength shown, it's motivation.

Plus gym fails are always entertaining.

thanks for ruining my dad guys. shitty video

Jesus, you're younger looking than I imagined.

Sorry, but it had to be done, Zuzana needs to return.

It doesn't matter as long as you're well fed to begin with.

Personally I do breakfast and 4 tablesoons of peanutbutter prior to workout or a greek yogurt and a double shake prior to work out (46g protein) and then do another double shake after workout followed up with lunch about an hour later.

Breakfast is typically greek yogurt, fruit, and maybe a breakfast sandwich, cereal or oatmeal. But it's always at least greek yogurt.

I typically go to work out about an hour after breakfast, so the morning double shake is basically also included in breakfast.

260 lbs? Noooooooooooooo problem.

Grats man, are you just working up to 1x5 for squats?

Your spine is decompressed in the morning, and walking around all days compresses thanks to gravity. If this is the reason someone won't workout in the morning, then it's a pretty poor reason since you can easily decompress your spine by hanging off of a chin bar for a minute or so.

Haha, it's all good. I'd rather take a brief break instead of going to the gym and half ass it anyway.

So tell us what your routine so taxing that you need a week off? Are you really going to let yourself sink back into obscurity in the year of 2012?
