Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

EverQuest has been and will always be better than WoW.

As a kid, I hated Super Mario Bros. 3 and still do as an adult. Super Mario World is great though.

I can't enjoy any Dragon Quest game, I find them archaic and the story in each is pretty worthless to me.

And people that play games mainly for the story, that aren't adventure games or have mediocre gameplay, are crazy. Crazy, I tell you!

The Dragon Quest games have really good (and very balanced) gameplay though.

Goldeneye N64 sucked. There I said it.

Totally agreed... maybe because I already played Doom and Quake before seeing Goldeneye... but playing it 4 player just wasn't very fun. Awful framerate, extremely repetitive levels, horrible midi music...

So you don't like DQ games because the stories are worthless, but you don't get it when people play games mainly for the story. I'm seeing a little friction between those two points.

I think that, in general, the people who think DQ stories are generic/worthless are only looking at the big picture. Yes, the overarching stories are nothing. It's the little vignettes along the way that are the stars of the show.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games ever and is recognized as such by all serious people.

The shocker is that Resident Evil 5 is a magnificent game in its own right and will never receive its due reward simply by having the misfortune to follow arguably one of the TOP 5 games of all time.

It's not just because it followed RE 4, it's because it was significantly worse in several key areas including boss battles, pacing and having forced co-op in single player. As an example, compare the lead-up and actual fight with the El Gigante in RE 4, to the garbage turret sequence against a bearded El Gigante who appears out of nowhere in RE 5.

Xbox 360 had the best launch titles compared to PS3 and Wii.

Japanese games are overhyped by gaming hipsters.

Crackdown and Alan Wake are both underappreciated and should have sold platinum x1000.

Kinect has fun games.

* I think people who can't at least fathom the appeal in turn-based combat have ADD.
* Xbox 1 had one of the least appealing lineups for a mainstream console
* Online play is overrated. I'd much rather play local multiplayer or by myself, instead of random racist 12 year olds from the boonies.
* Dudebro is a great catch-all term.
* Star Ocean 4 has great gameplay
* Vanquish single-handedly shits all over every other third person action game
* 2D Mario/Zelda/Metroid >>> 3D Mario/Zelda/Metroid
* Gaming hasn't been the same since SEGA left the hardware market
* SEGA-CD gets way too much hate, there are a number of bonafide classics on the system (too bad most people only remember Sonic CD and the shitty FMV games)
* I feel the people who are so anti-Japanese gaming are probably pretty boring people in real life, the kind who won't even try any food that's more 'exotic' than chicken fingers or watch subtitled movies.

What is a gaming hipster? I know what a regular hipster is (living within proximity to Brooklyn and all) but this is a new term for me. I don't think people hype good games just because they are Japanese, they just hype them because they are good.

Bayonetta is a piece of cheesy garbage for people who have never seen a boob in real life and who go week at the knees when a women speaks to them. I say this as somebody who found it physically hard to watch as my friend played through the first level or so. He never went back to it.

  • SOTC was overrated and featured a terrible camera and an immersion killing framerate.
  • The only decent Metal Gear Solid game was the first one. The rest were increasingly crap, culminating in the steaming pile that was MGS4.
  • The God of War games were ruined by those fucking QTE segments.
  • The Gears of War games never deserved the sales they received.
  • Too Human was a pretty good game.
  • I can't stand indie titles

I enjoyed Resident Evil 5 much more than Resident Evil 4 - having played both during release. I think Resident Evil 5 is a better game because of of the multiplayer and I think that the whole concept of the game being more action and less survival horror was already in full effect by RE4. (seems to be a more popular opinion than I thought though)

Anime is a terrible and lazy art style, I could put up with it in 8-bit/16-bit games and some very early 3D games without a problem but I hate modern games with that cartoon anime style. I also have always loathed anime cartoons, I barely put up with it when I was 11 years old to watch Pokemon... that's the extent of it.

Shenmue was boring as all hell and I loved the Dreamcast and like adventure games.

Sonic & Knuckles on Genesis was my favorite Sonic game followed relatively closely by Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. That being said, I haven't played a Sonic game newer than that and I don't plan to anytime soon.

Vanquish and Bayonetta both totally blow.

Oblivion was not good.

Killzone 3 is better than Killzone 2, Gears of War 1 & 2

Mario is a kid's game. A good game nonetheless, but still I feel for kids.

Agree x1000 on the first 2 points.....not so much on the last 2. Crackdown 1 was ok I guess though.

Final Fantasy VII - Not that cracking of a game to be honest. Didn't like the whole feel of it. Surely with the amount of praise the game has been given, something must've been 'right' but I just totally didn't "get it". I much prefer Final Fantasy VIII.

Another few games everyone else seems to adore but I don't;
Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid (1 - PSone and Sons of Liberty PS2 were good), Mario, Legend of Zelda, The Elders Scrolls, Deux Ex.

I think Heavenly Sword is one of the best games ever, definitely the best this generation. The motion-capture work by Andy Serkis and the other actors made the characters 'come to life' like I've never seen done, better than LA Noire. The facial expressions of the cutscenes especially with Kai were flawless. The design of the game is incredible, I totally love the whole theme about the game and the Japanese influences throughout the game. The characters were incredible as too their voice-actors (Anna Torv(Nariko), Lydia Baksh (Kai), Andy Serkis (King Bohan). The game had the best antagonists (except Roach, wasn't too keen on his design but the voice-actor was really fitting). The God of War-influenced gameplay worked perfectly and the different attacks via stances with the Heavenly Sword was just brilliant.

- Virtua Fighter is the most generic, boring and stiff piece of crap I have ever played. And where is the L in Virtual?

- Pretty much all Nintendo franchises except Mario are extremely overrated. I don't mean they're bad, they are actually excellent. But they're nowhere near the God-quality people attach to them.

- Pokemon is the best JRPG.

- Portables should not try to imitate consoles, and should have experiences that are more suitable to playing on the go.

- Devil May Cry is ridiculous and embarrassing. I don't want to play as some demon-douche in a demon-douche world.

Sonic the Hedgehog works in 3D, they just haven't done it right except for Sonic's stages (minus crazy gadget) in SA2.

A game full of SA2 levels with SA2 physics would be pretty damn great.

I really don't understand why people love Legend Of Zelda and Monster hunter, they felt very boring to me.

And of all the sonic games I played I love Sonic heroes a lot....

Handheld gaming is ridiculous.
Halo is tedious and boring, both online and off.
Oblivion is one of the best rpg's this gen.
Call of Duty 3 wasn't that bad.
Shigeru means nothing to me, other than having come up with a bunch of games I never liked.
Quake 3 > UT, in every way.

edit
I forgot one, though I'm not quite sure its very controversial. Romance options in rpg's is the worst feature I've seen in ages. God damn stupid ass shit!

Good lord, I agree with the first one, but thats a personal preference. Halo online boring? Halo 3 is my favorite online fps ever. Oblivions leveling system is completely broken. Call of duty 3 is okay, but still probably the worst in the series. No opinion on the next one. Last, UT is > Quake 3 in most ways.

Well, this is a good thread to let out all your video game shortcomings, I guess. ;)

Thank you.

I'm going to go ly down. I think I'm taking this entire Internet bussiness far too serious. And I apologize for my emotionally pathetic meltdown. But what can I say? I'm obviously one for the melodrama. I mean I do like FFXIII after all.
Feel better dude. Tag is gone. It's a new day.

That's weird then seeing as how my lady friend loves the game, and loves the character for being an over the top, silly, cheesiest of cheesecake MILF.

Why would you bring rationale in to the controversial opinions thread?

That said, your particular lady friend, let's be honest, is probably one of the few exceptions to the rule I made up.

Wii Graphics are garbage even with HD cables. I plugged in SMG2 and it still looks like I'm looking at graphics through a fish tank. Whoever said these graphics made it look like a first gen 360 game are smoking that la la la la.

That's certainly possible, and I'm only posting to keep the thread's momentum going because I'm enjoying it so much :p

First-person RPGs suck, whether its a game like Skyrim or the battle style of the Dragon Quest games, the 1st person view in these games has always irked the hell out of me.

In general I prefer third-person perspective games, especially for my rpgs. I want to see my character fight, not his/her arms.

On this note, I think any game that first person perspective whether it be shooter or RPG, Japanese or Western, sucks. Lemme see my goddamned character.
