Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Yeah, fuck off dude. Take your high horse with you.
How angry would you get if I suggested that many people play the 'Souls' games to look cool on message boards and not because they actually enjoy them?

Probably not as angry as I got when I realised I'd double posted and looked like a moron.

You should get an iOS device too. Cover all bases ;)

Yeah i'm starting to get converted a little bit. My GF mostly just plays her iphone for games now (especially mortal kombat, she is obssessed with it) and she has got me into it a bit.

It's no substitute for my other handhelds or consoles but it is a neat little device. The screen quality compared to the 3DS in particular is a really nice bonus.

This thread is gold.

Ok, here is my contribution:

Anyone who whinges that Demon's/Dark Souls are hard is a pansy, once you learn the mechanincs they are far from it.

Resident Evil 4 is an over rated, camp piece of twoddle. Resi 5 is much better.

Kind of feel like a dick for my posts in this thread, doesn't seem right just outright hating on some games, with so much effort going into them >_>

Presenting what I've said in a less childish manner:

-I believe Fallout 3 to be the best rpg I've played, better than New Vegas and Skyrim
-I dislike the additions made to Minecraft since Beta, and feel that it doesn't seem like a complete game yet
-I dislike the GTA games, and think the Jak games and Simpson's Hit and Run did a better job with the formula
-I don't like Bad Company 2's controls, visuals, single player and multiplayer
-I think Age of Mythology is the best RTS game I've ever played, better than Starcraft, AOE, Dawn of War

There, conscience soothed >_>

I payed 30 dollars 4 years ago for TF2, with the game getting constant free updates and now it goes free to play? Fuck you Valve. They add some garbage weapons and the game is ruined forever.
So, you're complaining that 4 years after you payed a very reasonable amount for a content rich game, 4 years, it's disgusting that it is now free to play? I'm lost for words.

I guess I have a few:

-Xenogears was a fantastic story and soundtrack wrapped around horrible dungeons, awful second disc pacing and mediocre gameplay and battle systems
-Gears of War 1 is better than Gears of War 2 (campaign for sure)
-LOZ: Skyward Sword was OKAY. Twilight Princess was a snoozefest
-Final Fantasy 6 is not in my top 3 FF's at all (yep, 7 is number 1)
-Resident Evil 4 is the best RE in the series, followed by 2 (that might not be that controversial actually...)
-There hasn't been a Kart racing game I have enjoyed to this day more than Crash Team Racing on the PS1 (which I preferred to Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing at the time)
-I enjoyed Heavy Rain even though I'll never play it again (yes, already got the Plat trophy too)
-I enjoyed Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger (not to say I dislike Chrono Trigger)

Could not agree more also found BF3 to be extremely mediocre. The only thing that BF3 had going for it was it's visuals, the single player was atrocious, controls sucked and the multiplayer was average. MW3 was just as bad, it's visuals were terrible, controls average, Single player terrible and multiplayer average at best.

Firstly, playing a slightly obscure Jap-ARPG makes you look cool huh? Why even play them if it's simply a "looking cool" thing? Just say you do and no-one would be any the wiser. I brag about playing them to look cool, and I don't even know what type of game it is, and I'm surely the coolest cat on the forum.

i don't think it's controversial. it's hard to overplay just how special RE4 is. RE2 is a great big ambitious sequel with a crazy finish, not unlike ALIENS to the first resident evil's ALIEN.

-I enjoyed Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger (not to say I dislike Chrono Trigger)

in a way, i agree with this too, though i'd say they're vastly different games. CROSS seems more expansive and ambitious, but because of this can also be construed as somewhat plodding at times; TRIGGER, on the other hand, is much more streamlined and almost never dull, but this can make it seem unmeaty.

regardless, both fantastic.

Assassin's Creed is a boring, average, repetitive series, which only has one plus side; the free roaming cities are beautiful.

I bet this post will COST ME MY LIFE.

actually, i've said the same myself - were the games nothing more than 'historic city parkour sims', i'd likely still buy & enjoy them :) ...

Angry Birds (regular, Seasons, Rio) are good games. I'd hate to live in a world where too many games were like them, but they're decently challenging games if you go for 3 stars, with a fuckton of free content at regular intervals. Crush the Castle is a pile of shockwave shit in comparison.

Final Fantasy VI, VII, and X are the only good Final Fantasy games. XII is terrible.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is better than any of the FF games.

Oblivion and Skyrim are tied for the two best RPG's ever made. Both are light years better than Morrowind.

The Sega Saturn was better than both the N64 and PSX.

The Shenmue series is one of the best ever made.

The new Mortal Kombat is the best fighting game in a decade.

- Persona 3 sucks
- Survival horror games are usually awful - All of the games in the Silent Hill series are boring, and RE4 is the first RE game that is any good.

Brofist.

Also, your opinion on rpg's (japanese and western) and consoles is horrid.

Totally agree with you, I wanted to like the series, I really did... but the gameplay just felt so sluggish with that lack of mecahnical depth I find in a lot of western games. Not to mention all the stupid Desmond stuff, game should just be a historically themed series, no sci-fi BS.

Retro gaming sucks! . . and I am not some 14 year old, I am 29 and have been gaming since I could remember. I started with the 2600 & NES and have owned most of the major systems since then. The vast majority of those older games are not worth going back to (though there are exceptions like Super Metroid which is still amazing).

Resident Evil 5 is much better then Dead Space. (in fact I think RE5 is one of the most under-rated games of this gen).

Mirror's Edge is also under-rated and should be considered one of the best games to come out of this generation.

While I enjoy and play the Gears, Killzone, and Resistance series, they are all over-rated (keep in mind, I only play single-player). None of them are on par with games like Bioshock, Fallout 3, Uncharted 2, Batman: AA.

I didn't enjoy Mass Effect as much as others have but honestly I don't really see how anyone could have really loved that game enough to give it GOTY-calibur honors. I just don't get it.

i'm not going to weigh in on RE5 v DS--i think they're too dissimilar to compare--but i will say that being able to replay missions in RE5 kind of hurt the game, even though i was powerless not to exploit it.

Square should hand over Final Fantasy to an American dev team.

Without Nintendo to copy the industry would be lost.

That would be the end of final fantasy... Seeing the konami & capcom attempts this gen to give Ip to western devs , i know that unless miracle ( Castelvania LOS ) , they are going toward failure.

I love this thread.

So do i.

It still works.

Sorry but warcraft 3 , and starcraft brood war are FAR , FAR from being garbage.
Now i can understand that you don't like Wow ...but blizzard is more than that.

-Xenogears was a fantastic story and soundtrack wrapped around horrible dungeons, awful second disc pacing and mediocre gameplay and battle systems
That's not controversial at all ( except the bolded part )

Playstation 3's first party line up is very underwhelming. Games like Infamous, LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted are all average at best gameplay wise while Heavy Rain is awful.

- 98% of people who berate Nintendo games for being toys and plays an Xbox or PS3 are either sheep, hypocrites, or both. News flash genius, it's still a video game, and you're not cooler than anyone because you paid more for it.

- FFX-2 is not that good of a game, and not because of the story alone. The whole layout of it from the battle system, to the mission layout on down is just not good.

- Though I do not hate Xenogears by a long shot, I preferred Xenosaga Episodes I and II to XG (Episode III is garbage).

- Morrowind was overrated and I'd rather play Oblivion or Skyrim.

- iOS/Android as game platforms over a actual game console/handheld is a retarded idea and should never happen, and if it did I'd likely stop playing video games.

Pretty much think the same thing.

Isn't that true of any game though? I mean, some people might say the original Mega Man games are pretty tough, but once you get the mechanics down, you can breeze through those games rather quickly. Hell, that's probably applicable to anything in life actually. Rocket science isn't tough, because once you learn the mechanics, it's all so obvious.

Nintendo consoles and handhelds are for little kids and anybody over the age of 14 who owns one should be embarrassed. Fuck Mario games. He's a fucking plumber, I played that shit when I was 6 years old, fucking retire him already.

Wooo, underlined and bolded text. You really meant that.

It's ok, I'm a Dolphins fan too, I know why you are so mad.

I think we could be good friends if we just talked about Sega. Let us not discuss fighting games or RPGs though.

-All Zelda games after LttP have become overly long and tedious

-Square games have basically sucked ass since they merged with Enix

-Kane & Lynch 2 is fucking awesome

-Mirrors Edge is one of the best and most underrated/'preciated games this gen

-RE5 and Prince of Persia are the two of the most disappointing "sequels" to come out this gen

-Out of all of the Megamans, 2, 3 and X have the best music

-Dreamcast was nothing special

-The only thing N64 was good for was playing MP Worms Armaggedon

Flower is the biggest none game i have ever tried. I tried the demo for 2 minutes than deleted it from the Hard drive. Flower should not even be called a game in any way shape or form.

Final Fantasy X has the best FF battle system.
Is that really controversial? (I honestly don't know what the GAF consensus is on that game)

It's a statement I'd agree with. I wouldn't say the combat systems are remarkably different in the FF games (with maybe the exception of FF12 and 13), but FFX definitely felt extremely polished and versatile. I especially liked how you could see the turn order too, which let you plan ahead more effectively.

-Out of all of the Megamans, 2, 3 and X have the best music

I'm sorry, did you mistake "controversial" with "conventional" opinion? I see those listed in "best video game music" threads all the time without much opposition. (and I totally agree, btw)

BioShock Infinite's 1999 Mode is the absolute dumbest thing I've heard in awhile. I love the option for a more demanding experience (TM) but calling it the 1999 Mode is such a blatant nostalgia grab and is pandering to the neck beards that whine on message boards about the good old days of game design and blame the industry's short comings on casuals. Besides if they had any courage at all they would put in the 1989 Mode, no save points, one hit kills, invisible platforms... you know the REALLY good old days because older is better apparently

Also anyone who loves Elizabeth (thats the female lead in BI right?) but hates the moe craze in Japan needs to step back and realize Elizabeth is how it starts. Big eyes, innocent, needs protection... don't you just want to protect her gaf!

Also saying FFX has the best battle system isn't controversial at all. Speedy turn based combat was amazing after ATB and FFIX in particular. While I love FFIX the battle system late game was soo slow and feel apart once it was impossible to know when your commands would trigger

Speaking of FFIX, best ending to a game hands down

Bring my beloved Dagger back to me! Admit it GAF, you're getting misty around the eyes right now aren't you. Me too
