The Carolina Panthers already have $128.2 million committed toward the 2012 salary cap.

According to contract figures obtained by ESPN.com, that’s the third-highest figure in the league and the Panthers will have to do some contract restructures or release some players before the league year starts in March.

The Panthers easily lead the NFC South in 2012 salary-cap commitment. The New Orleans Saints are second at $106.1 million, but the Saints face a challenging offseason. They want to re-sign several of their own potential free agents, especially quarterback Drew Brees and receiver Marques Colston.

The Atlanta Falcons are at $96.1 million and that figure includes the contract extension signed by tight end Tony Gonzalez just before the regular season ended. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are at $93 million. Although fans think the Bucs are the most frugal team in the league, that’s not true in this context.

There are five teams that currently have lower 2012 cap figures than the Bucs. But I should also point out the Bucs almost certainly will knock $7.2 million off their cap figure by cutting veteran defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

He was brought in essentially as a rental player in 2011, after Gerald McCoy suffered a season-ending injury. Haynesworth served his purpose and didn’t cost the Bucs much last season. But his contract escalates in 2012 and it’s highly unlikely the Bucs would want to keep him at his current salary.

In addition to coaching staff evaluations, the Atlanta Falcons have quite a few personnel calls to make. For one, defensive end John Abraham, the franchise's all-time sacks leader who put up more sacks than any other two 2011 Falcons combined, could be leaving us.

Last year, Snelling signed a one-year deal after testing the waters and Grimes was signed to a lean one-year tender as a restricted free agent. Weems also signed a one-year contract as a RFA, and Peterson was also signed just for 2011.

That so many critical players are due at once is actually a testament to Thomas Dimitroff's first draft class. Most of the names that likely leaped out at you while reading that list came from the 2008 draft. Now, without very many draft picks to work with, the test will be to see which of those players have earned second contracts.

DeCoud, McClure, and Snelling are probably gone. Abe may be a toss-up at this point depending on who's available in FA/draft. Some people are talking about Grimes being gone if we move away from a zone scheme next year, but I'm not so sure.

While watching that video, pretend 70% of Winslow's catches were called back for Offensive PI, and Mike Williams can't get any seperation vs single coverage and you have the 2011 season.

As far as I'm concerned 2011 never happened.
The lockout is still on, there was no football.
 
So I watched that little ESPN bit about THE CATCH.

It's so weird and cool to me to realize fans were allowed to run on the field back in the day in the NFL (unless only SF lets their fans do it).

I wonder who the Lions are going to franchise tag. Right now it seems like we have so many people to attempt to resign it almost seems ridiculous to think about FA in some regards. Calvin, Cliff Avril, Stephen Tulloch...jeez. And in a few semesters we'll have to pay Fatford

Megatron clearly demonstrated he's the best WR in the world. Based on Fitzgerald's deal Megatron's agent could go for $140m, 70m guaranteed. : /

Will miss McClure out of those 3. DeCoud can kick rocks, and Snelling is just a victim of circumstance. I'm not sure Hawley is ready to take over for McClure based on his performance when McClure was out earlier in the season. We have to find some way to keep Grimes. I think he'll work in a zone or man scheme. He's short, but his freakish leaping ability makes up for it.

I really wonder what Blank, Dimtrioff and Smith are going to say at the press conference tomorrow. We have so many holes to fill and are missing 2 key picks to fill them. I have absolutely no hope going into the offseason right now. :-/

I think we need to try to shop Turner. Maybe we can get something of value for him.

CJ still has a year left on the contract, right? If I remember it's at an insanely high price, so Detroit probably will want to sign an extension.

Yes, Calvin would go free-agent after the 2012 campaign, though if Detroit is serious about keeping him around they'd probably want to try and renew his deal before he gets a chance to salivate over other teams' money too much. It will be a very tough thing for us to deal with free agency in coming years, with both our starting pass-rushers up, Tulloch, Calvin next year, and Stafford and Suh not that far behind. This is the downside of having all those top 3 picks and they're actually panning out for once, it's going to make paying the rest of the team a nightmare.

I didn't realize that there was a bunch of stuff behind the scenes regarding Hue Jackson, but the news of his firing surprised me today. It seems like they've gone through so many coaches lately that they'll be primed for an even bigger fall next year.
