suck it, yukiko fans!

So first time being out of games on gaf. Anyone watching the new series of Tantei Opera Milky Homes? It's pretty cute. Also Another is really good too.

One thing I will tell you is that School Day's Sequel WILL NEVER be released here uncensored because of something Makoto does in one of the routes.

Vampire Princess Miyu OVA 2-3

I was unclear, at first, on the concept of Himiko: she is a skeptical spiritualist (the irony is lost on me) who is hired to do stuff she can't do, e.g. exorcise demons, which Miyu turns up to do for her. Episode 3 cleared this up for me; she can hold an arcane trinket up, wiggle her fingers, say some incantations, and ward off said demons, although she still can't exorcise them.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would. Though not particularly flashy, it has the kind of attention to & care for detail and consistency in its art and animation that seems to be common in an 80s OVA but lacking in modern works, which is refreshing to see. Narratively, it straddles the line between serialized & episodic and doesn't quite do so successfully - it's sort of a horror anthology with a few recurring characters who aren't terribly fleshed out, though I appreciate that Miyu herself seems to occupy some ambiguous line between protagonist and antagonist.

And, sorry, the score still vacillates between "rich, suitably atmospheric" and "corny 80s elevator" music.

It's pretty good. Reminds me of a horror version of Twilight Q, but with recurring characters and nothing as remarkable as the second episode of that series. This is probably mostly the fault of Kenji Kawai and 80s hair.

Vampire Princess Miyu OVA 4

The flashback episode which more clearly addresses themes of the obsession with eternal youth & beauty (what all vampire stories are really about) and the morality of carnivory (vampires gotta eat too).

Or, I'd like to think so. In reality it's pretty competent but vaguely pointless and a bit dull; we had three standalone episodes that didn't really do much except introduce the 2 recurring main characters, and we have one here to give them expository flashbacks without really fleshing them out much. This might work better in a much longer series and/or placed at the beginning of the story, or if there WERE a continuous story more substantial than "Himiko and Miyu talk about demons sometimes."

Basically, though, they drew out individual strands of hair in this anime, and that wins it a lot of goodwill, so it's a 6-7/10 overall.

Have you seen the TV series, or are you going to watch that now? While the OVA series is okay, the TV series is better all around, in my opinion. I really liked the Vampire Princess Miyu TV series, and I quite rarely watch horror.

It is still often episodic, but the stories are usually interesting...

As for the OVAs though, yeah, they work okay as a beginning or something, but only tolerably as a stand-alone series. Of course, they were made early in the manga, so you'd expect it to be not as complete as the much later TV series. At least the four stories of the OVA are decent, though not as good as most of the TV series episodes. They did also try to have some kind of conclusion by having an ending of sorts for Himiko's plotline.
Himiko's not in the TV series -- Miyu is the main character there, while Himiko's only in the OVA. Also, after the first episode, most of the TV series is from Miyu's perspective instead of Himiko's. I think the OVA's perspective works as a beginning -- and ep. 1 of the TV also isn't from her perspective -- but the series as a whole benefits from her being the lead, I think.

(On a related note, they changed Miyu's character some between the manga and the OVA/anime, and I think the change was for the better, she's a stronger character in the animated versions really. Even between the OVA and TV series there are some differences -- the TV is more of a reboot than a sequel -- but not as much as between either of them and the manga.)

WHAT? I MISSED SOMEONE WATCHING SCHOOL DAYS? FUCKING KATAWA SHOUJO AND HAVING A LIFE!

Oh well, may as well post what I watched recently...

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing 12

Shit, it is hitting the fan. Definitely another build-up episode to a much more exciting and climactic episode. Seriously, this show is nothing but TENSION. I really wonder how this is going to turn out since there's clearly an underlying plot within the current conflict. I wonder if the Loli Fuhrer is going to get backstabbed. They'll have to develop her character a bit more to give that any real impact, though they definitely have time.

I am EXCITE for this week!
Yeah, tension is really the name of the game with Last Exile Fam, that's for sure. And yes, it's still the best show currently airing; Bodacious Space Pirates is in second.

Bodacious Pirates 2

Huh... another setup? Interesting that this show is moving much slower than Nadesico which had FUCK YEAH GEKKI GENGAR in like the first episode. And now it's... cyber warfare? I'm not exactly complaining. Despite the noticeably slow development pace, the pacing itself is very solid and I don't really find myself bored. It reminds me of slice of life almost, and the MC chick has shed some of her "I'm a country bumpkin" impression I got in the first episode. Let's see where it goes...
Yeah, this episode's concept was a surprise, I wasn't expecting something slower and more subtle either, but it works really well, so I'd call it a good surprise overall if anything. And yeah, the MC clearly is in her element when she's piloting a spaceship, for sure. It's a pretty good show.

A little maturity goes a long way.

Definitely, it really does make things better.

Rinne no Lagrange Ep.02

Thank god there was no fanservice in this episode.

Um... are you watching the same show other people are? I saw plenty of fanservice in that episode...

My favorite kind of fictional 2D girl is the type who seems like she has an internal life going on beyond being so moh-ay &/or mounting the MC's dick.

Hataraki Man does at least succeed at this.

I like my girls with the ability to manipulate paper and turn it intro giant airplanes and stuff.
Not a requirement but a preference.

Anne of Green Gables 34

I'm impressed at how well they take the three biggest relationships for Anne - those with Diana, Matthew and Marilla, and Gilbert - and make the work invested in them up to now all pay off in emotionally effective ways in the same episode. Creating the snowstorm scenario as a way for the subtle romantic tension between Anne and Gilbert to manifest itself was an especially bright move.

Princess Tutu 23

Excellent episode once again. This is looking to wrap up so well.

School Days 2

Steady as she goes.

Arjuna 1

Well, an interesting start to say the least.

Highschool Boys 1-2: Funny and amusing. It really is a gintama-lite show. The best bits I thought was the Literary Girl scenes and the stick on the road scenes. They really had me laughing. Unfortunately I haven't quite had the fortune of many of these events back in highschool. Will keep watching for sure.

Bodacious Pirates 2: The show is starting to come together. Sailing space vessels and target practice against old ruined tanks is a start. The whole electronic warfare bit though was unintentionally amusing as always.

Natsume Shi 2: Not really the most engaging 2 episode arc for the series. I didn't really feel connected to the struggle this time. It just didn't have much impact and the necessary build up. I did like that Misuzu showed up a lot though. It's true that Natsume never calls for him even if he's in trouble. It's also good that the Book of Friends is actually being utilized again. In the third season it felt like it wasn't even a factor after the 3rd or so episode.

Nisemonogatari 2: Twister and Hnnngazawa. Kanbaru and Araragi's banter was amusing as it was in Bake. I like that Araragi is now a reformed pedo after being assaulted himself. I feel like I could of done with a few less male gaze shots but it's par for course.

Amagami++ 2: Sae was robbed I tell you! Miya and gang will be back next year. Didn't think that Hanazono guy was even going to be running after getting exposed. As expected Ayatsuji just kept it all in control and brushed off the obvious attempt at NTR in dat shed no less. What a place to do things in. Enjoyable two episode arc I guess. Junichi is going to be worst vice president.

Any way the next arc better be good AIC. :<

Rinne 2: Enjoyable. I feel like if Madoka remains an energetic and charming character I'll be able to enjoy this show barring retarded Guilty Crown-like developments. The colourfullness and nice back drops do help a lot. The OP is also addictive. Lovely Lovely~

Blood-C 8-12: Took the time to wrap it up tonight. I have been protected. Thank you Saya.

The writers of this crap should feel very Guilty 13:

This show is such a piece of shit, and what's sad is that it clearly has a big budget. I've no idea how this garbage could get this kind of funding; it's like this show was written as it went along, each episode by a different writer in a contest to see who could fuck up their episode the most, and each writer in succession is trying to screw over the writer of the next episode by writing them into deeper and deeper shit piles.

Still watching, if for no other reason to see just how this trainwreck all turns out.

3 episodes but in three hours I have to go to work and I need some sleep too but I will watch the other episodes now for the Queen of Karuta.

Another 2

Sakakibara seem like a true Rei fan, he can't stay away from our eye-patch girl. I can't blame him though, eye-patch girls are so good that even boring Asuka went and picked one to try and become as good as Rei is.
I'm still liking the adaption they're doing, the flow/pacing is a bit faster though. And I forgot to mention the other day in regard to episode 1, I'm happy Ali Project does the OP.

Aim for the Ace 4:
I can't tell who Hiromi wants more between Toudou and Ochofujin. Sharing rackets is serious business, apparently. I loved seeing her get to finally win a game. It was good to see her have some determination, even if it seems based entirely on whose racket she's borrowing. The match was full of some good drama, and the aiming for one point monologue was awesome.
