Also, Sqorgar, do you find it a hassle to re-stack plates and such after building with them? I like the way your collection looks now, but it seems like it'd be a hassle after the fact. :\
It's not bad at all. Obviously, it's more work than throwing everything in a tub or keeping sets separate in baggies, but I feel like the ability to instantly find whatever piece you are looking for in whatever color you are looking for far outweighs the minor effort it takes to sort during disassembly.

Of course, it took MONTHS to sort my LEGOs in the first place, and I did it by color at first which did not work out at all.

Yeah, it hasn't been an issue for me yet, but I can tell it will go that way. I am already getting close to filling up those containers. I think I will use those just for the smaller pieces, and put the larger pieces in separate containers.
That's what I do, though I've only sorted half my LEGO collection and have found that it takes up a serious amount of space - nearly every bin and bucket here is filled so high I can barely close it:
lego_storage1.jpg

Personally, I store the smaller LEGOs (anything smaller than 2x1) in bins like that. The larger, common shapes - bricks, beams, planks, sticks, and plates - I attach together by size. For flat pieces, it helps to offset them by a stud or two to make them easier to take apart. Here's my plank drawer:

lego_storage3.jpg

It's a lot easier to find a 2x4 blue plank in a bucket of 2x4 planks than a bucket of blues. If I had the space, I'd just use buckets for each type.

thats a good idea. We store ours in a small chest of drawers, with one section per type (almost). So we have a planks drawer, broken up into 1x planks and 2x planks, then a bricks drawer broken up similarly. Then we subdivide so all 1x1 and 1x2 are together, then 1x3 and 1x4 together, then anything longer in its own section. Same with 2x and planks. Specials get their own drawer, and tiny bits go in bins. We have a ton of different little boxes with lockable lids (like tupperware I guess) for small technic bits too

Rebrickable.com is a cool site if you dig set building, for sure. And you should buy sets, build them, enjoy them, then resell them here to us LEGO fanatics!

Anyone want to swap an 8241 for an Imperial shuttle or tower bridge? :P Is there a good community for selling things on?

Breaking down lego is never fun, but you have to keep on top of it. My son has just left his to accumulate for months, and we spent the better part of the weekend getting it under control.

One thing I've always regretted was the treatment of my lego when I was younger. I have lego that equals to about 30 kits dumped in a massive box in the attic with the majority of those kit's missing pieces, broken, covered in teeth marks or gruby looking (specifically the white pieces).

I do appreciate the new models I've got now though, especally the Star Wars ones.

I've got one of these, took me about 3 hours. Spent the next 2 weeks with back pain because of my posture while building it.

Fixed, I think?

Also, Eurobricks.com and bricklink.com are the first two that come to mind. There are others, eBay and Amazon being the next two (which will net you more if they sell because un-educated LEGO people shop there for old sets), but those first two are a good start.

Taking them apart is only bad if you don't have a brick separator and if that's the only thing you're doing. I've been catching up on Lost while I dismantle shit. I can watch and pay attention while mindlessly pulling bricks apart.

Oh groan, I know how you feel. I've been inventorying my sets from the last ~15 years or so and ordering replacement parts for those pieces that were on the receiving end of dismantling frustration. Seeing tiny little teeth marks etched into hard to find pieces makes me so mad at my younger self, haha.

These Star Wars sets are so impressive. This one in particular reminds me of the Kenner Millennium Falcon my brother and I had as kids. Good memories. I don't usually collect many of the licensed Lego themes (Harry Potter being the exception) but the SW stuff always looks so top notch. Resisting temptation for the Death Star and SSD becomes more difficult every time I see them.

The attention to detail with the higher value Star Wars sets are very impressive. There's a Millennium Falcon on Amazon with over 5000 thousand pieces selling for over £2000 quid that I would love to build, dismantle and build again.

I'm not a SW fan, I like the aesthetics of their models.

So want.

Here are some WIP shots of a Roman Temple I am working on. Made from mostly two Atlantis sets, and a lot of the loose pieces from my local LEGO store.

So I visited Build City on that branch.

They don't have the 70's van sadly :( (they might have it on other branches though), but I did see the space shuttle launch. It's... wow, 225 bucks in comparison!

strange. I thought both were about the same MSRP?

Prices here tend to go up due to shipping and stuff.

With that said our games are surprisingly cheaper.

What's even more impressive is that it's all ordinary, standard pieces. The only thing remotely custom is a long stretch of bendable tubing that goes over the engine thrusters.

The only downside is that because of all the Technic scaffolding holding it together, there's no interior detail whatsoever.

That's one nice thing about the Super Star Destoyer. It's mostly scaffolding, but you do get to build the bridge area.

Lego and Star Wars go together so well because the lego finish is very much in the same industrial vibe as the 'used future' that Star Wars design depends on for it's unique look. You could see a stud-riddled ship in the Star Wars universe and you would accept it as genuine.

It's really a match made in heaven.

Can't decide if I want to aim for high-end Star Wars or the modular city sets and the SW love-in is not making it any easier >.<

Push comes to shove we will probably collect a modular street because I see more "play value" for my kid there, but gawd almighty I want those giant Star Wars models.

If you're really thinking about getting either Star Wars or Modular stuff, the better question is which theme (assuming you can only choose one) do you want to invest in. You can do modular stuff for your kid for much cheaper than you can do collectible/display worthy Star Wars sets for you.

Realistically, you could grab a few smaller Town sets for the young one and you to play with/build/enjoy, while grabbing some of the nicer Star Wars stuff for you (and the kid when he/she gets older?).

Local (philippines).

How much is it normally anyway?

Well, in the US:

10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van: $119.99
10231 Shuttle Expedition: $99.99

I'm assuming this is the Shuttle you were talking about. If it's a different one (there's an older, more rare set), the higher price is more in line with what to expect. These are the LEGO.com store prices, for reference.

Yeah it's the shuttle expedition one.

Whoa, if it's value is roughly 227 here, then I must say they're overpricing it!

I hate customs meddling with online items =/

Oooh, yeah, that's shitty. Is there any way around that? Like, if someone from the states sent you a package, would customs go through and charge you based on the value of the contents? Or is it only for online shopping orders?

To be honest I think she is pretty satisfied with what we have. We're putting together the medieval village along with the mill village raid from the recently-retired Castle line, and so far they look and play great together (I'm gonna put up pics when we're finished). I may try to snag another set or two from that line before they get too expensive...the castle would be nice to have as I don't think Hogwart's would fit in real well, and I quite like the new jousting set. I don't know! So much want, hnnnnng

Actually, that makes a lot of sense...get together a nice castle collection before thinking about anything else.

Between those two sets we basically got the animal equivalent of a farm set, which is pretty cool for her...horses, chickens, cows, goats, pigs...even a frog!

I actually haven't ordered online (most are just steam purchases), but from what I heard customs tend to get in the way of everything.

Oh well, I guess the expense is for the sake of no customs meddling.

I finished my first round of sorting - basic categories! Next comes refining said categories and documenting them so I can ingrain this process and sort into my mind. I also need to stop at Wal-Mart and pick up a bunch more containers for refining the sort and some of those bead/craft containers for the smaller parts. Woo!

I also have started to receive some of the Bricklink orders I placed in order to get all the parts needed to make this guy:

3724-1.jpg

The main order is coming from Norway, though. I'm not sure how long that's going to take to get here, but it has 120 of the 142 green 2 x 2 Corner bricks I need. From Peeron, the only sets to contain this piece are:

142 in 3724-1 - LEGO Dragon (2001)
4 in 4998-1 - Stegosaurus (2008)
4 in 3825-1 - The Krusty Krab (2006)
4 in 3841-1 - Minotaurus (2009)
4 in 7163-1 - Republic Gunship (2002)
3 in 4999-1 - Vestas Windmill (2008)
2 in 7898-1 - Cargo Train Deluxe (2006)
2 in 4411-1 - Blue Strata XXL (2004)
2 in 7171-1 - Mos Espa Podrace (1999)
2 in 4400-1 - Creations and Bricks {Red Tub} (2003)
2 in 4101-1 - Wild Collection (2003)
2 in 5766-1 - Log Cabin (2011)
1 in 4518-1 - Creator Set (2004) - Unlisted Extra

So this has been a BITCH to procure (and quite expensive).

This build ALSO contains 48 2 x 8 Green Bricks. Let's take a look at the Peeron cutbook on that, too:

48 in 3724-1 - LEGO Dragon (2001)
25 in 3466-1 - 2x8 Dark Green Bricks (2000)
2 in 4423-1 - LEGO Creator Handy Box (2005)
1 in 4400-1 - Creations and Bricks {Red Tub} (2003)
1 in 4408-1 - Animals (2004)
1 in 4166-1 - Mickey's Car Garage (2000)

That random 3466 set you see? Yeah, not so much. So I went through the build instructions online and studied it to see if I'd have any problems replacing the 2x8 bricks with 2~2x4 bricks instead. Turns out, it's not an issue. A++

As soon as I get everything in and built, this guy will be joining me on my desk at my office for a while. Everyone seems to love my random LEGO buildings I keep on my desk/bookshelf. :)

lego pick a brick didn't offer the green bricks?

My local LEGO store didn't have either of the two I needed in bulk, and I'm pretty sure there's not much you can do at that point...Maybe there is, though? And the online version either didn't have any or limited me to like, 5 per order (it was one of the two, and it was stupid).

I have gotten to know a few of the guys that work at my local store, and they are nice enough to go in back and get some loose pieces that they haven't put into the store bins yet. You are still limited, but it doesn't hurt to ask if they have that one piece you need.

I always wondered if this sort of thing was possible...I may have to see what I can do.

For fans of the modular buildings, leaked shots of the 2012 set (Town Hall) have surfaced:

With 2766 pcs, it will be the largest modular building yet (looks taller than Grand Emporium). Can't wait to see some interior shots.

shit, I'm going to regret this question.

Are there any of the modular sets close to being withdrawn? i.e are there any I should be jumping on soon? I think my kids would like the modular sets too

(still want the VW camper more I think though. And the imperial shuttle. And tower bridge. God..)

So the fisherman's beard (minifigure collection) crops up in a regular build now. I hope they give Santa that beard as it would suit him so much better. I don't care if the wizard beard and pirate hat are a tradition now, they need improving!

Yeah. Firestation. I'd pick up 10 sets if I were you :p

Not that impressed with those pictures to be honest. Looks out of place with its size and the shape is extremely similar to the Fire Brigade. That said I'll probably buy it anyway.

Like Zaptruder said, Fire Brigade is next to go. Someone on Eurobricks pointed out that they don't even show the Fire Brigade in the "modular setup" picture of the Town Hall...

Grand Emporium and Tower Bridge would probably be next. Both of those were 2010 sets, so they are more than likely going to OOP within the next 18 months (whereas I think Fire Brigade and Medieval Market Village [MMV] are going to be gone in the next 6 or so).

Regarding the Town Hall...My next purchase is going to be the Grand Emporium, followed by either Mini Modulars or MMV, and then (based on time frame) Pet Shop -> Town Hall. I think the Mini's will be a better fit because of the theme of them - I don't typically care much about castle or historical sets (I'd be buying MMV for collectors value more than anything).

Also, that Town Hall looks SOO similar to the Fire Brigade. The building looks great and sits nicely as it towers over the other modulars, but side by side, the two look far too similar for me to be drooling over it like everyone on the internet right now. I respect the general love for these modular buildings - I really do. They are great models that teach a lot of cool building techniques and add a lot of "wow" to a display/layout. But I can't get over the fact that it looks and feels so much like FB.

Regardless, it will be a day 1 purchase for me. TLG has my money, so they can really do whatever the hell they want, haha.

Holy crap. I saw one of these modular sets in the January Pick Up thread and I was shocked at how great these new sets look. For years I have parroted the, "LEGO was so much better back in the day" but I these new series I keep seeing look fantastic. This thread makes me realize how much I miss LEGO. It's been over 10 years since I last built a set.
