There are moe elements, there are moe character archetypes, and moe visual design. The show uses the "moe" as it can be objectively defined as an element of media to its advantage in order to pander to the audience that traditionally eats it up. Add in some faux-intellectual bullshit, and you have yourself a show that will pander to an otaku's need for the cute AND their need to be intellectually "superior" to their more "normal" peers. You ever wonder why it's popular around here? :P

You know, that doesn't actually explain anything!
When someone asks what you mean by "moe principles", I don't think "moe moe moe" is a helpful answer.

Exactly!

The first episode is easily the best. It's all downhill from there. bailout.gif

There are good bits and I guess I didn't totally hate it, but mostly it is a waste of time, talent, and potential. Of course, I'm in the minority on this, but you don't need to be popular to be right!
Story of Yuasa's career as a director

People hate Madoka for the moe elements but ranked the K-On! girls 5 page earlier.

It's irony at its finest. The most vocal Madoka critics in here are the ones who can't stand anybody saying anything bad about K-On.

Of course I wouldn't expect anything different from people who hate Yuasa.

Working'!! 10

Another Inami focused episode that wasn't terrible. And one where I didn't hate Takanashi. So good going show!

But, the short bits with Yamada were still the best parts of the episode.

Something went wrong, I started the show and was pretty annoyed at the huge Inami focus and the whole thing between her and Takanashi and yet by the end of season 2 I was eating up every scene involving them like it was moe-flavored candy.

I'm still not sure what happened there. It's a mystery.

It's pretty noteworthy how everything Masaaki Yuasa has directed in his career is amazing. That dude is crazy talented and I only hope that in the world of the 'new' Madhouse someone will fund his brilliant, exciting works.

Le syndrome de Stockholm, monsieur.

Another depressing episode? Damn, this is starting to wear on me. I'm too invested in these characters to see bad things happen to or around them :(

For what it's worth, it never gets quite as masturbatory as the end of Mind Game. Maybe just a little bit instead of all over your face.
The ending of Mind Game is really bad. I probably wouldn't dislike it so much if it wasn't for that. Like, the rest of it was pretty mediocre and masturbatory but it kicked into high gear for the ending. Like, holy shit.

I think even the stupidest viewer of all time could understand the symbolism behind that scene even if it only ran for about 45 seconds. Too bad it ran for like ten minutes.

Sooo Evangelion with moé instead of mecha.

If by "carefully examines and explore" you really mean "feels up" then I totally agree with you.

If any of his waifus have breast cancer then by god Araragi-kun will find it.

Well I wasn't being entirely serious, as per the end of my post. The show usually works on the 'here's how this character type would react in a normal anime but because we're going to be different we're going to break that expectation in a really blunt and unsubtle manner.'

Mami > all for me

even if by the end of the show she actually becomes one of the weakest characters

i just have a thing for drill hair ok

New Prince of Tennis - 01

And not a single dinosaur went extinct.

cg cars... WHY!? Surely every studio in anime are aware that cg cars look like dog shit, so why keep at it.

A lot of anime that are called "Deconstructions" probably aren't, or at least not as much as people think. Personally the closest I've seen to a genre deconstruction in anime is School Days, but even that went batshit bonkers toward the end.

It's alright, no one is judging you. I'm sure plenty of folks here like the drill hair as well, assuming it's restrained somewhat. Just take a look at the OP to see that much worse things have been brought to light.

I don't think Yuasa has directed anything that wasn't at the least memorable. I think even Yuasa haters will haft to admit that at least!

The ending of Mind Game is like awe-inspiring; and probably one of the most memorable sequences in animu history, a good thing can last as long as it wants! there is no limits to how you express art.

You're assuming too much out of people who hate Yuasa.

Sayaka > Kyoko > Mami > Madoka > Homura. Best yuri pairing gets best rankings.

I like Yuasa... but the last episodes of Kemonozume left me cold. And barely remembering what happened.

Ending to Mind Game as dragged out as the ending to LOTR: ROTK

You know, I was going to rewatch Zeta Gandamu, but I decided to give

Chihayafuru 1 a try

And goddamn, it is GOOD. In the fall thread, I said I don't really like watching shoujosei romances, but this is too good to pass up!

I'd say you made a wise move on both counts.

Damn, not even Katawa Shoujo could get me to pull an all-nighter.

oh my god

Hamdo in the dub was really fucking disturbing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQIbOTZKQKE

This show should be watched dubbed. I have never watched it subbed but I'm pretty sure it sucks by comparison.

Evangeline > Zazie > Nodoka > Yue > Natsumi > Chachamaru > Setsuna > Chao > Mana > Ako > Akira > Haruna > Konoka > Makie > Ku Fei > Sayo > Chisame > Kaede > Satomi > Asuna > Ayaka > Kasumi > Madoka > Chizuru > Yuuna > Satsuki > Misora > Fumika > Misa > Sakurako > Fuuka

That was entirely your fault.

I am impressed! Did you base this on the stupid boring original Negima series or the reworked superior one with the confusing punctuations?

Yes, but what is moe?

A manifestation of hnnngh.

Japanese Hamdo was more disturbing because it was the voice actor who played Kimura in Azumanga Daioh.

Hmm. Maybe I have to check out the subbed audio after all.

Fuck the intellectuals. Its about cute girls and violence. And strange little cat things.

What is this? All I see are boring words and some boxes, and what appears to be deconstructions on the right side.

Honestly we need more SZS pandering.

WHAT IS THIS? I am interested. In the art. Yes. The artwork.

If you keep on trying to be 7Th Jr. eventually you'll start to like Mind Game and then we can't be friends anymore.

Or replace "friends" with that one Japanese word if you're a smelly nerd.

dun dun dun

You are a meanie head and Mindgame is great.

You know, Bakemonogatari is actually a meta-otaku piece of commentary that carefully examines and explored various 'female archetypes' found in anime through self-aware humour.

Then is exploits them for the purposes of fanservice.

What can I say? Its super effective!

Sayaka was the cutest one out of them all! She's basically the Saber of the Madokas, though. As in, terrible.

Nothing wrong with Saber. However, Sayaka is no Saber.

You forgot
foreveralone
as well.

Homura, being the Archer of the group, is naturally the best.

This is true. Homu Homu is best Homu.

It is. I loved the ending. But I especially love
the whole sequence escaping the dying whale

Well, I felt the same though at the end of season 1. I didn't mind all the focus Inami got and was hoping they would get together or something.

But, rolling into season 2, and Takanashi pretty much got all jerkish midway wanted me to just see her punch him to the moon.

I'm pretty sure it's just me getting used to it being the Inami show featuring a bunch of other more enjoyable people that made me stick around.

Has it been licensed?

It's been licensed by Media Blaster, so dunno what happened to that.

Working'!! 11
Hey, three different stories mashed together into one.
Yamada and the search for Daisy was awesome, being filled with Yamada.
Hanging out with Nazuna and the other sisters was ok.
And the other love story with Yachiyo and Satou was pretty slow. But, hey got christmas tree and drill hair Polar. So I guess it wasn't a bad episode.

Takanashi just became more of a character and less of an inconsequential, reactionary glass window for the audience to look through.

Seen Honey and clover. not the other ones.

Well consider this an intervention NODAME CANTIBILE!!

How many instances of heart stoppage should the average viewer undergo while watching this film?

You're dealing with college people, much like Honey and Clover but without a loli.

Damn this won't work.

Main girl is crazy, in a non-yandere funny way, hey that goes for Skip Beat to, but in that case she's batshit insane.

So I just finished Penguindrum. I had no idea what happened so I will go read GAF posts about the ending later but I gotta say that apple picture in the official penguins thread explains a lot of shit.

Is Utena more straightforward or should I expect another mindfuck?

I'd say Utena is not more straightforward, but things are wrapped up more neatly.

It is definitely more straightforward than MPD.
