I assume you guys mean
becoming the ruler of Albion and then having to bankrupt your kingdom or be evil? Or -- and I already suspected this would happen -- is something coming which makes all those decisions meaningless?

Yes.

But the speed and abruptness at which this happens is crazy. You're deliberately mislead by the game as to the timing of its impending..ness.

I have to say, as cheesy as it is on a gaming forum, but Left 4 Dead did Zombies right. Massive hordes that can overwhelm you in numbers mixed with bad ass zombie mutations all making you very fearful that you will not survive the night.

Yeah. It is quite fun with a few of your mates.

Yes, but Dead Rising went the opposite direction and also did zombies right.

Zombies suck and are played out.

Depends on what you do with the concept.

They tend to be overused in video games because it's an easy way for the developer to repeat models without it being extremely noticeable. The L4D-style hordes would be boring with, say...Lycans, but have far fewer enemies if every person were different (and a lot more noticeable if they weren't).

I do admit that I was a lot less interested in Last of Us when the zombie-like monsters showed up.

I did like
"you will have a year to prepare", one day passes, "254 days remain..." What?

Once I realised that I could just ignore the impending doom counter and head out and do whatever I wanted it became a lot less of a problem.

The world design is surprisingly enjoyable though. I'm tiring of Beth-style worlds which start out their life in a terrain generator, the worlds in Fable III and The Witcher 2 are just so much more appealing to explore because they feel so authentic. There are all of these little pockets of beautiful scenery which are just there because an artist worked over lunch one day while they were on a roll.

Edit: also, zombies are the new Nazis. Hollywood and the games industry need enemies who are human but sufficiently dehumanised that they can get away with murdering and torturing them en masse under the banner of entertainment.

Another great game. I don't understand why Capcom hands their IPs over to a western developer only for them to take a dump on it. Dead Rising was a great game, but it did have its faults. They did hard bit already by creating a completely new IP from scratch. All they had to do was improve on it for the sequel. :(

I felt Dead Rising 2 was a good sequel to DR1.

Off the Record, however, was not.

Zombie movies, television shows and comic books have the same progression as a zombie infection. At first it's one or two, and everyone laughs and goes to watch them shamble along amusingly, but then they get out of their cages and suddenly they're fucking everywhere and you're like god DAMN if I never see another zombie I'll be a happy man, but you turn the corner and there's three more standing there doing jack shit, so you roll your eyes and sigh and try to ignore them, but five months later you can't ignore them because they've taken over and they're in your movie theatres and on your television and in your bookstores and you can't stop puking and you just CAN'T STOP PUKING.

I didn't think DR2 was a bad game, but it would have been more accurately called "Dead Rising Again."

This is why zombie outbreaks almost always work better in media res.

Looking at zombie stuff that works (Left 4 Dead, Walking Dead, Resident Evil/2/4, Dead Rising, 28 Days Later), the outbreak has already happened and it's the survivors dealing with that shit, or in the case of RE4, blowing away all that shit.

It becomes more about surviving the apocalypse where the world wants you dead than it is the beginning and progression of the end of the world.

They are now. When Dead Rising came out, it wasn't though. Of course there were the Resident Evil games, but Dead Rising didn't play like that at all. It was more like a B-movie.

Yeah, Dead Rising was pretty fun, I bought it for the 360 an-- hold on...just hold on...I have to take this call...

I feel it would have been better to leave it to the same team that did the first one.

Ehh. Blue Castle barely did any actual design work on the game. For all of Inafune's insistence that western game design is superior, he babied that project from the design doc to going gold.

DR3 is going to be the real test.

I loved DR2 and liked DR1. DR1 was one of the main reasons I bought a 360 but I gave up on the part with the bombs. I loved the photography mechanic.

Shaun of the Dead is probably the only really good modern example of a "this is how it starts" zombie movie. But that movie's focus was also really different, since the intention was to be funny.

Wright was also trying to make the point that everyone was already a zombie, anyway. The hunger for flesh didn't really change much.

I played the original and didn't really get that it's actually a Roguelike in disguise, once I understood that the second game was a bit more fun. Dead Island blew both of them away though.

You might like Off the Record, then. The reason I didn't like it is that it changed a lot of what DR was to me and added things like auto-saving and checkpoints, but it still has the photography mechanics and is a little more forgiving.

What does "full helicopter" mean?

Dancing so hard naked that the "blade" is spinning around like a helicopter

Edit: On topic....

I've wanted to try and start an Internet conspiracy just to see how easily it could take off. I haven't worked out all the details, but it would center around the fact that zombies are everywhere. They're on TV, commercials, books, comics, movies, radio, everywhere... I want to try and start a conspiracy theory that says the governments of the world are doing this intentionally to prepare the world for what they've already seen and are having a hard time containing... the first outbreak in some remote area of some 3rd world village.

I think I could pull it off to capture the attention of a few crazies if I set my mind to it.

Have you seen how far away they're removing that film from the actual subject matter?

Don't dance on my dreams :|

edit: Next I will find out 'All You Need Is Kill' is being adapted by Hollywood with all white actors...oh dammit

edit: AND Oldboy? WHY do I read into these things.

Don't be greedy.... :p oh but shit, I did just find this one I made too, don't even remember making it tbh, wtf;

[edit] just realized this is basically a copy/updated version of the one (pancakes?) made way earlier in the thread, lol.

I wish I could take credit for that earlier image. It must've been one of the master-race aviatorGAF that made it.

I removed all traces of zombies from a novel I was working on. Originally I set out to do "a good version of Land of the Dead" back in 2006. The idea is just too played out at this point though.

They will cycle back.

In the mid-90s I wrote a zombie script and everyone was saying that zombies were lame and corny.

If only I could have sold it.

You should put them back in and use them to sell the book, but then totally subvert the reader's expectations and make them these really civilised philosophers who have been hunted unfairly by foolish humans.

i like that. the more brains a zombie eats the more their brains revert back to civillized humans. if they continue they get even smarter than humans.

and once they start getting semi-intelligent, they start only eating the rapists/murderers/outlaws.

do it up

I think Will Smith should be the lead for the future movie adaptation.

Or make the novel about the stream-of-consciousness experience of a true-to-life zombie, who is totally paralyzed but unable to die and whose brain is slowly decomposing while all he can do is lie there and feel himself getting less and less self aware.

BRAINS FOR ALGERNON or ZOMBY

But philosophers are useless, unless they write in dense, unyieldingly impenetrable German.
