It means it ranked lower than whatever position the sales charts bottom out at. Best I can gather is that it sold somewhere south of 920 copies, but no-one knows how far south of that.

Persona 4 is selling well, hopefully Atlus is getting a good chunk of the profits.

Damn Otaku, not supporting quality.

Like all those people who beg for quality Japanese games and then ignore the ones that come out (Xenoblade, Trails in the Sky, Yakuza and many more).

Jeeeez. I really wanted to like this show, the premise and ideas were great, but these clusterfuck episodes have just made me dislike it. Ehhh, 10 more episodes of Shu becoming a man is probably what is going to happen. Silly. Wasted potential.
 
Another sales thing: Insufficient Blu-ray Sales of Hidan no Aria To Produce Second Season

Novel author Akamatsu Chugaku posted in his twitter that the realization of the second season of Hidan no Aria depended on the Blu-ray and DVD sales. He said the producers have been checking the sales closely but the current sales were far below the required amount.

Director Miyamoto Yukihiro posted in his twitter that they have reached close to the second season of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko.

Hidan no Aria: 6,356 copies (one episode, 4,200 yen)

Nice. Bad Aria doesn't deserve more of anything. I'm willing to give Denpa another go around, but the first season wasn't very good.

Would you have bought Chihayafuru if it was released here on Bluray?

Anyway, I don't think anyone animates a show like Chihayafuru and expects it to sell well. If it drives manga sales (which are pretty good anyway) then that's fine, it's accomplished something.
 
The sales of Chihayafuru are sad, but not unexpected. Hardly a show that'll appeal to the Japanese otaku who buy anime BDs. I wish the situation was different, but there it is.

Mr. Akai: When [Disney’s] Atlantis got released, NHK actually asked them what exactly they thought about Nadia. They were kind of puzzled because they are kind of a subsidiary and it was not like they had any kind of decision making power. So they were mystified as to why NHK bothers asking them.

On the internet, there was a lot of talk about how Atlantis was so similar to Nadia. Of course, Disney says that they have never seen or heard of a series called Nadia. NHK came to Gainax because of this and asked them how they felt about this implication that Disney was plagiarizing the series. They didn’t really have anything to say because they weren’t the parent corporation. It was not like they had any rights anyways.

Mr. Yamaga: We actually tried to get NHK to pick a fight with Disney, [Laughter] but even the National Television Network of Japan didn’t dare to mess with Disney and their lawyers. What we said to them was, this really had nothing to do with us but if it did we would definitely take them to court. Of course, it is all a lie. We actually did say that but we wouldn’t actually take them to court. We would be so terrified about what they would do to them in return that we wouldn’t dare.”

Yeah, it's the one shoujo "hit" as it were. But I mean, they also made a real movie as well, so that's how big it is.
But look at it this way - KnT wasn't even released on BD when it first came out. That seems to be indicative of how relevant the home market is to the people who might buy this stuff.

Arata fans need not be disappointed at the absence of Arata in the anime, there's a lot of more subtle foreshadowing in the Manga that
Chihaya looks at Arata in a more romantic way, especially with the mangaka using flowery backgrounds and etc whenever there's a scene between the two. As you all already know, Taichi is stuck in the friendzone.

I think both Arata and Taichi have a 50% of getting Chihaya maybe Arata slightly more, seeing as how
Taichi is set up to be the underdog and Arata is set up to be the "true love" character who gave Chihaya her path in life and promised her to meet at the final summit of karuta action

You'd probably be right. Considering what I've read on Japan and women's/men's roles that is, although I'd really like to learn more. As I mentioned earlier there was quite an interesting discussion at a The Girl Who Leapt Through Time screening I went too, but I am sadly ignorant on the subject.

Rinne no Lagrange Ep.01

With the exception of the few moments of fanservice (Which the next episode seems to have more of), I really enjoyed the show. The colors are vibrant and the protagonist seems interesting.
The fact that she doesn't get all emotional upon being given the challenge set forth is refreshing; the show even has a reasoning behind Madoka knowing how to fight and defend herself.

It's actually kind of endearing, in an odd way, it's authentic.

You should never, ever watch the next episode previews of anything. I don't trust the people who make those things not to spoil the most interesting parts of the story.

One of the rare exceptions is Penguin Drum, because they deliberately construct an image that relates to the content of the next episode without giving too much away. It's hard to imagine most creators care enough about the 'next episode previews' to put that much effort into them.

This is probably the best summation of the characters in the show that I've read and I largely agree with it. The show works pretty hard to present both Taichi and Arata in a good light, rather than highlighting one as the obvious 'winner'.

I don't quite agree with your characterisation of Taichi though -
I'm pretty darn certain that he's well aware of his feelings towards Chihaya but he doesn't intervene because he's concerned about how Chihaya feels about Arata. It does seem to bother him how Chihaya is hung up on Arata despite the fact that they've been separated for a long time. Of course, I could be reading it wrong.
 
Another - 01

I guess this show has potential but my god it moves at a snail's place. I don't know if it's the delivery of the lines but everything is so emotionless. I think that fits the theme of the show so I guess I have to get used to it. So far, very very creepy and that has piqued my interest.

Great music too. So haunting.

Ben-To's next episode previews are pretty good, in the sense that they do not preview anything about the next episode.

Actually I could do without those skits in Ben-To.

As a mobile phone user I've come to respect that people have limited screen size when browsing GAF, so it always bothers me when people quote posts without breaking the image urls. Quotes between quotes do not get copied automatically, thankfully!

This cracks me up everytime, animegaf must have some amazing fanservice filter when it doesn't involve loli's or something. :lol

This is how you can tell it's the final project from 'old Madhouse' - lots of work has been put into it, the direction is strong, the subject matter is familiar but it's not clichéd and it's not going to make anyone any money.

It's no surprise that they died. I certainly wouldn't fund a project like that. Of course, its the kind of work I want produced but that's no reason to make more it.

This is why, in general, I try not to pay attention to these sales figures. They're a mix of the depressing and the unsurprising. I don't know enough about the Japanese market or consumer to say that Chihayafuru would have done so much better if it was just marketed here, or shown on this channel at this time. So I won't. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can.

Ah, that's cool. I just generally re-size everything to a fairly small size anyway because large images are annoying and often pointless.

I think the word best used to describe this is grotesque; which is a negative in many respects, but what I think is the intended purpose of the film. Seeing that it was the adaption of Suehiro Maruo's manga of the same name and knowing some of his body of work, this fits in perfectly.

So yeah...not watching that again.

Looking at sales of DVD/BR in Japan, how in the fuck is this industry still alive? It must exist as one of the smallest profit market industries in existence. I'm actually amazed that anime still exists to be honest. Maybe that's one reason why I still buy so much stuff. I just don't want it to die.

It's hard to blame them for making otaku pandering shows with such narrow profit margins, it also doesn't help that the employees don't get paid all that much and are salaried so no overtime pay.

Oh yeah caj, I checked out Angel Tales 1. It was pleasant not seeing bouncing T&A every 10 seconds, and the story is pretty entertaining.

I don't know if I represent all of AnimeGAF, but I've mentioned in the past (Hanasaku Iroha) how some instances of fanservice take me out of the show.
