The LEGO Thread

That is awesome! I just checked the length of the thing... it's 124,5 cm...weighing 3,5 kilo :O That thing is HUGE

This thread needs more custom Lego creations! More creativity! Less kits put together per the instructions!!!

Here is one of my pride and joys. It is the Argo from Star Blazers (or Space Battleship Yamato for you hardcore anime fans). I put this together 20 years ago. Yep, that's right, this Lego model has been together for 20 years. It's moved from my mom's house to my ex-wife's apartment to my brother's house to my current house, and through it all it has never been taken apart. Star Blazers was and still is my favorite cartoon of all time. This is actually the fourth iteration of this model, I built three others in high school before I put this one together. My brother at one point had a Lego Andromeda from Star Blazers to go alongside it, as well as Desslock's command ship, but those have been "recycled" for a long time now. But my Argo still remains, and will most likely never be taken apart:
Dude, that's awesome!

Honestly, not that impressed...Really sad that TLG opted to do SOH on a small scale like this.
The Sydney Opera House is such an elegant structure, but this. . . is not. It looks clunky, like fallen dominoes. Not liking it.

Just got this on clearance at Meijer for $25! I'm so excited, I haven't gotten a Lego set since I was a kid and not many that were this big either.

Guys.
Stop posting cool things guys.
It's so tempting.
I don't have the money to buy legos, guys. :(

So jealous of this stuff.

Also, as annoying as breaking h-scroll can be, it made looking at that sphinx boxart so much more epic- i had no idea what it was, so i was like "why's he talking as if the set's huge, it's one of the dinky car ones..." and then scrolling slowly revealed the badass sphinx.

Have to agree with this. The Lego pieces are so apparent here. They don't naturally define the structure, like, say the round studs of the Burj Khalifa, or the flat tiles of the Robie House.

And congrats to the dude who got the SSD! Post pics when it's finished!

Going to be down at Brickfest at Birmingham, AL. Saturday. Will be sure to take a lot of photos of people's cool creations. Wonder if any Gaffers here will be a a part of the event.

I love it. I love mini scale models as much as the big ones. In fact I think I almost like mini modulars more than the regular ones. There's certain creativity and ingenuity associated with mini models that really clicks with me.

Microscale models are amazing:

These are my favorites to look at on MOCpages. They remind of Katamari, haha. Something about SOH just doesn't work with me.

Microscale can be great, but I'd have agree that the Opera House looks way to clunky.

and yet both of my kids took one look and went 'Sydney Opera House, that looks so cool!'

Maybe they're better at filling in the gaps, and sometimes we're after just a little too much accuracy/neatness?

Although my son did dismiss the Burj Khalifa, saying it was just a tower of those little cylinder bricks.

Those architecture sets just seem like a rip off, all of the sets I've seen at stores are just a couple of flat pieces you could get with any real set with a better variety of pieces. /bitterpeoplerant (That Burj Khalifa thing is the definition of a rip off)

Thanks to leng jai I was able to find the set# of the set I've been trying to find for ages(6999) and it seems pretty expensive on ebay, is there any other places I should look? Will the lego store have sets this old?

I don't think they're necessarily meant as serious lego sets, they're more decoration. I have a few nanoblocks sets of famous landmarks and they're just fun to build and display.

TBH I doubt I'd buy any unless they have lots of special bricks. Some of them have quite a lot of smooth brown bricks which is a bit tempting..

If I liked the look of one I'd probably just look up a set inventory and see if I have the parts to build it myself.

The Architecture line has it's ups and downs. I like a few of the sets, and I keep those I do like on display at my office. Others, not so much. It's a really cool theme with a good mindset, but it just isn't delivering consistently enough.

@ChaChaChaChia I grabbed that same set the other day - it had a lot of neat little parts that I figured "For $25, what the hell?" Clearance sets are one of the best ways to build up a nice part log.

@Ookami-kun The whole line has a lot of playability built into it. The giant Pyramid set is one of the more interactive sets I've ever built - lots of little nuances built in. If you can get them at a discount, they're great. At full price, though, it goes into the realm of preference - for the price some of the sets run at MSRP, I'd rather buy some other sets/save for bigger sets.

I think I'm going to head up the LEGO store today and grab the Mini Modulars. I still haven't assembled the Fire Brigade I bought recently, but I have some free time today to venture out. :P

I just discovered the whole lego digital designer thing with the design by me products. Only to realize the last orders they are taking are Jan. 16. :(.. Any one know if they have any plans to still support the software once the program is over. Or is this going to be left up to the Lego community?

Design By Me is miserably over priced. But there is a LDD Universe mode you can use to access every brick available, get instructions (and possibly piece count), and then buy the bricks yourself off of Bricklink or something. Also, LDD 5 is supposedly coming on the 17th or something like that. Heads up! :)

Does Toys R Us carry the bigger sets in store? I went looking for the flagship today and struck out. The store I went to had a pretty large LEGO section but it was barren; just a few Star Wars and City sets. Didn't see the modulars either. How's the assortment at Walmart?

TRU will usually have the largest selection outside a LEGO store. I have never seen modular architecture sets. Some of the larger ones will occasionally sell the mega Star Wars sets, but usually just the normal sets.

Best bet for the larger, non-licensed sets is a Lego store. I've never personally seen the modulars in retail shops like Wal-Mart or TRU, but that could be a regional thing.

Online they're pretty easy to come by. Amazon's good for large sets too, just watch out for sellers charging a premium. Compare their prices with Lego.com to see if they're priced fairly.

Have you guys seen pics of two of the Royal Joust sets combined? I like the normal one but I said goddamn when I saw this:

Standard set:

Gonna try to grab the OOP kingdoms castle next month, I think...after that I'm all over this. Really stoked to put together a big medieval display.

I was won over with it to begin with because the press image Lego used to unveil the set was the two of them combined, but seeing it as a solo build I was a little underwhelmed, at least compared to the past Medieval Marvet Village.

Presumably January next year the exclusive set will be a LOTR effort though?

I bought that Pharaoh's Quest set above when it was on clearance at my Borders closing. Sadly the Harry Potter sets they had went well before they were anywhere near a good discount. It was one of my first "big" sets as I only ever got the little ones as a kid.

This thread is dangerous. After reading it, I ordered the Fire Station and Grand Emporium modulars. Wallet am cry!

You forgot Pet Shop!

Actually, I also bought GE and FB this week and my wife will kill me if I don't wait a while to get Pet Shop and Town Hall. I also blame it on this thread.

Gotta do it in moderation, I'll probably get the Pet Shop and the new Town Hall when my money balance has recovered =)

Think I'm going to do the same. Was considering buying two of each for future sales, but might just try and open the box carefully enough to reuse it later. Does resale price get impacted a lot if the set is opened, or is overall condition more important?

I was hoping the mini modulars would satisfy me for a while, but actually looking at the teeny GE, makes me want the full size one more!

Just got back from the Lego Store. Pickups!

Lots of people going home with new Lego sets. Line went out the door!

Spent some time chatting with a Lego dude and he suggested anyone looking for the Imperial Flagship should just start calling Lego stores across the country. He said if they have one, they'll ship it to you. He also mentioned it had been marked down to $100(!), which helped move the left over stock. Great price for that set, so it's definitely worth the effort to make the calls.

wonder why the Grand Emporium is 30% more expensive than the Fire Station, even though the fire station has more bricks? Does the GE have larger bricks?

On the note of Microscales and figures. Been thinking of grabbing that Star Wards Advent set. The micro ship figs worth it?

Got the Imperial Flagship, though it cost me $50 more than if I had picked it up before it went OOP. Need to keep on top of that from now on. Here's a listing I found on Brickset:

10194 emerald night december 2011 (maersk train will replace this item)
10199 winter toy shop december 2011

10193 medieval market village december 2012
10197 fire brigade december 2012
10216 winter village bakery december 2012

10219 maersk train december 2013
10211 grand emporium december 2013
10214 tower bridge december 2013 (extended due to popularity)
10217 diagon alley december 2013
10218 pet shop december 2013

Personally, I wouldn't wait until November to pick up Fire Brigade.

Good to know, thanks ghostmind!

I can't decide if I want the Fire Brigade or not. It is easily my least favorite of the series, at least of those currently available.

This is probably a dumb question, but how does the tower bridge scale with the modulars?

hmm. Some of them are pretty good. I kept the instructions and could scan them in so you could take a look - you probably have the pieces already. But then you get santa Yoda

They were both $150 when I bought them last week.

And the GE was cheaper than the FB where i bought em, 130€ vs 140€

Hmm, so for some reason the Fire Brigade was discounted (or GE was inflated)

Thanks. No major hurry to pick up Fire Brigade then. Tower Bridge being extended - does that mean it'll be less of a collectors item (i.e should I consider resale value or not).

Surprised Pet Shop is due to go out at the same time as Grand Emporium.

Time to make some calls...

If I find one I am going to get them to send me a mini-mod as well. Closest LEGO store is 4 hours away :(

So I bought the Mini Modulars last night. There's this thing about bag building - literally build the model in the bag (think ship in a bottle). Well the Mini Modulars come in five separate bags for each of the five buildings. I decided to try and bag build one of them.

I think I just beat LEGO.

I have no intention of building the other four like this. My brain hurts.
