Hi Anime-Gaf. I'm thinking of getting some anime on blu-ray, and I'm currently eyeing Casshern Sins and Kuragehime. What do you guys think of these shows? I see that the director of Kuragehime also directed Baccano which I really enjoyed, and both shows sound pretty interesting from their descriptions.

Both are very interesting shows, but for very different reasons.

Casshern is a beautiful, slightly trippy shounen fight show. It's more about wallowing in the atmosphere than the actual narrative but it's certainly worth watching, and should look gorgeous on Blu-Ray.

Kuragehime is a very enjoyable shoujo/josei comedy. It's not much like Baccano in my opinion (different style of humour) but it's no less entertaining.

If you can access Hulu, the first episode of both is on there (look for Kuragehime under "Princess Jellyfish") so you can sample them that way and decide if you want to continue with them.

Get Casshern

I bought Casshern Sins on BD and ended up disappointed by it; it starts with an intriguing and promising plot with great atmosphere, but doesn't follow through on its ideas in a satisfactory manner. It does look amazing - the action animation, general visual design, and background art are fantastic - so it might be worth picking up for that alone.

As cold as I was on Kuragehime, I'm tempted to buy the show myself just to support it. I still think that the premise itself was wasted, but that's the problem with the source material.

I enjoy both these works, although neither of them are perfect. Casshern Sins is certainly a treat for the eyes, so getting it on BD seems like a logical choice. It meanders quite a bit but as long as you enjoy the atmosphere it's worth getting. You could always legally watch it on Youtube and see what you think of it:http://www.youtube.com/show?p=peSwVWfwoXY&tracker=show_av

Kuragehime is certainly no Baccano, although I liked it for what it was. As it's quite a short series it never really has time to go anywhere, plot-wise, and therefore it feels a bit unfinished.

Rose of Versailles 2

Revolutionary Girl Oscar-no-Kimi is full of stars~

Also, Marie Antoinette is MAD dumb. She's no Nanako :(

That papa show with long title I can't be bothered remembering *irony* - 02

Goddamnit I wasn't expecting it but I actually thought out the scenario happening before it happened, which just made me roll my eyes.

And it looks like I pegged the wrong girl for the tsundere roll, damn twintail'd girl throwing me off.

Cajun needs to stay away from Hina, her in conjunction with Sakura will just kill him.

Kinda assumed we would've got a second season for Kuragehime.

Surprised when there was no word on it a year later.

From what I remembered it
had a very open ending
.

Thanks guys. I didn't know about the Funimation youtube channel so I guess I'll be checking out a few episodes of Casshern.

It's kind of better and worse than the first season. I mean, it's all more Kaiji, but the pacing ranges from the exciting to the frustratingly slow. It's well worth watching.

I'm cool with that, as long as the slow parts are somewhere in the middle rather than the end. Above all, i'm just glad to have found that they made a second season for Kaiji!

Papa no Iukoto 2

Twinkle twinkle little star...
the parents are "missing" but presumed dead, I bet they are stuck on an island somewhere!

Ano Natsu de Matteru 2

It's a tenous balancing act between the "magical girlfriend" side and the "average kids hang out in summer" side, but so far so good. The latter part is already shaping up to be better executed than Ano Hana, thankfully. Whereas Ano Hana began with the friends apart and relied solely on one flashback scene (where they were already falling out) to establish how they interacted as a group, this show begins with them together and has given us several scenes to establish their individual and group personalities. Making a movie gives them an excuse to be together, but at the same time it's acknowledged that it's just something they're fooling around with to kill time and it's not a big deal if they don't actually complete it. Thus it feels more acceptable for them to be aimless with this goal than it was for Ano Hana to be aimless with respect to Menma's wish. There's hints of romantic tension amongst the friends, brought out by the introduction of Ichika into the circle, which paves the path towards the same sort of melodrama that killed Ano Hana, but I think this beginning will be better able to support that when it comes.

Ano Natsu de Matteru 2

Okay so I gave this another chance to change my mind but nope, it's still boring trite shit. The whole thing's just a retread of the same tropes it feels I've already seen a thousand times before and there's really nothing that makes it stand out from the rest at all. I doubt I'll be bothering with this anymore.

It might be your fault for expecting something like Toradora out of AnoNatsu though. Given the pedigree, feel and style, we can definitely tell what the series is going for, and it's decidedly different from a series like Toradora.

You're right. Toradora was fun whereas this is definitely not. That's a pretty stark difference right there.

CCS 21

4th graders in a marathon? Well this definitely isnt the Us.
Meilin is cute as usual. Otherwise not a particularly great episode, well by CCS standards. I mean it is still a CCS episode and that puts it above a lot of things.

This episode holds a special place in my heart, but I think that might just be because it was the first episode of the series that I watched. It's a pretty fun episode, even though it is nothing earth shattering.

Chihayafuru 15

Team Queen vs Team Taichi. The ultimate showdown.

The Akagi effect.
Truly one of the worst effects to afflict show.

Idolmaster house remixes every dream I have ever had just came true.
damn i'm gonna need some links

I'm pretty sure Funimation also has Kuragehime uploaded on youtube.

non-edit: here it is http://www.youtube.com/show/princessjellyfish

And
The Queen is the bridge.
Even though it was quite odd how forcefully that was written in the end. She gets in this antagonistic tizzy over
the 5 cards that Chihaya took, but goes on to lose more to Sudo and have no qualms with it.
I guess the connection made in the previous ep was to show an effect on the
Queen
as much as Chihaya--
same age, sex, fashion sense etc.. etc..
--but this ep didn't do a well enough job of calling back to that, imo. It did,
when they were at the table in the lobby, but the actual ep structure felt off so the effect felt weak.
I'd prefer it if
Chihaya never does become eli-te and Taichi sucks shit and stays in B forever.

I really feel as if this is going to happen to either
Taichi or Porky, at the least. They're both B and one is going to stay there for the sake of on-screen time, I think. And I'm also thinking that'll be Taichi that does, if the show's to use its built up wellfare with him, really cover its thematic base, and really drive the transformation home. I actually see Porky being used as the 'turn around' point; in everything from physique, to romance, to Karuta.

Chihayafuru 15

Sped through the key events a lot quicker than I was expecting.

Still a very enjoyable episode. Looking forward to seeing Arata back in the mix so we can have a Taichi vs Arata bro-down.

It sure is.

If you liked Utena and/or Oniisama e, you'll thoroughly enjoy this!

Sweet, will look in to both.

I could be wrong but it seemed to me that the show was implying that
The Queen was not actually trying against Sudo. Him getting more cards could simply be the product of them playing each other so many times, or her not wanting to embarrass him. The way Chihaya plays Karuta and the way she took those 5 cards is probably a factor in why she got so mad. At the very least perhaps The Queen isn't used to losing cards in the early rounds.
You're right though, I think they could have done a better job explaining her reaction.

CCS 23

Tomo-chan has a cute singing voice.
Sakura is STILL scared of ghosts even though every damned card is pretty much a ghost.
Oh well, this show is still fun and dangerously adorable.

Daily Lives of High School Boys 2
Each bit was pretty good.
The ED was wtf.
Lost it when the butlers starting chasing each other around with the false tooth. That part was the best.

Highschool Boys 2

The rpg bit and the butler bit were the highlights this week for me. Always remember to properly equip yourselves guys :(.

Kaiji S2 1 & 2

Similar to how Kaiji can't get enough of beer and chips, I can't get enough of watching him gambling. I miss this show.

Yeah it felt like she was teasing him, I think Chihaya must be one of the only people to stop her from
smiling
during a match, which is why she acted the way she did.
