lol. these avatars are so fucking corny.

guess what? GAF already knows. write your fucking congressmen and women!
and I'd be happy to pimp slap anyone with one of these stupid avatars who HASN'T already done that most basic thing. if that's you YOU'RE DOING IT FUCKING WRONG.

You're right. Thats why I wrote them and have signed several petitions. I advice everyone here to follow the google link on google's main page to one such petition and then write your congressman. Its 5 minutes of work, but it could mean the difference between a lifetime of internet suppression.

Here is why you should care

hopefully people will get the message that THEY have to do more than change an avatar. It's about the FOLLOW-THROUGH, and that follow-through is an e-mail (at minimum) or a phone call to your local rep. They're in the phone book. Oh wait, this is the internet generation...just google their phone numbers. Place calls to their local offices.

But don't you people dare changing your avatar just to make yourself feel "in the club". You're not. In fact, you become the problem. All show and no go. Do something for a change. You'll feel good and you add to a collective effort looking to stomp this shit down.

Cheers.

Added the two new variations and some more info to the OP. Google and Wiki are definitely getting a buzz going.

I'm not sure what blacking out your avatar would serve at all in the actual purpose other than a statement of "I can't really do anything worthwhile to help this cause so I'm going to do something dumb instead".

When a major site which provides a service or discussion platform goes on a blackout, they are effectively telling showing all the people who are using that platform what happens if the internet reaches a point where such a service or platform can no longer exist. It's effective and gets people to think about it.

What does an avatar blackout do? It makes you look like a moron for a day when you're posting on GAF. Lol.

lol!

Some porn sites have their banner blocked as support too, that's the spirit.
When even TBLOP is getting in on it you know you've got something special. (Seriously looking at their main page is mighty depressing.)

Fight the good fight, guys. I've written everyone I could write and signed every petition I could sign. All that's left is to do is hope. :|

A closed site is better than one that has a pop up banner everywhere you go on the site asking you to call your senator.. and there's no way to remove it.

I might want to start supporting SOPA now waking up and seeing "How to Access Wikipedia During the Blackout" trending.

I just hope people here blacking out their avatar don't think badly on people posting Facebook status about raising breast cancer awareness. I know a lot of people hate that for some reason but this is the exact same thing.

Sad part is, us American's morale has been knocked so low, I called my parents this morning, asking them to take a few minutes out today, so join the petition online, and call our local congressman.

My parents literally said "Whats the point anymore? If the people knock this down, they'll just punish us in some other way."

So sad that this is immediately what they think. Sad part, is that they're right. When is the second revolution going to happen!?

Btw guys doing this for only 24 hours is stupid. If you actually want to prove a point, it would have to last for more than one day. More like a week. Its not even a valid strike or demonstration.

No one will realise or imagine the consequences just over a day. It will ultimately prove nothing.

EDIT: Im disappointed by wikipedia. The danish wikipedia is up. I was hopeing it would be worldwide, to get more support from outside the US.

Censored avatars: the most useless gesture of protest yet conceived by mankind.

It really is sad, because it makes people feel like they are doing something, when in reality its worthless. It's really not that hard to call your Congressman, but in a situation like this, it is the only thing with any merit whatsoever.

The bigger problem is that nobody is going to give a shit about a bunch of black avatars even if they're that way forever. There's nothing wrong with slacktivism but there's nothing right with it either.
