Yuasa is a faux-monocle director. I want to think of a live action director to compare him to but I can't think of any so over-indulgent and masturbatory. The downside to the power of animation I suppose. Too much control!

Shitty manga. Every word is the opposite of good. Every scene is the opposite of acceptable. Every relationship is the opposite of believable.
But that goes for most anything anime-related. It drags on a lot, but it's got enough suspense to keep me reading.
Edit: And to be honest, I don't think the relationships are all that hard to believe. Maybe tell us why you think so?

Are you reading it in the right direction? Maybe if you look at it in the opposite direction it will all make sense
Manga is published in the wrong direction so you have to fix it yourself

If you go just by the interviews, you would be led to believe that guys don't want to give up their free time and girls are too genki.

Does no one else in the academy think its strange that characters are hit with balls to make them fly backwards like 15 feet?! Mindblown. One of the things I love with the anime is that it continually does those various shots of everyone expressions at crucial moments, I guess of the six academies involved, time consuming but still great to get many characters screentime. Echizen's attitude is at times unlikeable, but fortunately Kentaro (utterly hilarious) keeps things great.
