Money was a factor in both getting not just the rights, but setting up studios and hiring lyricists and vocalists for the job. It was also remember years back it mentioning that prices for proper licensing was higher here in the States than it is for other countries. Macross 7 is one such issue as Animeigo tried for it back in '98 and they had to pay two licenses, one for the animation and the other for the music. It was so steep they dropped away, and no one else touched it for the same reason.

That's not to say some companies tried to do something.

Though Viz did not dub their opening and closing songs they subtitled the songs in a way to sing-along if one wanted to. This did not do very well, as I remember a great deal of anger over that. This was the early to late nineties.

Geneon, Pioneer back then, actually did dub songs for Tenchi Muyo and El Hazard.

I'm of the opinion that the two english ops for El Hazard were superior than their originals. Unfortunately, in time they stopped doing so.

Funimation was the next one to dub their songs. What they did however, was actually employ a band to play the music while the vocalist sang. Take a look at those early dubs for YYH and some others like Blue Gender, and notice the music for the english songs are slightly different than the originals. I'm thinking that they had issues getting the right tracks for those at the time, as their more current dub songs, when they do dub them musically sound identical to the originals.

Of course, it does help when the actual band allows you to even have the song overseas, as TOKIO denied any right to play 7'O Clock News, the opening for Kodocha in any language for its domestic release. Funimation actually apologizes for that in a menu option in that first dvd. Similarly, L'Arc-en-Ciel's Fourth Ave Cafe was pulled from the english Rurouni Kenshin releases, but that was due to a band member being arrested.

With more and more opening and ending songs being used to push bands, its much harder to get not just the licenses, but the rights to dub them too, so that is one of the reasons why they'll dub some songs for one series and none for another.

I think I might just have a poor reference pool, actually; I didn't really get "into" anime until 5-6 years ago, so most of my experience was with whatever was aired on US cable TV, including the stuff in the mid-late 90s/early 00s that they tried to forcibly restructure like American Saturday morning cartoons. Regrettably, I never bothered to actively follow the good stuff that was on Toonami/Adult Swim (Bebop, Gundam, etc.) with a few exceptions.

Some of them are quite good. The singing on the Fruits Basket OP dub is technically much better that Ritsuko Okazaki's (RIP), although the lyrics don't rhyme, which is a bit annoying.

Actually, the FuruBa dub in general was pretty good.

Like I mentioned before, I only know the more mainstream stuff, but Funimation's put in a great amount of effort on their One Piece releases since 2008, dubbing every single OP and ED song so far, seventeen in all. A few work better than others, but overall I think they're pretty good.

Megumi got what was coming to her which was the highlight of the series. Overall unsatisfying ending and the manga end wasn't any better. Obviously they wanted you to sympathize a bit with the vampires but it doesn't work. There were a few like Torou who you could kind side with if he wasn't such a wuss.

Conclusion: Awesome episode was awesome. The ED is indeed very :cajun.


Next week: Maxing out social links from Yu's perspective. I was kinda hoping they'd start the Naoto arc already but I'll just have to wait.

Anywho finished watch Giant Killing & well sports anime is now looking mighty appealing to me. A friend recommended Cross Game which I'm watching now (ep 4). I was wondering if anyone else has see the series in full? How did you like it? Oh & by extension of what I wrote I will be watching New Prince of Tennis.

I have only read the manga for Cross Game, but it's top tier. It's not really that much sports focused since it is lol baseball after all, but the characters are great. I'm not sure if the anime adaptation is bad, but they really can't fuck it up that much.

Pretty much, yeah. It was a case of too little too late, if you ask me. And the fact the
vampire loli bitch made it out
was incredibly infuriating.

I still had fun with the show.

What a meta episode. Anime is being destroyed and the only one who can save it is Sailor Moon. The show starts off with director Asataou (gee I wonder who he is based off of) chewing out the two lowly animators who are just trying to catch a break, but in his defense Sailor V should be super moe sexy like he wanted.

Ami just saw right through the weak disguise Nephrite was putting up even though he was speeding at 100 MPH
. Somehow nobody has the ability to see through the Sailors uniforms even though they don’t cover their face!

Hiromi is such a terrible friend. If you make a promise with somebody then don’t break it. She deserved what she got :(

Ami being a boss. Why is she standing on top of the car? I think it’s a fairer question to ask why aren’t more anime characters standing on top of cars. Too bad her time as a boss was short lived
as Nephrite judo chops her off the top of his car.

Not cool Rei. You’re breaking my heart. Oh I get it now, she’s just being tsundere about her love for anime. Rei is truly the best. LOL at Ami’s not so subtle put down of poor Rei.

Nephrite and Zoisite so have much tension growing between them I can feel the homolust radiating through my screen. BAH GAWD, Hiromi is truly evil.

Fight itself was meh until the three girls used their
ULTIMATE ATTACK. Jesus that was cool.
Bet they never use that again. That song that was played during the fight was great though.

All in all a great episode. I do get a kick out of the making an anime in an anime episode. Friendship is truly magic.

This is an Ikuraha episode and... okay I don't actually have anything to say about the episode.

Speaking if Ikuhara this remix of the Penguindrums second opening is pretty good: Dat drop.

Okay so I only brought this episode up to share that track, oh well.

edit: I'm making surprisingly fast progress, maybe it's because I don't feel the need to type long posts with screenshots.
