The thread of trolls and misconceptions.

A lot of these posts are rage worthy.
I wonder if people will ever be able to acknowledge the qualities of a certain loved game without being able to enjoy it themselves.
And other people accepting the reason why a person can't enjoy it.

Yep, there's opinions, and then there's using this thread as an excuse to be the insufferable douche you always wanted to be.

One day we will all be newtypes.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre are gravely overrated SRPGs (especially since it is extremely likely they would be voted the #1-2 SRPGs ever on GAF), mainly because of JRPG/Square fans who care more about grinding/breaking the game (and nice graphics) than deep tactics mechanics (or a sane pace to combat).

Gamecube has a better library than the Dreamcast

So did the Xbox, which is practically the heir to the Dreamcast as far as Sega is concerned.

Also, Sonic is one of Sega's least important/worthwhile titles/brands. (More so if we talk about Sega as a publisher. Platinum Games, Creative Assembly (mainly for one game so far, lol), etc.)

Not so much as controversy but I guess it counts:

Love Epic Mickey
I think that Dragon Age 2 is great
Loved MGS4's complete ending
Alpha Protocol is a good game (a classic RPG with modern graphics)
Hate most over the top games.
Loved Arkham City's
abrupt
ending. I think it totally represented the situation that happened.
Bioshock 2's story is great overall.
Medal of Honor is a fantastic FPS (SP-only)

This is a thread of catharsis. GAF needs this every once in a while.

Next opinion: when I express bitter schadenfreude at a business or developer or magazine or website going under, I'm tired of feeling the need to always add the standard "I'm-not-a-psycho-and-of-course-I-feel-bad-for-those-who-lost-their-jobs" disclaimer.

I have never totally understood peoples' complete and utter devotion to Jet Grind Radio. I get that it has a cool concept/presentation, but I played it, thought the control was too horrendous to be fun, and never looked back.

- Despite having some alien influences in game design TBC is still the best expansion up to date in World of Warcraft. Sadly Wow will never be "that" type of game again. And i will never return to Wow beacuse of this.

- The story and cinematics is what makes the MGS games memorable and special in a good way for me.

- The only good thing about Nero in DMC4 was his arm and the new gameplay style it offered.

- Dark Souls is one of the most important games this gen. Why? , beacuse its hard and punishing, yet extremly rewarding and fair. I really hope this game affect how more game developers design their games in the future.

- I found FF IX to be highly overrated, and yes i played it at the time when it was brand new.

- The triple triad card mini game in FF VIII is the best mini game ever created in a FF game.

- I think a big part of Rare producing fantastic games for the Snes and Nintendo64 was Nintendos involvement. Not the talent within Rare themselves.

- After finishing both Demons Souls and Dark Souls last year, i have come to the conclusion that i dont find that much of an enjoyment playing "normal" games anymore.

Shadowman 64 is the greatest game of all time.

ONLY YOU CAN DO IT SHADOWMAN.

Man, I loved this game on the Nintendo 64. The voice acting was hilarious (if you like it, check out War Gods also on the Nintendo 64), the graphics were some of the best on the system and I remember finding it really addicting. Never did play the Dreamcast version. Superior?

Final Fantasy Tactics is the best Final Fantasy game.
The entire Metal Gear Solid series is garbage.
Nintendo went creatively bankrupt after they released Pikmin.
The best GTA game isn't as good as the worst Saints Row game.
League of Legends is far superior to DotA (original mod and 2.)
The last JRPG to tell a compelling story was released on the original Playstation.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is the best beat-em-up game ever released.
The original Mario Kart was awful, the series peaked at MK64, and then the rest have been irrelevant.
Demon's Souls is decent, but vastly overrated.

I think that is all I got.

I don't think screen tearing is that big of a deal.

I don't care / notice framerate drops that seem to push other people to the edge of sanity.

The entire Metal Gear Solid series is garbage.

Noooo.. best Metal Gear Solid is the alternative timeline one. And it's actually good.

If I were in charge of Sony, I'd divest the company of its concerns in the console gaming industry or at least try to partner with Microsoft to make hardware for the next Xbox. At this point, the Playstation division is an albatross hanging around the company's neck. Better to go back to the company's core competency (engineering) than to try making a billion dollar gamble on a low-margin, winner-takes-all sector every five years. Screw flagship or prestige products - what have they done for me lately?

So yeah, the PS3 and PSP would see out the ends of their lives and the PSV would see out a year long grace period before being put to sleep in the night if it didn't live up to sales expectations set for it. There would be no PS4 and all studios would be repurposed or sold off.

I'd leave the music and movie industries too. It's the desire to control content that kept the Walkman in the dark ages and left room for the iPod to rise.

Possible Controversial Opinions:

I enjoy playing Kinect Disneyland
I think MLB the Show, is the best series of games on the PS3
I enjoy Xbox Live immensely
I have never understood portable gaming. I've owned a DS, a PSP and multiple smartphones.
I thought Limbo was a single note the whole way through, got bored quick.
I think the Sims series of games are terribly underrated and don't receive enough appreciation.
I think if it wasn't for my love of gaming, I would be a millionaire by now.

Super Mario Sunshine > Super Mario 64

OOT is just not enjoyable the billionth time around, but Wind Waker is.

Halo sucks. I found nothing special about it at all. Coming from a huge PC gaming background, I was truly dumbfounded on how people thought it was the best thing ever.

Don't care if it sucks, I want VO in games instead of text dialog, but silent protagonist is fine (Gordon Freeman) if the rest of the cast has voice.

FFVII is not as good as FFVIII or FFIX, but FFVI is still the best followed by FFIV.

and Finally, I do not want motion controls in my games.

Yeah, I love this thread.

Sonic is still shitty, I loved Generations but they just got lucky lucky. Next 5 games will be shit again.
Megadrive rocks SNES, just because.
Uncharted is superoverrated, as it was Tomb Raider.
Crysis is pure shit.
Bizzarre is one of the best SH of the millennium (not really unpopular on GAF)
RPGs just suck. JRPGs might be funny but are so fucking boring and slow.
Mobile gaming fucking sucks. It's like pretending browser flash games are the future, screw you you make me sick.
Deus Ex HR was pretty meh.
N64=GC>>>Wii
I want a new Gameboy.
Sonic 2 was good, Tails was ok.
Sonic Adventure 2 is one of the best 3D sonic games. The first Adventure is one of the worst.
Kinect is for dancing and I'm ok with it, Dance Central 2 is a great game.
aaaand
Skyward Sword is the worst Zelda since AoL.

I have a few:

Skyrim is not very exciting or fun at times. The loading times and the system freezing (I have a 360) completely take me out of the experience.

Halo: CE pretty much killed any chance I'll play the rest of the series, even though Halo: Reach is almost like COD4 in its execution and its campaign. Even then, I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Street Fighter IV should have never come out. Capcom should have just stopped the series with SFIII and moved on.

Super Mario 64 is pretty close to garbage. Fun garbage but still garbage.

I don't fully understand the Bangai-O games and I don't find them to be very fun.

Bastion looks great, sounds great, the narration is cool, and the gameplay ruins all of that.
Bulletstorm is one of the best FPS games this generation
Alice: Madness Returns is excellent in every way
Mirror's Edge is one of the best games this generation

Just off the top of my head.

Just wanted to point out the bolded. I was expecting something from Bastion, and a Gauntlet type game wasn't exactly my idea of fun (has never really enjoyed any GAUNLET game).

I don't think screen tearing is that big of a deal.

Same with Jaggies and "only" 30 FPS.And the occasional slowdown, which is quite present in N64 games. Playing entire games with a frame rate lower than 15 FPS on my first PC surely helped. Having the best image quality is of course nice, but it really isn't a big deal for me.

I love to love things and respect other's rights to love their own different things even if I can't find the fun in them.

That said, it was still fun to let out some personal opinions without disclaimers.

Yep, there's opinions, and then there's using this thread as an excuse to be the insufferable douche you always wanted to be.

Actually, I've found it rather interesting how obvious the difference has been in this thread.

What's been somewhat less obvious is who is serious and who is just trolling.

-NES Megaman games are too hard
-Console gaming>>>PC gaming. I dont see whats so good abt a mouse and keyboard
-I think we all really want Nintendo to succeed

It's only been out a few months and the prevalence of Dota 2 e-sport tournaments have already utterly ruined an expansive, complex and customizable experience into a game where everything is categorized, tiered, standardized and minmaxed to hell and any deviation from the formula used by the "pros" is ostracized and ignored. It's prevalent even in our own GAF Dota 2 megathread. Even as a years long DotA-Allstars player, somehow Valve has managed to make the Dota 2 community more unbearably dreadful, albeit in different ways, than the original, despised community.

E-sports ruin everything great about video games and needs to burn to the ground.

I like to point out that this was why I hated EXP WEEKENDS on Metal Gear Online. Everybody playing RANKED, when all I want is to do Sneaking Mission game types.

I will admit to never having played that one. Do you still wait in air vents for 5 minutes for guard A to walk away from guard B?

It's mostly broken into screen by screen action (think Legend of Zelda), so it tends to be a bit quicker pace. I enjoy it more as a 2D stealth game as well, since you can view the section from over head and it becomes more of a puzzle game from that point. I'd give it a try if you can find it.

Funny thing is, I tried to think of "controversial" opinions to post myself, because all that giant blocks of crap I posted about posters posting in posty-post land. But I can't really be arsed to try and be controversial, I guess.

My best attempt is the standard "I think games are fun and can't be bothered finding excuses to hate on them."

More from me.

- Far Cry 2 is brilliant and beautiful.

- Tim Schafer's only good game is Full Throttle.

- The Monkey Island games aren't funny.

- Ditto Sam and Max.

- Telltale are the Emperor's New Clothes.

- Limbo is trial-and-error bullcrap that attempts to compensate for its gameplay shortfalls with its atmospheric sound and graphics. And succeeds. Annoyingly.

- Sonic 4 is pretty fun.

- Bioshock 2 was better than Bioshock to play.

- I'm tired of people saying "this generation". It's in every other post! Every darn game is the something of "this generation".

I don't really see how a lot of these are "controversial". There's a good deal of opinions here are game-specific that I agree with, and, of those that I disagree with, I can at least see their individual viewpoint even if I don't subscribe to it.

You enjoyed Other M? So did I. You think Uncharted is pretty shallow fluff? So do I. But ultimately, so what?

You want a controversial opinion? Hi-Def is unimportant. Frame rate is leagues more vital than resolution and always will be.

I get happy every time a fan game/fan remake gets the cease and desist. Those people are just milking franchises they don't even own and stealing attention from proper indie devs

What about fan localizations for games that are never coming over?

The Assassin's Creed series takes what could have been interesting historical drama exploring segments of history that games usually stereotype with broad strokes, and completely ruins it with bad science fiction and Da Vinci Code garbage that never should have been in the series to begin with.

Preach, brother! That info turned me off the first game (to my benefit).

You want controversial? I put Uncharted's gameplay over any other third person shooter/action adventure this generation. ;)

Actually, I've found it rather interesting how obvious the difference has been in this thread.

It is interesting. There is a clear line between posters expressing "controversial" opinions, like criticism of a revered game or praise for a disliked game, and posters who simply use this thread to say what they're afraid to say in other threads (these posts tend to involve overt fanboyism and ignorance). I guess it doesn't matter what you're saying, but how you say it. It's ugly but I'd be lying if I said I haven't read every page.

Not really controversial, but Bethesda and Creative Assembly made good games, but modders made them great.

Nothing innovative comes out of consoles, and they are holding back PC development.

Yeah, there's a thin but clear line between "I didn't like [game x] because of [y]" and "[game x] sucks and anyone who likes it should rethink their lives" or similar such posts.
