Nobody, I repeat, nobody faced with zombies a couple of feet behind him, will run into a group of zombies in front of him dodging them trying to bite him, just to gain a couple of feet of space and then "safely" turn around. Not in real life, not in a video game. But in Resident Evil 4 you do. Because of shit controls.

Ah you are one of those psychos, thanks for clearing that up.

Metroid Other M is a fantastic game, Samus is as agile as it needs to be, i like the Alien tribute story, didnt mind the baby the baby the baby (thank god for the spanish translation not saying baby, although I would have liked it to be dub), dont think that having fear after having killed Ridley many times makes the chracter wrong and had lots of fun with the game.
Take off the dont move scanning thing, the linear gameplay (not the story, although it could tell the same thing taking out some content) and change the music to an orchestra esque type Metroid saga music and you will have an amazing game.

Also FFIX is the best Final Fantasy game.

I love Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 equally.

Dead Space 1 controls suck and make the game less fun, its scary at first but throwing you a bunch of alien zombies all the time and diying becuase you control like a fucking tank is not scary at all, is fustrating. Is a Resident Evil 4 wanna be.

Aquaria is a boring game. No, its not like any Metroid title.

Smash Bros saga are fighting games, you like it or not.

Wii was an amazing console, I love most of my 50 game collection, but I also think the console needs to die already. Time to move to Wii-U.

Apart from some gems I would like to play, PC gives me the same as having a PS3 or 360 but even better.

Epic mickey is a fantastic game.

There I said it.

It has some problems here and there, and the music could have been better. But I really like the game.

Halflife 2 is a terribly boring game. Tried to play it about 3 times now and I never make it that far. Gunplay is boring and slow. And I hate the whole silent protagonist thing as it makes zero sense.

I agree completely sir. I don't understand what makes this game held in such high regard. The vehicle sections really sucked.

actually, anyone with any weapons training will understand that they have a much better change of delivering a fatal shot by planting their feet, using both hands, and aiming carefully. this, rather than running and spraying fire wildly behind you, hitting nothing.

In real life it would obviously work better to stop while shooting, but in a video game where all realism flies straight out the window as soon as you enter the village and zombies appear? If you're making a game that has no basis in reality, why insist on keeping a mechanic from real life situations?. Dead Space, which is basically RE4 in space with zombie aliens, is far superior in how it handled shooting IMO. That said, they do admittedly go for somewhat different things, in that combat in Dead Space overall felt much faster-paced than combat in RE4. At least going by how I remember RE4, haven't played it in years, and I played the godawful PC version pre-patch.

I probably have the most "controversial" opinions in the entire thread, but........

Japanese games IMHO are better and more polished than Western games. I also think Japanese developers are more talented than Western developers in general. *runs quickly*

There are too many generic FPS's on the market and Western developers rely on them too much. I actually like them, but they are not that great to the point where they need monthly releases.

MGS4 was amazing and gave me feelings and emotions no game has ever provided me with before even to this day.

I am an open minded gamers and usually enjoy average to low rated games.

I do not care for PC gaming.

I pretty agree with Japanese developers, overall, seem more talented. Although, western developers, that create rpgs especially, are far more ambitious than most Japanese games. Strictly speaking more towards pc wrpgs, moreso than the typicall Bioware stuff, but of course include them for BG1/2+exps.

you're really not saying anything by saying "leon moves like a tank". you act like there's some kind of universal gaming dictum which states that anything which can be analogous to a tank must be bad.

the converse is, "marcus fenix in gears of war moves like an epileptic."

You are right. In fact, a tank can move from a full halt, backwards and turn as fast as it can move forwards and turn. Thats not the case for Resident Evil 4.
I revise my statement: Leon moves worse than a tank.

And having zombies pop behind you,
Are we talking about Dead Space 2 or RE4. I don't remember this ever happening in the game, unless you of course did not pay attention to your surroundings.

you being forced either to turn around as slow as a bulldozer
You turn around in an instant with whatever the button plus back is.

In reality the controls are shit.
Nope. They are perfect.

And you know it.
Don't force your opinion on me. I've never had any problem with the controls. Game plays perfectly for me.

Of course I wouldn't do that in real life. In video games? You mean the things where I use rockets to propel myself higher into the air, throw grenades with wild ambition, shoot exploding canisters placed around war zones right next to medical buildings, hide in the grass in a green suit to hide from an enemy who's right in front of me, and run and shoot and then instantly dive to the grown to shoot somewhat better. Yep video games are never unrealistic.

The controls are fine.

Burnout Paradise is the best Burnout game.

Oh the lack of giant neon barriers with arrows on them is missed by some because they need the crutch and it's lacking a throw away mode that is a minor diversion at best, but the immense amount of content added for both single player and multi-player on top of the improved controls and sense of speed puts it above all others in the franchise.

Rare was never that good of a developer.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark might have been the best console shooters of their time, but that is not really saying much.
The same goes for FRD's Timesplitters 2 (made by ex-rare staff), bad controls, short and disjointed single player missions, coupled with some fun multi player modes. TS3 was far better.

Conker was a funny, but fundamentally frustrating platformer with a lack of game play polish.

Haven't played the Banjo games so I'm not going to comment on them.

Here's another one. Eternal Darkness is one of the biggest piles of trash I've ever played. I am dead serious when I say that I had more fun playing Superman64 than this garbage.

1. I miss WWII shooters and i think there are not nearly enough
2. COD: MW fucked up the FPS genre.
3. KILLZONE 2 was perfect before the patch. I blame the community.
4. I blame MGS2 for the my-eyes-are-camera-lenses, that fucks the immersion in most games.
5. The problem with MGS4 is that it has many details and because you know this, you cannot have fun with the gameplay.

6. Good games = good story not good graphics. Always.

7. The best shooter ever was MOH for the PS1
8. The best GOW was the first
9. Uncharted 3 is a unigue game and an important one in the history of video games, because it has gameplay in set pieces that in other games are plain cutscenes.
10. Most JRPGS are boring, most WRPGS are shallow.
11. Open world games are shit by definition and should be banned. Games need structure, like novels, open worlds in games shutter this and kill the fun. Nobody likes Open worlds in games, they just pretend.

12. This generation has the most expensive, boring and uninteresting games ever!
13. Online should be an optional add-on. Most of the times is shit and not everyone plays online. I don't.

Dead Space, while being a good game, didn't hold a candle to RE4's gameplay. The shooting in RE4 focuses on the weakpoints of the enemies and I think that's why they went with the static firing stance. Also there's a big difference in "shoot a weakspot, go in and melee" and "run backwards and shoot until enemies are dead".

I actually agree with this too, but it will be a very unpopular opinion. Interesting concept and story, but the combat was clunky and there was a decent amount of it.

Also Yorda getting in the way and the lack of challenging puzzles. Some of the platforming was very weak too, which is disappointing considering that's basically what the game revolves around.

Yes it has great art and atmosphere, but Ico is blown waaaay out of a proportion.

Actually, the thing I liked most about Ico is that it reminded me of a Sega game :P

We shall agree to disagree then.

BTW, who is the gentleman in your avatar?

Perhaps you're just crap at Dead Space. That's not how it plays out for me.

(See how annoying that is now?).

I don't think there is any room for movement in this discussion. Resi has Marmite controls and we ain't about to have our minds changed by each other.

second.

To be fair DS has it's cut things were cutting body parts does kill things faster. Too bad the Plasma cutter pretty much does the entire job for most of the game.

RE4 is one of the few games where I use every weapon.

I think Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are incredibly average and overrated by pretty much everyone.

Little Big Planet was a piece of shit.

Mass Effect was a terrible game. Mass Effect 2 is a better game but still merely above average.

Xbox Live is the biggest rip-off in gaming right now.

Despite owning an iPhone for over two years I think the games on iOS are largely pieces of shit and stuff you could play on web browsers for free. Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja and geoDefense are the only games I was happy with how much I paid for them.

Following up on that Angry Birds is fucking awful. It's not even a game as much as it is a cutesy trial and error implementation.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was the entire reason I bought my Playstation 3 and while I was happy playing the game was definitely not worth the purchase of the system for it.

My Playstation 3 gets even less play time than my Wii.

Super Smash Bros Brawl is not as good as Super Smash Bros Melee.

I think if you like Sonic the Hedgehog you're 100% a closet furry.

With very rare exceptions I think anyone who considers themselves a journalist within the gaming industry is a joke. The quality of writing, editing, content and the pressure to get hits no matter what really makes me not respect most of the people. I truly miss the old days of EGM / Gamepro / etc.

Following up on that I bought Grand Theft Auto IV on launch day because of the universal praise it got from critics/reviewers and this was the most blatant lie this generation. It was quite obvious that most reviewers based their reviews on the opening hours of the game because after that it goes to shit. Done with the GTA franchise after that.

Halo 3 had the best multiplayer.

Call of Duty games are fucking awful.

Dragon Age was mediocre.

Square Enix is such a shell of their former selves that it's kind of depressing. Compare their current generation offerings to either their SNES or PSX library and you could barely tell it was the same company. Even their PS2 offerings were better.

I wouldn't be sad at all if Capcom went out of business today. After the way they killed Mega Man, didn't bring over the latest Ace Attorney game, the way they lost both Mikami and Inafune, their awful DRM, releasing the piece of shit beta Marvel vs Capcom 3 then releasing the actual game nine months down the line, Dead Rising 2 fiasco, etc I'm done with the company. They are no longer relevant to me.

Come at me, bros.

Grand Theft Auto is the most overrated series of all time. It's chock full of design and gameplay flaws. The only appeal lies in going outside of the missions and causing mayhem. But you can do this in so many other games and do it better, like in Crackdown.

Uncharted is another grossly overrated series. Certainly the acting is very good, but the gameplay is nothing special, the games suffer from weird difficulty spikes, and the "oh shit" cinematic moments are so absurd that it ruins any sort of believability in the game's plot. I'm simply suppose to accept that Nathan Drake is some sort of superhuman even though the game's story tries to portray him as some sort of regular Joe.

Super Mario Sunshine is the best 3D Mario

You are fucking nuts.
Its by far the worst Mario game of all the fucking franchise, with New Super Mario Bros (NDS) coming in a close second.

But maybe you love it because you like bugged games, coin fetch quests and shitty cameras. Maybe you are a Sonic Adventure fan, that woudl explain it.
That or you played in summer, I usually know that people who played that game in summer love it.

Final one from me:

-I genuinely feel sorry for those that think the 360 is the best console they've played.
What does this even allude to? And you "genuinely" feel sorry for them? Over a games console? Methinks someone needs a holiday to realign there perceptions and priorities.

Shadow Complex is vastly overrated.

Final Fantasy X has the most deep and strategic combat system of any Final Fantasy mainline game.

Final Fantasy XIII's story wasn't really bad at all until the last 20%.

The only good game in the Seiken Densetsu series was the first one (Final Fantasy Adventure). Secret of Mana is probably the most overrated game of all time. It was bad when it came out and has aged even worse.

Lost Odyssey is the best JRPG this gen and Blue Dragon is average, at best.

My most regretful purchasing decision in recent history is my PSP.

Super Mario Sunshine is the best 3D Mario

Wind Waker is the best 3D Zelda

MGS4 was fantastic, all MGS games are great. MGS3 was the best one

Zelda should go back to being 2D only

Uncharted 3 was the same shit and should have gotten blasted for being so

Gears of War 3 was the same shit and should have gotten blasted for being so

Halo Reach was the same shit and should have gotten blasted for being so

Resident Evil 4 is the best Resident Evil, REmake comes at a very close second

FF7 is the best main series FF

FF Tactics is the best FF over all

People who say the SNES Mario Kart was the best Mario Kart game should be shot for having nostalgia goggles so damn thick.

The Wii's motion control scheme is terrible and should only be used for games like House of the Dead/Resident Evil Chronicles because it's only great in those cases.

Silent Hill 4 was great.

Killzone is a terrible series and should be compared to HAZE

Fighting games with comeback mechanics suck

I don't understand when Valve fanboys love how Steam servers crash during sales, They should be complaining to them demanding better servers , it has happened every sale for as long as I can remember. Start complaining instead of going "Oh Valve, you so silly"

Xbox Live gold is a successful scam, charging people to play online and no, the service isn't good to warrant the price.

Nintendo should crash for not porting Super Metroid to a portable console like its other SNES games

Nintendo should burn for not making another 2D Metroid

Aside from the bolded (because i don't play those franchises so i don't know really) you are me.

People who put exclusives up on a pedestal or think they can't be touched by the competition or multi-platform title should pull their heads out of their asses.

I have 9:

The original Mass Effect was better in every way to Mass Effect 2.

Bioshock 2 was better than Bioshock in every way.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude was a really fun game.

Braid was an amusing story trapped in a terrible platformer.

Call of Duty: World At War is the best Call of Duty game.

Half Life 2 sucked.

Brutal Legend was a horrible self indulgent game that should have stayed dead when Activision canceled it.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Harvey Birdman are the two best Wii games.

Duke Nukem Forever, past the Duke Dome, was actually decent.

Couldn't sleep, thought of one more, I don't think Blizzard has ever made a good game. I've played Warcraft II, III, Starcraft, WoW, Blackthorne, and they were all bad games. I hear Lost Vikings is good, haven't tried it.

  • The Sonic the Hedgehog games on SEGA Genesis have gameplay that is mediocre at best, and are remembered way more fondly than they deserve. People that "love them" have either never played a good platformer, or are just kidding themselves.
  • Chrono Trigger is great, but certainly not the best console RPG ever.
  • I want Microsoft to fail in the console market b/c of the RRoD scandal.
  • Crash Team Racing (PSOne) is the best kart racer ever made.
  • MGS 2 is not a very good game, and should be stricken from the series.

Bioshock offers nothing new to gaming. It rips off major story beats from its predecessor (System Shock 2). The mid-game Andrew Ryan scene pales in comparison to the mid-game Polito scene, relying on shock and gore and physically pounding its point home. Whereas Bioshock says
"bwa ha ha you were never in control because you were under the effects of hypnosis"
, System Shock 2 says
"you have no choice but to obey me because left to your own devices you will die in this ship, so stop complaining and do what I say."
Bioshock's plot is lazy, uninspired, and falls completely to pieces in the third act. And the gameplay only feels complex if you've been raised on a diet of twitch corridor shooters; it's so dumbed down from SS2 as to be laughable. I really can't understand why the game got so much praise.

And a couple of bonus ones.

Sonic Spinball is probably the best Sonic game ever made.

Majora's Mask is the best 3D Zelda game. Twilight Princess was shit. Wind Waker had great ideas, but executed itself poorly.

Uncharted has the best multiplayer from this gen.

Mass Effect is a bad series. The combat is legitimately bad, and I cannot get invested in the characters as beyond lip syncing there is no facial animation, so every line in the game is delivered with a blank expression.

Dead Space 1 controls suck and make the game less fun, its scary at first but throwing you a bunch of alien zombies all the time and diying becuase you control like a fucking tank is not scary at all, is fustrating. Is a Resident Evil 4 wanna be.
I seriously said "are you fucking kidding" out loud when I read that. The controls are sublime in DS, even more so in DS2. Seriously, if you struggled with DS's controls, I would probably recommend staying away from TPS's altogether. DS is probably the most perfectly tuned TPS control system I've ever had the pleasure of using. I didn't even realise there was tweaking options until my pal wanted a go and had to un-invert the Y axis. Yeah, he's one of those wierdos.

You guys really believe Mario Sunshine is the best 3D mario? I really need to see your reasoning for that.

I thought it wasn't fun, at all. Which is a shame for a mario game.

I think people who dislike the Genesis Sonic titles simply cannot comprehend level designs in platformers that are more than a single plane, or don't know how to play the games.

Top Bottom
