What's GAF's opinion on Xam'd? I remember the first half being really great with all the great slice of life content, and the quality went down in the second half after it went all serious with the story.

Also (spoilers)

Nakiami should've been the true waifu :(

It's best not to think about the second half of X'amd. I mean, the first half was hardly perfect either, but it was pretty good. Such a wasted opportunity.

Xam'd = a show full of great, well crafted individual episodes, but when put together they make no fucking sense. Literally. I dare anyone to make sense of the shows story/history/world, etc based on the show alone.

Probably the worst case of parts that don't equal the whole I've ever seen. Still worth seeing as its for the most part lovingly put together and full of great moments that you just don't get in your average show anymore.

Gunbuster 5

Even better than the last episode! Gunbuster is a REALLY cool mech, love the way all of its laser attacks are animated. The women are so goddamn emotional on this show lol but that seems like kind of a thing in anime. I definitely noticed it a lot when I watched through Robotech(Rick Hunter Macross stuff).

The animation was good.

So it's like The Idolm@ster?

The subjectivity of this list is it's downfall. Also I do feel that pizzaroll should be higher.

See, I don't understand why Jex tops it though. Dude has the taste, but doesn't have the attitude Brand does for example towards others.

The last episode will blow your tits.

His shounen no haato makes him rise through the ranks.

He asked for substance and I gave him something with a lot of substance.

From my own experience that substance seems to be a sedative of some sort? I dunno, I always fall asleep before I get a good look at it.

See, I don't understand why Jex tops it though. Dude has the taste, but doesn't have the attitude Brand does for example towards others.

That's because Jex is very good hiding behind that mask of civility!

You should post more often. And watch Revolutionary Girl Utena so we can be BFFs.

I would post more often if I had more to say. I don't watch too much anime -- probably an episode a week on average. College work takes up too much of my time.

I've definitely seen Utena, though! Most of the anime I watch is from GAF recommendations, so I couldn't ignore Utena. Loved it, too. One of my favorite animes for sure. I convinced my sister to watch it, too.

You're watching this for the first time? At leas you survived to the 'kick-ass' part of show where the titular mech actually appears, rather than giving up on the series during the parody/reworking of a 70's tennis anime.

That's basically it. A few people are outright Tsun Tsun with other people. You must be mentally challenge if you like that show mentality. He is pretty civil and normally supports his claims pass two sentences.

It's self-evident that original anime are superior, there's no need to pollute the medium with more sub-par adaptations.

Not sure if serious
I think your joking

I can't really think of any good original anime to come out in 2011.

and no mpd is not good

See, I don't understand why Jex tops it though. Dude has the taste, but doesn't have the attitude Brand does for example towards others.

It's more of a subtle elitism that makes it even more effective. The kind of posts that make you think "man, that is one smug jerk" without actually going as far as to think of him as an asshole. Something like this is a good example:

It's self-evident that original anime are superior, there's no need to pollute the medium with more sub-par adaptations.

Note how he is grouping 2 incredibly broad categories into "better" and "worse" while simultaneously establishing his view as fact. Only a top monocle with a closed view of the medium can pull this off.

man cosmic has this shit down to a science. The monocle rankings are deeper than I thought.

So was there a consensus about how good Another was? Or bad? I missed it when people were watching it in the thread.

Its true for the most part
when you're watching something based on manga there is almost always pacing/filler/padding issues and things that are lost in translation. Games seem to work better for adaptations. Light novels are somewhere in between.

Note how he is grouping 2 incredibly broad categories into "better" and "worse" while simultaneously establishing his view as fact. Only a top monocle with a closed view of the medium can pull this off.

Then it just goes over my head. Well written, but doesn't insinuate any insult direct towards the poster. Though it establishes a very firm belief(Factual if you want to say), on which is correct and which is wrong.

You know what, I'm just gonna make a key to describe the classes since a few people seem to be confused.

Class S: Super Monocle People: The quintessential elitist. Often use phrases like "lowest common denominator", "you have bad taste", "this hurts my eyes", "anime is dead", etc. Will nitpick the most insignificant details and expect everyone else to be bothered by it too and if they aren't, those people's opinions are no longer trustworthy. Prone to looking down on others for this reason and believing they are almost always the one in the right.

Ex: "What, you like (X Anime)!? You have terrible taste and are probably a less than stellar human being all around! You must have dropped out of grade school if you think this has good writing or is of acceptable quality in any way!"

Class A: Fake Monocle People: A toned down class S. While still noticeably elitist, they are a bit more forgiving of others who don't agree with them. They are still unlikely to trust that person though.

Ex: "You like (X Anime)? Damn son, you should probably get an eye check and/or an education. Here's 5 bucks for a library card, so go read or something."

Class B: Refined Retina Displacement Theory: On the border between Monocle and Mustache. Still have their own brand of elitism, but it is more subdued and may not be immediately noticeable. As it is a broad category, the levels of elitism will vary greatly.

Ex: "You like (X Anime)? I guess that's fair, but damn... Remind me not to take recommendations from you 0_o"

Class C: All around mustache club: Mostly friendly and non-confrontational. Won't go out of their way to insult the tastes of others and will usually accept the different people like different things. There may be some latent elitism that will show on occasion, but for the most part they will be just as happy ignoring a tastes scuffle.

Ex: "You like (X Anime)? Well I don't think it's good, but we can still be friends. Let's have a snowball fight!"

Class D: Boys in Dresses Boys in dresses.
I'd say that class B is the right class for me, got it about right.

Also, it's great that this time you did a nice, understandable key like this. I remember after the first list I had a really hard time getting a clear answer on what the listing actually meant, and while I eventually figured it out, mostly, it's great that this time you made it much clearer with this list.

Wait i think I saw some in Kanon. Snow.
They called it snow, but i'm suspicious.

I love winter, so this one has been so, so horrible... :(

We're supposed to get six inches today, but we'll see.

On that note, that I love winter probably is another of the reasons why Kanon is my favorite Key show. :)

I assumed the usage of 'pollute' and especially 'self-evident' (because what the heck does that mean?) might tip people off that I was being sarcastic. I've previously referenced Wikipedia's list of Anime With Original Screenplays and chided many of them for being rubbish.

I just realized that cosmic has been misunderstanding all of jexhius' sarcastic posts.

Doesn't change the fact you're a big meanie poopoo head.

I mean 'original anime' includes such gems as: Angel Cop, Glass Fleet, Fractale, Birth, Ronin Warriors and Speed Grapher.

It's self-evident that original anime are superior, there's no need to pollute the medium with more sub-par adaptations.

Yeah, I mean in 2011 we were greeted with manga adaptations like Usagi Drop, Chihayafuru, Wandering Son, Fate/Zero and other such shows. Clearly all polluting the medium and keeping us from experiencing the wonders of Ano Hana and Fractale.

The first episode is easily the best, and it goes downhill a bit from there, but it is still pretty entertaining and funny - since it was made in the before-time when Oshii still knew what a joke was.

I like Gosenzosama (it has basset hounds in the intertitles!) but Beautiful Dreamer is amaaaaazing and takes priority.

To be fair, Beautiful Dreamer takes priority over a lot of anime!

one in a hundred manga adaptations are good
im pretty sure the ratio of good straight to anime shows is higher than that

And nonoriri doesn't post enough to be considered here.

Nonoriri is not a true Nonoriri. :'(

I stopped watching anime, that's how cool I am.

Well not really..see..today (yesterday?) I watched an anime!

Redline theatrical dub edition (with friends)

It's basically like Redline but with a semi-decent english dub and in a theater. A++ would watch again.

Eh, I'd say that the ratio is pretty similar between original anime, and adaptations. Both can be good or bad, and it depends a lot on the quality of the staff working on an individual show.

Both good adapted anime and good original anime exist. Since the overall number of adaptations is far greater than the number of completely original works, it only makes sense that the number of stuff worth watching would follow suit.

You know, I don't think Tutu is particularly cute. Sure, Ahiru is adorable, but it's not the aspect that I'm most reminded of when I think of the show. It's just a really well-written and funny anime that's paying homage to a bunch of different stuff without bordering on parody.

I agree. The show doesn't really focus on presenting 'cute scenes' or interactions between characters.

I don't know you anymore.

Even so I think the character dynamics are pretty good! I love how they've turned every relationship upside down from the first half to the next. Hell, even Pike became a more fleshed-out character than I was used to.

http://www.wowow.co.jp/anime/ozuma/

There's more information now. It's going to be on WOWOW, and it's a 6 episode series. This marks the first WOWOW produced anime project in many, many years. The staff seem pretty cool too.

Concept/Supervision/Design: Leiji Matsumoto
Supervising Director: Ryosuke Takahashi
Director: Takahiro Ikezoe
Script: Junki Takegami
Design Collaboration: Nobuteru Yuki
Mecha Design: Hideyuki Matsumoto
Planning: WOWOW
Planning/Production: Planet Entertainment
Production: Equity Pictures Japan
Animation Production: LandQ Studio

That's actually pretty neat, that small picture gives me some hope as well. Clearly it's going to be extremely short but at least it may be well made.

Slice of life comedy? Certainly not the anime. Maybe a bit in the manga, more so than the anime anyway, but still, I'm not sure if I'd use that word, no.

Anyway, does the game have action like the anime? I mean, at least a third or more of the episodes are focused on combat. I presume at least some of that shows in the game too...

Also, given that the game's an H-game, I'd think that there'd be a romance aspect at some point... there are hentai scenes with the main five girls and like four or five others too, right?

Yep. The game does have a lot of action not by way of animation, but by way of prose. And although the whole thing revolves around them being martial artists, the action is spread very thin throughout, until
the big showdowns at the end of each route, it seems

Also, yep, dirty scenes with the 5 main girls, a bro (I've heard), and like 3 or 4 others. They're not at all a focus though, as they
come in at the end of each route, and sometimes not even at the end, but in the extra 'after story.'
Easily skipped.

well, think about all the satoshi kon and miyazaki movies that were straight to movie
it seems more like a budget thing really, and the studios that had bigger budget like IG and Bones have done more original shows

Mythical and burning to death?
Speaking of which:

Gintama 82

You know, maybe I should get around to checking out one of the Phoenix adaptations. Or like, the original work. Maybe.

Anyway, after an actual story arc it's not surprising to see such a cheaply made double episode.
