Miniseries

On the planet Tython, in the center of the galaxy, an order of warrior monks strives to maintain peace and to balance the mysterious power known as the Force. But a stranger is coming-one who will destroy both peace and balance, and open the galaxy to exploration and conquest. This is where it all begins!

John Ostrander and Jan Duursema of Star Wars: Legacy fame reveal the mythic age of the Jedi's beginnings!

Normally I would put news like this in the comics topic but since this is going to be a unique miniseries and its being written by an exceptional writer I think it warrants its own thread:

I'm assuming this is canon then?

edit: read a bit more... Not familiar with Legacy. Can anyone comment on how good/bad it was in handling the Star Wars universe/chars?

Gonna fuck everything up. Watch.

I don't think so. John Ostrander is a terrific writer. He created Grimjack, Suicide Squad for DC and did the previous Star Wars Legacy series which took place in the far future of the SW universe and was hailed as being great. He is a well regarded writer plus Lucas has already done enough damage so I don't see how this can screw up anything.

It's considered one of the best SW EU stories in recent memory

So this is seriously going to be considered the canon definition of how the Jedi came to be? Does Lucas have to bless these things personally or how does that work?

The proposal for the series got sent from Dark Horse comics to Lucas Ranch and Lucas had to approve of everything and give his blessings for this to have even been solicited.

I don't like this at all. The best part about fantasy is the mystery behind it all. If you just lay it all out then what's so mysterious? Boiling it all down to something some guy makes up cheapens it.

I thought people said Legacy was shit because it killed so many characters off.

this, there is no need to know the origin, and are people even going to take this seriously? The art itself makes it seem like cheap fan fiction to me

Maybe I dreamed it, but I'd swear years ago Lucas mentioned that the Jedi order first came to be long before lightsaber technology existed and they used regular ol' metal swords. BOH-RING!

EDIT: And now that I actually look at the artwork in the OP, it seems to bear that out.

Not quite.

Licensing manages all the canon stuff. Lucas himself rarely is involved in the approval process for most of the EU stuff. For something like this, maybe a quick check with George may have been done with a one sheet or something, but I suspect nothing too elaborate if anything. And Licensing is based in the Presidio complex, not the ranch.

This is true. The Old Republic deals with this stuff too. I'm curious if they will maintain the same canon.

I think your referring to "legacy of the jedi" which is a novel series. Star Wars Legacy takes place hundreds of years after the films so none of the characters from the movies are even in the series.

Hmm, I think I am. Is Legacy going to be made into novels? I like Star Wars books but there are so many shit ones I pick one the good ones(Thrawn, X-wing, ect) and if it's as good as you say I'd be interested in getting that too.

FUCK the expanded universe, trying to always explain how every little thing works. Over analysis of star wars, especially concerning things that are meant to be magical/mysterious, just sucks all the fun out of it.

Yea its good and its a comic series (with a finite ending) as far as I know there are no novels for it. You can start with this book it collects the first 7 issues and see if you like it:

John Ostrander? John Fucking Ostrander!?

This is going to be great. Now excuse me, I'm off to find and dig up my pile of Grimjack comics...

That's why I like Thrawn and X-wing. They keep it close to the movies, simple and expand it in a way you can see it expanding. Not all this other weird shit.

Regardless or the writer, the art, the quality of the story... if George Lucas is involved it'll be one to avoid I'm afraid.

Example: I rewatched ep IV-VI bluray editions recently having not watched these since the originals back on VHS- oh man did they put so such useless crap in. It's the same sad junk Lucas dumped all over the prequels, fart humor and incessant CG everywhere. The whole extended scene in Jabba's palace with the CG-ized singer dancing everywhere was cringe-worthy for me. Just when I thought it was over they cut to the outside where a giant frog/plant thing eats some hapless critter and blasts out a giant burp. Good god...

Between the prequels sucking pretty bad and stuff like that added into the original movies gives me little hope that there's any chance for a good result here.

Sorry for the rant...

Good thing he ain't involved then

The Jedi have been ruined for me for a long time.

In the original trilogy I imagined the Jedi Council to be on some quiet, isolated planet where they could contemplate in humble surroundings.

Nope.

They're on the busiest planet in the universe, surrounded by flying cars and living in what looks to be a fairly glamorous HQ.

What? The silly burp is not in the original, and all the extra dance bit and Dr Teeth looking dude are certainly not 1983 vintage. The scene, yes, but extending things like that out with useless juvenile fluff is annoying at best.

Still fear George will touch this, somehow.

[EDIT] Found the original. Muppety, yes, but that's what we started with.

I was referring to the Frog creature eating the thing outside. it's from the original but you make it sound like it was added in later on.

It's EU, why would he?

Geez, I realize people don't like what he did to the original trilogy or the prequels or Indy 4, but goddamn at some of this irrational hate projection on anything that could possible be remotely connected to Lucas being potentially involved in some vague miniscule way.

I have my own ideas about the origin story of the Jedi. Frankly George Lucas isn't making this so it is not real canon, it is EU canon.

frog dude

Gotcha. I just found the unnecessary burp to be a perfect JarJar moment, adding to my distaste from the previous scene.

I guess my real issue is do we need to know the origins of the Jedi? Can't it just be a lost cosmic myth, kinda like how we didn't need to know the details in episodes I-III, imagining them was just fine, and added to the magic of the whole storyline. Either way, I probably won't read this so I should just shut up. I stopped at extended universe stuff years ago. Save for Force Unleashed I'm tragically out of touch with the lore.

But... those are already Jedi. Sounds more like an origin story of the sith to me.

George Lucas agrees? I don't know, but to me the Jedi would do well with D.C. comics, just so we could see them fight Martian Manhunter. ;)
I've always wanted to see Batman wield a light-saber.

He would destroy 99.8% of Jedis. Jedis would be street level in most comic universes.

Sounds pretty interesting. I like the cover. The guy with the green mask looks like a major villain in the story. That cover gives me somewhat of a medieval fantasy vibe. And I presume the Sith race will be involved in this, right?

Oh my GOD, those characters looks so terrible. It's like Miami Vice x Prince x Kurt Russel x Star Wars x Awful Character Design.

New origins series sounds potentially cool. I'll keep an open mind, though I'm inclined to agree with those who'd rather keep the mystery.

You are so right Dr. Doom, I don't even want to imagine what would happen to them with Marvel, xD.
