Seems like it could be a good time, hard to tell what its going to be like from the first episode. Not the greatest looking show, the cg cars and ships are pretty ugly. Characters seem fun, and there is Chiaki Omigawa duckroll's favorite VA doing her thing. Hopefully we get to the actual pirating sooner than later.

Hachikuji could actually be used to draw out an interesting little facet of character in Araragi, and I now that I say that; I can actually see that they started to, but when when aspects of it are so very orchestrated to appeal to a certain crowd, it's really hard for me to take as seriously they want it to be. Araragi feels as if he's abnormal and can't relate to anyone but the equally abnormal, so he uses Hachikuji/Shinobu to find the comradeship he feels lost with his younger sisters,

that's some solid character building. smh, really.

I really go agree. I think there was good character work and interaction in that part. It's just kind of, er, buried, under other stuff which they could have toned down (read: not had at all).

I'm getting this done before the end of the weekend hopefully, and the real episode 14 is a recap, so unless it's an Utena style recap, plodding along.

Well, duh.

The dialogue in this episode was not good. It was, in fact, bad and this wasn't helped by the subtitles not matching up to the audio on my DVD. It's pretty clear that no one bothered to watch through this episode to check that it was all synchronised up. Ah well.

More troubling even then that is the direction this episode. It was directed by Mamoru Emomoto who you may remember from, well, not much. I can't speak about his other works but right here it seems like he hasn't directed an anime episode before. There's an attempt at pacing, plot, action and talking but the flow is all wrong. Every scene runs too long or too short. Each cut feels awkward and wrong. The action scenes are especially bad with no build up, tension or climax. There doesn't seem to be a structure to any of it. Most of the time you don't notice direction unless it's in your face like Shinbo or really crap (in before "they're the same thing). This is the 'crap variety'. He can't actually direct a conversation between children.

Oh, the use of music was terrible again. It's either inappropriately timed, bizarre or not there at all. The 'fight music' stopped in the middle of the fight scene for no appropriate reason. I don't get it.
