Edit:

Oh yes, this quote.

"It'd be like throwing a chair into a bunch of Jackie Chan's!"

Devil Hunter Yohko 01 - 03

Dang that first episode, how far were they willing to go, I genuinely thought for a moment Yohko was going to get raped
he did everything, and I mean everything but put his dick in her
before motorbike person was going to bust in.

Devil Hunter Yohko - 04

I just watched half an hour of music video compilation... wut!?

Ah, someone else has discovered Yohko.
Good, good.

[Gintama 98]

One problem that I have with pretty much every show that I like is the knowledge that one day, I'll be out of material, or the material itself will become significantly weaker over time. This isn't really a big problem because many of my favourite titles are short, sharp and reasonably self-contained, most stories don't go on forever.

Yet there still comes that time where I catch myself thinking 'I hope this never ends'. As Gintama is, for the most part, a comedy it has the versatility to continue more or less as long as it wants. This wouldn't necessarily be enough to keep me interested as the quality of the directing, writing and animating could all go downhill at any point, as most very-long shows tend too.

Sometimes, of course, this happens. Yet, rather than shying away from it the show actively highlights when it's engaging in filler or when the budget is low - this 'breaking the 4th wall' allows the show to embrace all the dips in quality that you'd usually find in a fairly clever way.

Of course, there are still episodes that I don't find particularly interesting on any level, and the shows comic tone can wear after a while, but there's generally an antidote from that problem as well: the serious arcs. These serious arcs keep the show from getting too stale and allow for all kind of unexpected and semi-lasting changes in the world which you don't often see in long-running comedy shows.

[Gintama 99]

Of course, this shows blatant disregard for it's own time-period also helps them tell whatever kind of story they want, be it sci-fi, fantasy, historical or topical. It's kind of like Urusei Yatsura in that they have carte blanche to do whatever they want. This helps to keep things 'fresh'.

This is also why Galaxy Angel has a million episodes.

It's not a blatant disregard for its own time period so much as a setting which uses "aliens" as an excuse to mash together past, present, and future Japan into one crazy alternate universe.

See, my problem with Gintama is this really isn't true. Any attempts at continuity are quickly ignored when a serious arc is over and all character development can be forgotten for the convenience of a gag. Even when it looks like there is a serious lead up to a change in the status quo, it ends up being a troll. There are several story threads going on at once and not one has been resolved. It definitely makes me worried for whatever Sorachi has in mind for the final acts.

That's why I said semi-lasting. The show remembers that these things happened but when it's just being a comedy (which is most of the time) it doesn't really care. Which I'm at peace with, because it's still a bit better than how these shows usually operate.

It's that thing where you wink slyly, rather than jamming them hard in the ribs with your bony elbow.

So THAT'S why women kept telling me to stop elbowing their tits! Lessons learned!

In other news, picked up Redline at Best Buy! So awesome! ^^

A Tree of Palme

Yay or Nay?

Hmmmmm.

I wish I could give you a proper assessment of it, but I turned it off about half an hour in. It's a beautiful film - beautifully animated and designed, beautiful music - but I found it near-terminally dull. I should revisit it, as I was a massive fan of Fantastic Children (same director/writer and aesthetic), but not one of my favourite DVD purchases, that one.

In a "gross, this movie is boring and not good" way, as opposed to, say, Midori-style gross.

I can put up with a lot, but being boring is where I draw the line.

I think it's definitely possible to maintain a sense of humor after a "wham episode" that completely shakes up the world. One Piece and a few other long running series do it all the time. Gintama just doesn't really try even though I am 99% sure Sorachi is capable of doing it.

I guess I'm just disappointed there's something grand going on behind the scenes and the main character himself seems to have a tragic Kenshin-like back story, yet it's never acknowledged.

"The switch"
I bet Nelvana edited the shit out of stuff like this in the dubbed version.
Not that it is a particularly controversial topic. Personality/character switches have been around forever.

A hilarious episode! So much fun watching trying to adjust to each other's life-style.

Oh man I haven't ice skated in several years.
Makes me want to go down to the local rink for a couple hours.
Sakura trying to ice skate is super hnnnnng.

Now, if you're looking for a grotesque and emotionally-crushing experience like Midori, or a groty & awesome movie like Tetsuo, I can probably think of some examples, but they wouldn't be animated.

What kind of a person do you think I am?

Because whatever you were thinking, it was accurate.

This has been happening to me for a while, but now I've got to ask, what is the full name of this grotesque Midori thing, because everytime I see the name and the word grotesque my head is filled with this image.

Midori-and-Seiji.jpg

And it just plain confuses the crap out of me.

That is the superior Midori, but I think there is some sort of horror anime/movie with the same name.

Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki

Don't google image search it!

Midori is not Midori no Hibi.

Midori is Shoujo Tsubaki, about which you can read more here.

They are very different.

I like how that Papa show just sort of glosses over how horrible things are and doesn't bother to deal with the emotional fallout of losing your family moving the story so swiftly along to get them all living together as quickly as possible. What really makes the show weird is how one minute it really does have that genuine saccharine sweetness and the next they'll have an ecchi eyecatcher. The show doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

Sounds like it suffers from Ai Yori Aoshi syndrome.

Yeah but Gintama is just a gag series, when all's said and done, it doesn't seem to be that concerned with becoming a long-running story kind of show. That's not to say I wouldn't like to what that show would be, but Gintama isn't trying to be it. It's kind of like Patlabor in that sense, they both occasionally delve into the 'serious arc' but that arc rarely affects the day-to-day comedy episodes.
