Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

-Hated Skyward Sword for various reasons

-Hate all iterations of Playstation controllers

-Could not finish Bioshock (boredom)

-GTA IV was cumbersome, boring and cheaply difficult

-Banjo Kazooie was better than SM64

-Super Mario Sunshine was awesome, as was Double Dash

Crash Bandicoot 1-3 are better than any of the platformers on N64.

OK, maybe that's not controversial enough.

Super Mario Sunshine is also better than any of the platformers on N64.

Playing a game on PC in 2560x1600 16xAF , 16xMSAA and Ubersampling, doesn't make the game more fun.

Don't let the envy confuse you. It does. :P

Also, wtf with the Starcraft hate?? I understand Starcraft 1 with it's awful pathfinding and anachronistic control but Starcraft 2?? If you want something with real grand time strategy, how about going to the awesome genre of turn based? Or hear they are really good and shit.
Seriously, played SupCom, Sins of a Solar Empire and both were slow and boring games that lacked the depth of turnbased but had none of the fun of Starcraft. There.

Starcraft is as responsible for killing the RTS genre as COD is for turning all FPSs into generic dudebro. It's not really Starcraft's fault, but people think that it's the only type of game that sells. Starcraft and COD are pretty much lowest common denominator type of stuff. It's funny that FPS fans of COD also label other games as too slow and boring. I'm not sure how you can call SupCom boring if you've played a few online games of it. At the very minimum, the combined arms warfare of air, land, and sea on a large map opens up vast tactical options that a small RTS cannot do. Even a very small scale game like Company of Heroes has so much more depth than Starcraft.

It seems that mostly anyone with a Japanese style avatar of an obscure Japanese game tends to have the same opinion about western gaming and Japanese gaming in general.
If you want to be an idiot and generalize people then sure, but I would hope GAF posters would move past thus.

Guess I was wrong.

Likewise I guess anyone with a western game avatar is probably a dudebro.

How people complain about the amount of text and cutscenes in the last Zelda and prefer actual RPGs with even more text, numbers management, and cutscenes, baffle me.

but okay

Maybe because actual RPGs generally have writing that's a bit more involved than that sorry excuse of a plot/character writing in Zelda games?

I think it aged 'okay' in respect to it being a) Nintendo 64 title (everything from this generation aged terribly), and b) the first real 3D platformer that really made 3D gaming what it is today. And it plays well enough, which is really an issue for a lot of older 3D games; the controls.

That's true, the controls have aged wonderfully compared to pretty much anything else at the time. I'd never recommend the game to anyone now though, whereas some other games from the time still feel well-made to me.

Still prefere to play many games on PS3, and have to say the difference from 1,5 - 3 meters (5-9 feet for the stoneage people), is negligable.

I play in 1080p too, but I'd still love for my IQ to be better. I sit ridiculously close to my 32" set.

Here's my opinion.

First,Zelda.
- Links Awakening, while a nice game itself, is the worst Zelda game.
- A Link to the Past is only slightly better.
- Oracle of Ages is the best 2D Zelda ever created, followed by the first Zelda.
- Twilight Princess is a great game (except the tear hunting) and the size of Hyrule Field was absolutely right.
- The 3D Zeldas are the superior games.

- Prince of Persia 2008 is better than Sands of Time.
- Super Mario Bros 2 and 3 are better than Super Mario World.
- Suikoden V, while having some great moments, is mostly rather dull and boring.
- FFXII is the best RPG ever created and FFX is just an alright RPG.
- I personally don't like most of Nobuo Uetmasu's Work. He made some great tracks, but the rest bores me.
- Kumi Tanioka, on the other hand, is one of the best composers.
- I didn't like any GTA game, but I think that Bully is an excellent game and Rockstar's best.
- Mario Kart Wii is the best Mario Kart (so far,I still have to play MKDS)
- F-Zero GX is the best racing game ever created.
- Banjo-Tooie is the best platformer ever created.
- Donkey Kong Country 3 is really bad.
- Starfox Adventures is a good game, even though the ending sucks.
- Banjo-Kazooie : Nuts and Bolts is a great game.
- Metroid Prime > Super Metroid. MP2 is the best.

I like this thread. It shows how extremely different people's opinions can be.

The inability of third parties to capitalise on the enormous userbase attracted to the Wii is one of the gravest mistakes the modern industry has made, and it is one which will come back to bite traditional gaming hard in future.

I disagree It's not going to make a difference to anyone but nintendo because I think there's a big reason why it's mainly been Nintendo Systems in the last couple generations that don't have third party support.

It's because the install base is there but they haven't done anything to foster third party support and it keeps biting them, they can say all they want about the Wii-U having it but I think it's more of a mistake on Nintendo's part than anyone elses.

KILLZONE [PS2] is easily my favorite in the series and securely in my top ten lifetime.

The Gabe weight and Itagaki complexion digs always bum me out.

Oh man, I LOVED Killzone. I played through that so many times, wonky animations and all. That was my favorite shooter for a long time.

I don't have a ps3 yet, haven't played 2 or 3. I've tried 2 at a friends house, and just couldn't adjust to the speed of the aiming or controls in general.

- Every Zelda game is the same. You only need to own OoT & LttP
Only time I actually liked Nintendo was during the N64 and gamecube

- Eternal Darkness isn't scary at all and such a disappointment

- Braid was boring

L4D and L4D2 are overhyped and boring.

MGS4 was the best experience ever playing it for the first time.

I fucking loved Heavy Rain

I have never beaten any legend of zelda game ever because they bored me to tears. The closest one I've gotten to beating was OOT but stopped at water temple. The shortest one? I Played 3 to 4 hours of windwaker and never touched it again.

I also think 3D Mario games suck. I'd also like to mention I played the loving shit out of New Super Mario Bros Wii. That game was alot of fun.

Uncharted 2 and 3 also bored me. I played them more for the set pieces and the flash than anything else. Those goddamn enemies take way too many fucking shots to die and don't react to getting shot. Fuck that.

I loved the gameplay in Killzone 2 and 3.

I love the sharpshooter and think it gives me a literally unfair advantage when I use it with a 100' screen and proper calibration. It becomes a matter of simply pointing at the enemy, and pulling the trigger..... Also it's easy to track and take down moving targets.

GAF hates LA Noire, that means I'll probably love it and I should go buy it immediately.

I also love Halo, and think the universe is wholly cohesive and the gameplay is amazingly solid.

I hate Resistance 2. I love Resistance 1. I love the Resistance universe and think it has some of the most interesting backstory and concepts in Video games.

Call of Duty MW1,2,3 are incredible single player experiences. I find their usage of the first-person narrative unique and interesting and wish more games would use their style of story-telling.

I am everything GAF hates. GG.

You misunderstand. This is not simply talking about Nintendo's relationships with third parties. There was a vast segment of the market untapped that third parties never even remotely attempted to appeal to, and I feel the market has moved on now. The window of opportunity has closed, and any potential brand recognition going forward from the Wii has basically been squandered by everyone who isn't Nintendo.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: TWW is the "true" OoT to me for the Zelda franchise, consisting of graphics, combat, characterization and exploration that can rightfully compete with even current gen Nintendo games. It has aged better and plays better, and embodies a large overworld with the right amount of exploration I think we should continue to see from the series.

Yep. And has been for years.

Yeah that's not really controversial. Gaming tastes put aside here, other than Nintendo how can anyone argue that? Japanese devs have almost no pull or power in this industry anymore. Nintendo's the one making all of the money and the rest of them are struggling to stay alive or struggling to adapt to a generation that's just about over.

Totally, totally agree. And it's the best looking past-gen game on my plasma HDTV.

I'm hoping the anti Japan backlash ends soon, since trends eventually change (who thought there would be a fighter revival this gen)...

That reminds me...

-The fighter revival is the only thing stopping me from ditching consoles and being PC/handheld this gen

Why do you dislike Donkey Kong Country 3?

The Uncharted series was made for people who don't want complex, mechanically deep games, and appeal to people impressed by flashy set pieces, tons of story, and simple, easy-to-learn hand holdy gameplay that guides them through the entire experience. Even then all three games are ripe with stupid ideas, repetition, and copy/paste gameplay that rarely reinvents itself and usually milks a single boring gimmick for far too long (looking at you, Uncharted 2 train), while doing a good job of making the player ignore these facts with WOW EXPLOSION MAN THE GRAPHICS ARE AWESOME. No game in the series is Top 10 of the generation material, and the series as a whole pales in comparison to the more creative, interesting and involved games that have come along.

/bought and enjoyed Uncharted 3 at launch regardless

I don't understand how some people consider 2D zelda games that much better then the 3D ones.
Compared to the 3D games the 2D zelda games are very simple imo. the extra dimension added A LOT to the series. The way puzzles are handled because of the extra depth that is created by the extra dimension and the way the world is built up is far superior to the 2D games imo. Just think of all the things that weren't possible in the 2D games.
I also like the larger worlds that actually feel larger. I don't like my Zelda games concentrated. I want a large world to explore. The more compressed the world becomes the more gamey it starts to feel.
This is part of the reason that I don't like Skyward Sword all that much because in pace ( besides the slow start ) and how the world is created it is possibly the game that feels the most like a 2D zelda game. Besides the point that it became more linear.

And somehow I only feel this way about Zelda. I feel the opposite about mario games. Because in mario games control is everything. And 2d mario games just felt more accurate and more complex. Galaxy changed my opinion somewhat though and I would consider it one of the best mario games ever made. But the best is still Super Mario Bros. 3.

And I think that metroid possibly changed the least with moving to 3D. Even though the perspective has changed the core gameplay/experience hasn't changed as much as Mario or Zelda. And I love the 3D and 2D games.

Ok, sorry I misread it than.

This thread is great, because it shows you how crazy different everyones opinions are and that you should never take them so seriously. Also shows that nobody knows what makes a good game and we are all over the place. Developers should stop catering to anybody and just make the games they want...

I really liked the first 7 hours of Uncharted.

Well, my controversial opinion:

Personally, of the three tribes games, I feel that that tribes: vengance was by far the most fun. I enjoyed T:2 for what it was, but I don't have the fond memories like those of T:V.
T:V was incredibly good fun, having a much nicer blend of arcade action and depth thanks to mixing the UT core with the tribes formula. It was a joy to just play :-)

I don't understand how some people consider 2D zelda games that much better then the 3D ones.
To me, it's because While the 3D zeldas games are not bad, I just don't enjoy them as much as I do playing a Link to the Past or Links Awakening.

I've been playing Orcania of Time on the 3DS and I think it's a fine game but I replayed Links Awakening a couple months ago and still think it's superior.

Oh, this is fun.

- Parasite Eve 2 is way better than the mediocre original.

- Sega Genesis sound chip sounds much better to my ears than the SNES equivalent.

- BlazBlue is superior to Guilty Gear.

The only good thing microsoft did as a result of entering the industry was pushing sony (and nintendo a little bit) to embrace online play, demos, and games.

Why do you dislike Donkey Kong Country 3?

I don't like Dixie Kong and really hate Kiddy Kong. While there were some nice levels, most of them revolved around a gimmick and dragged on too long. I don't like it how Cranky Kong and Funky Kong appear in this game, and I don't see anything great in the other characters. I tried DKC 3 several times and every time I stopped because I didn't like it. It's ok that others like that game, but this game is really not for me.
But I think that the first Donkey Kong Country is a masterpiece.

I've tried a bunch of series, exclusives, and gimmicky add ons from PS1 through PS3 and they just never seems to be as good as people say they were. Oh sure, there's a couple of exceptions, but I find the PS3 to be the worst mistake I bought this gen. However, I love it as a bluray player, always up to date and never having any problems with the discs. I'm in no way saying Sony sucks and blah blah blah, but i just don't think that their products and exclusives are as good as so many people claim them to be.

I only like the HD ports if the game is one of those that are a bit tougher to find or at least from quite a bit ago (like Beyond Good and Evil). But with them "updating" popular series that aren't that old or when they are only making the game look prettier, I don't like that at all.

As much as i liked the Galaxy series, I would much rather have it like Mario 64 and Sunshine. One world for a series of stars with slight world differences for each I felt were very nice. I would absolutely love to explore entire levels and I could tell you the entire layout of any of the Mario 64 levels.

Graphics comparisons are just plain horrible. You should buy a game regardless if the grass looks 2.3% better on the other console or PC. And speaking of graphics, if that is the first thing that people always mention about a game, then that probably means there's nothing else going for it. I have seen many games where the graphics look really good, but the game play brought nothing new or just wasn't good. But the games were still help in high regard just because of the graphics. I remember when people didn't want to be like that, but now I just see so many who are.

I really like DLC, except for map packs. Pretty much because too many games don't incorporate good server lists for it. For example, some might have a couple of server lists that only use the new maps, but not too many people play them. What they should do, is have 3 different kinds of server lists for people (at least in the beginning). At first I think they should have 1)A server list with just original maps, 2)A server list with just the new maps, and 3)A server list with all maps included. That way if people want to try out the new maps online, they have a selection for that. But after a bit, they should go to just 1) and 3).

Perfect Dark Zero's multiplayer was extremely fun. Uncharted's is not.
