Hoping this is one of those hollywood things where it just keeps getting pushed further and further back with delays in production until no one can make it anymore.

Disagree. It will work as a slow building hype, and when Avatar comes back, the average person will remember it and say "Oh shit, this film's back to change cinema". I think it will have a positive effect on the box office.
As a Cameron fan I'm disappointed though. Really too bad. He was looking old in that recent Sydney pic. Makes me a little worried how more Cameron we can get. Terminator is probably my favorite film franchise ever, and even if I didn't like Avatar I thought it was the mark of a glorious return. I figure Avatar 2 would probably be even better than the original. Cameron makes amazing sequels when he really knows his territory.
Eh, I'm fine with this. I can do without Avatar in my life until then. Every extra minute of pre-production will result in additional design work. More creatures, plants, environmental details, etc.
Plus, Cameron recently mentioned that he wants to do underwater performance capture. It takes time to develop new technology.
I'm just glad Prometheus is finally coming out next year. Alien came out in 1979 and Scott is just now returning to that universe.

-Ridley Scott's I AM LEGEND, with Schwarzenegger.
-George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road with Mel Gibson.
-James Cameron's BATTLE ANGEL.

the one point of comfort (assuming he doesn't get eaten by a colossal squid in the Mariana Trench) is that whatever tech Cameron designs post AVATAR Trilogy for Battle Angel should be beyond phenomenal.
I haven't read much of Cameron talking Battle Angel, but I'm guessing (like the Na'vi) that he wants to make damn sure Alita/Gally can be made on a completely believable level. Can't wait. I just really, really hope it actually happens...

He recently said he's taking Worthington diving to prepare for A2 and that Sam is shitting his pants. I can't wait for the scene where Jake has to slap Neytiri back into consciousness after she drowns.
Yeah, I'm not talking about box office here. I'm talking about my own anticipation of the sequels. 2014 was fucking brutal but manageable. But another 2 years into 2016? Jesus fucking christ. December 2016 is just a hair under 5 YEARS away.
I'm just gonna pretend these don't even exist until about 2015 now.
