Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Jumpgate got released? I'll have to agree with you on WWIIOnline, loved that game.

I'll raise you Subspace/Continuum was one of the best online experiences ever. SWR for life.

Talking old school Jumpgate here. The hatred, sneaking between battles and stealing kills when people tried escaping etc. :D

Imo....

  • Raiden > Solid Snake
I have no idea why, I just prefer Raiden over Solid Snake.

  • The N64 Castlevania games are great!
Just listening to the soundtrack make me want to play those games again.

  • Super Mario Sunshine is on par with Mario 64.

  • Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within is the best out game of the second PoP trilogy

I'll build my next opinion off of this one, although it isn't targeted at you particularly: gamers who complain that there's nothing to play on any of the current consoles must have the attention span of gnats, running through games like they're squares of toilet paper. The idea of throughly playing 30 games thoroughly in one five or six-year generation (never mind 50 - wow!) is completely foreign to me; aside from school children with minimal homework and a free summer, or retirees, or those who are unemployed/shut-in, who has that kind of time?

Then there are the multi-platform-owning folks complaining.. what do you all do for a living to the point where you have such an incredible amount of free time for gaming?

This topic has always been a complete mystery to me, especially when I see the popularity of the backlog threads. Grown adults, presumably with 40-hr/week jobs and families, with this complaint? Incredible.

Well, I said I OWNED 50, not played them. My backlog is fucking huge at this point, and I doubt I'll touch quite a few of the games that sit on my shelf. I have a big problem browsing the used game shelves at gamestop and such looking for deals. When I see A Boy and His Blob just sitting there for 10 bucks I can't say no. : /

WoW Vanilla was one of the best games I have ever played.

KOTOR The Sith Lords.. After I finished it I felt really fucking pissed because the ending sucked. Then I searched it up online, found out what they did to the ending. Mind blown.

I really don't like Resident Evil, Dead Space, FEAR, or any horror game for that matter.

But that's probably because I'm a chicken.

OK then, let's double, hell screw it, let's triple the time it takes to play a game then, that's still around 5-6 hours a week. Less than an hour a day. That is far from excessive. He basically sounds suprised that people find the time to finish 5 games a year. I wonder if he actually games at all if less than an hour a day is excessive. Just sayin'.

He was also vastly understating the amount of good games there are across all of the consoles. If you own PS3/360/PC/wii/DS/PSP and you manage to play and complete every good game on them all you are doing very well. It would be near impossible to actually do this.

Then again i'm in the group of people who spend the vast majority of their time playing a handful of games each gen. I'd say each gen 4-5 games would take up 80-90% of my gaming time.

Final Fantasy was never good, let alone a great gaming series. IV and V were sorta enjoyable but the rest of the series is worth nothing to me. The games feature mostly broken, easily exploitable game systems and just amazingly unlikeable characters and bad storytelling
.

Wii U will be a huge mistake for Nintendo, and I think they honestly don't know what they are doing anymore. First they say waggle sticks are the next evolution of gaming, but now thats out the window and we get a crappy ipad thingy with a shitty, cheap resistive touchscreen.

What I hate is when people make the assumption that just because you play games several hours a week you can't be a good family man or hold a 40+ hours a week job if you own x amount of games. I am 30, married, and work 40+ hours a week and play at least 10-12 hours at minimum a week of games. I play more as time allows, and I have a huge backlog (primarily on PC due to Steam).

A couple key items for me:

When I first met my wife I had just had a string of women that I had been dating that were trying to change my being a gamer. I flat out told my wife that while she would come first I would always be a gamer, and that we shouldn't date if she couldn't accept that and not look down on it. Not only has she not tried to change me but has started playing games as well. If the person you are with wants to change you then in my opinion as long as your behavior isn't destructive your relationship is doomed from the start.

Both my wife and I have never been the going out a lot type. We would both rather stay in and read/play games/watch movies than go out to bars or whatever with friends. Now don't get me wrong, we do go out with friends, but its a rarity. This life style not only saves money, for me it allows more time to play games.

My wife and I have a relationship that we don't need to be around each other all the time. We can be in seperate rooms for several hours doing our own thing. We allow time during the days we don't work for each other to persue our hobbies.

So at the end of the day I guess my point is that you can be both a family man, and hold a great job along with being a hardcore gamer. Granted I don't have kids yet, but I have friends that do and still are able to juggle all of it. I have a large backlog due to not having as much time as I would like to play, but that doesn't and shouldn't have any bearing on the number of games I own?

I think Kane and Lynch 2 is the most stylish game ever made. Yes, even over DMC, Jet Set, etc. It captures dirt and sleaze so fucking well.

As retarded as making a broad sweeping generalisation with zero explanation? I think trying to use a device used for typing, and another used for navigating an OS as an input method for an FPS is retarded. It's like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole.

Controllers are the square peg. M+KB isn't even a peg, it's something else entirely. It blows my mind that people have trouble believing a purpose bullt device is better suited than a "make do and mend" solution, becuase that's what M+KB is, making do with what you have to hand.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 2nd generation of the FPS genre was built around M+KB and has been like that ever since? (Quake if I recall correctly). If anything the controller is the round peg and current FPS games had to be adapted to it with their auto-aim, sticky-aim, acceleration, and other assists.

I don't mind the controller though.

- Chrono Cross is better than Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy VI is the worst of the first 6 games
- Bioshock is pretentious nonsense
- Final Fantasy XII is easily the best game of the series

and

- Deadly Premonition is the best game of this console generation

:)

Bubsy and Bubsy 2 are a fun little pair of platformers for the Sega Genesis (Haven't played them on the SNES to compare though) and not just for all the various ways you can kill the bobcat (Though that's a perk as well). Shame the 'hard' difficulty for the second game can sometimes turn into a junior bullet hell.

Donkey Kong Country (The first one) is a pretty bland and unremarkable platformer. You romp through some of your standard platforming levels (Though some of the backgrounds to them are quite pretty) and the enemies lack any real character. Music isn't all that either...thankfully Donkey Kong Country 2 followed!

Donkey Kong Country 3 GBA's soundtrack is nowhere good as the SNES version (Sorry Wise, I love your other efforts though).

Final Fantasy 8 had a great story going for it, with the conflict between Seed and Sorceress Edea/Galbadia but once Ultimecia showed up, the story took a sharp nose dive.

Pokemon Platinum is the best entry of the series and the worst (Worst for this series is still pretty good) is Gold/Silver.

Vampire Savior is the greatest fighting game there is.

Rainbow Sex Vegas 2 was head and shoulders above most shooters of this generation, even if it didn't do its predecessors justice.

Far Cry 2

Apart from the horrible matchmaking this was a very good game that was misunderstood / misplayed by people expecting to be able to play this game like a Call of Duty game:

Respawning checkpoints - People seem to think that 5 min playing time represented 5 min in game time. Actually this was meant to represent closer to an hour in game and all the checkpoints had radios so it should be expected that they would restock fairly quickly.

You were not supposed to take out all the checkpoints anyway. The whole point of Farcry 2 was not to take on the whole of Africa single-handedly but to avoid troble as much as you could and just take out who you needed to take out.

Travel - Yeah, it may take a while to get to your mission but not a problem if you are collecting diamonds. Even if you are not collecting diamonds, there are bus stops in the centre and at each of the corners of the map and there is always a car at a bus stop so travelling could be drastically reduced. Sometimes the best way to get around was by boat but that wasn't always obvious.

Patrols - not a problem if you stay off the roads (which you were supposed to be doing anyway). For the times when you needed to travel on roads, you just made sure you are travelling in a car with a mounted gun and patrols became fun.

Stealth - I've seen people say that the stealth was broken in this game. No, not broken if you knew how to do it. You can snipe at someone and every one knows where you are, but if you disappear behind a hill and run out of sight 100 metres or so you can pop up and see everyone converging on where the shot came from making flanking easy. If you have left an IED where you fired your shot from you can have a lot of fun - especially if the grass catches on fire.

Repetitive Missions - Yeah, there wasn't much variety in missions but as you can approach them how you like this wasn't a problem for me. I loved to recce out a mission to decide what route I wanted to take and how I wanted to approach it. If I was getting board of sneeking as far as I could I'd switch to snipe-and-move or all-guns-blazing or soften the target with mortar first. Another thing I liked was the lack of checkpoints - all too often I've got away with dashing at an enemy and getting to a checkpoint in CoD; saving at safehouses stopped that in this game.

Exploding Weapons - Yeah, it was annoying to have a weapon blow up in your face...which is why you do the gun shop missions first and don't pick up weapons off the ground.

Malaria - Yeah, I'll give you that one.

There were some game-breaking glitches with this game but nobody complains about them. I'm convinced that the secret to enjoying Far Cry 2 was getting your head around the way it is supposed to be played, which is at a slower pace than most FPSs.

OK, I know I'm not gonna convince anyone who hated this game (and there are a lot!) but I do feel that the game really didn't deserve the hate it got.

Here's one: If you've played every Pokemon iteration since its conception and still find it to be a stimulating experience, you are probably an autist.

Thought of another one:

Achievements are one of the best ideas this gen. I feel like I've thoroughly "beat" more games this gen than any other. I enjoy having these side goals to complete during a game. It keeps me more engaged, if that makes any sense.

Now don't get me wrong, MP cheevos (like the ones in Halo 3) that rely on a certain amount of luck, should be banned. They can ruin online games. But I'm OK with the "Complete X amount of Games" type of MP cheevos.

Granted I don't have kids yet

And there it is. Until you have a kid, it's difficult to fully realize how much time & energy it takes raise one. (hint: it's a lot)

Tom hit the nail on the head there. Unless you're one of those whiney gamers (the type who use the lame term "dudebro" constantly) who hates this gen, it's also a mystery to me when people claim there's nothing to play. Like Tom, I also have no idea how grown adults have that much free time.

When you factor in a 40-50hr work-week, raising a kid (let alone multiple kids), a wife, a house that you own, and going to the gym, I can guarantee you the vast majority of Gamer-Dads (like myself) don't get to start gaming until the evening (around 10pm). Thus, as a Gamer-Dad, you get 1 maybe 2 hours of gaming per night on weeknights (if you want a good night's rest), and about 3-4hrs of gaming per night on the weekends. As a Gamer-Dad, you'll often find that you have to "make" time to game.

Now, Tom may be on the low-end of his games estimate there. But yeah, completing 5 to 6 games a year is about where I am. It could be more if I didn't play online, but it could also be less if I played the online mode of every game that has it.

-Theres absolutely NOTHING wrong in fixed camera angles and tank controls.

I don't know how you do it. This is probably my most knee-jerk, almost irrational pet peeve. Fixed angles in anything but a 2D game drives me insane. Parts of the game having preset camera angles doesn't bother me much, the entire game being presets makes me rage.

Rainbow Sex Vegas 2

Saving for posterity.

I cannot agree with this enough. One child is lots, two is madness (I'm told, and will swim those waters this year myself). The time that you have available instantly drops upon the arrival of the package, and will be limited going forward for awhile (different for each little one).

The original RE games were fun but their gameplay mechanics and design are average at best compared to RE4. Which from a mechanics and design standpoint is one of the best games ever made.

3D zeldas are inferior to 2D zeldas.

The N64 was a horrible console.

Dragon Quest Franchise > Final Fantasy Franchise.

Titan Quest is better than Diablo II.

Terraria is more fun than Minecraft.

I usually manage more than 20 hours a week of gaming with 45ish hours a week of work, but I just spent more than half a grand getting a 12 year old cat over an upper respiratory infection. I lost 7 pounds just from worrying and not eating. I couldn't really bring myself to play anything until I was confident she was getting better.

I used to think that if I ever had a kid I'd never be one of those parents who would be bringing their toddler to the emergency room every time they had a cold. Now I know better.

I'd be a fucking disaster and probably never play games again if I had kids. I don't know how you people manage.

Here are mines:

- except for MGS3, i cant understand how someone would find the whole Metal Gear Solid plot and storyline to be enjoyable and entertaining.

- PS3 controller > XBOX 360 controller.

- expansions totally ruined WoW. 40 men raids were the best thing about this game.

- Sonic games are overrated. Yes i include the first one.

- i cant stand Dark Souls even tho Demon's souls is one of my favorite game of all time.

- i dont understand what is all the fuss about Minecraft.

- i enjoy SWTOR and dont think its a WoW clone as much as people claim is.

Could you provide a list of some of the non first party games that you think are awesome/under-appreciated. I don't want to discuss the list, just want some good recommendations. I really love adventure games like Another Code. Do you have any recommendations there?

I don't play many adventure games/never played Another Code/Trace Memory, so I can't help there. I always meant to try it though; does it play anything like Hotel Dusk? Because that's one of my favorite games on the DS. Anyway, a short list of my favorite third party Wii games -

Little King's Story (best non-Nintendo game this gen. Seriously)
Klonoa
Zach and Wiki
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Muramasa
Trauma Center/Team
Kororinpa
Opoona

Most of those probably require a certain taste, but for the prices you can get them at now I have no problem recommending any of those. There's also a few excellent WiiWare games hidden underneath all the garbage as well

the Nintendo Wii is my favourite console ever. Not only the games from nintendo were stellar as usual but i actually enjoyed a lot of third party offerings, a lot of niche japanese games (thank you rising star games) and even some of those often called "test games". for the most part of this gen i've been a wii-only owner (i just got a 360 this christmas) and i own more than 100 games for the wii, more than 150 if you count wiiware and virtual console games.

*raises IMHO shield*

- alone in the dark inferno, clive barkers's jericho, wheelman, chaos legion and others are great games
-gta4, soul calibur 4 are s**t
-braid and limbo are overrated
-"pixel art" sometimes is a good excuse for making upscaled 320x240 games
-for me 3d platformers = aberration
-explorative platformer aka "platformer with huge labirintic level where you have to find a certain numer of things before reaching the exit( an example is superfrog for amiga ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> linear platformer aka left to right platformer (mario) ...
- ... infact when i was young the first time i tried super mario world i said "WTFITS?"
-how is it possible to kill the bubble bobble franchise in favor of puzzle bobble?
-I love capcom's arcade beat' em ups, i hate capcom for everything else(except chaos legion)

at the moment i don't remember other controversial opinions(i have a lot of them)

*runs away*

I've never heard this opinion before. Would love to hear your explanation.

Hey. Its probably that whole open world thing that doesnt work with me. I dont like the feeling of being totally lost and having not even the smallest clue where to go next. Thats why i think demon's souls worked perfectly for me. X number of levels with a central hub you can always go back to never gave me that same feeling i get from Dark Souls.

Some may say that it makes the game harder and thats why its better. Maybe they are right and i just suck at it. :)

Imo....

  • Raiden > Solid Snake
I have no idea why, I just prefer Raiden over Solid Snake.

That not an opinion it’s a mental condition

As for Farcry 2 I think it’s the near perfect example of how easy it is to ruin a game, games are not an easy thing to make and 1 or 2 wrong choices can cripple it.

Action RPG is not a genre. Calling your game an action rpg is not an excuse to have horrendous combat as well. Calling a game an "RPG" in general is probably incorrect too, RPG and it's derivatives are not really "genres".

Survival horror is not a genre either. All games are about survival and horror is an aesthetic in terms of games (not a genre). We don't call Red Dead Redemption a survival western.

A few of mine:

- I have never been able to get into the 3D Zelda games, the 2D ones are vastly superior. Link's Awakening is one of my favourite games ever and completely destroys Ocarina.

- 'Social' , 'Mobile' and 'Casual' are the three worst words in modern gaming.

- Spectrum > Commodore 64.

-Dragon Quest V on the DS is better than any modern RPG made by Square, Bioware, Bethesda or anyone else.

I like BethFallouts better than Interplay Fallouts. While the Bethesda games don't feel the same, atmospherically and story wise, I actually prefer them to the Interplay games which I felt had a lot of personality, but bland stories and worlds.

I've come to realize that I liked the control scheme of RE0,1,2,3,CV better than 4. I think it's just that I got so used to the tank controls that I got well adjusted to it, and taking away the jankiness in the more modern games with "better controls" took away some of the fear factor of slow turning, accidentally running into a hidden zombie, etc.

Survival Horror is a subgenre of Action-Adventure

Action-Adventure is a genre that combines Action and Adventure (duh). It usually takes the quick reflexes a physical challenges of an action game and mixes them with the item gathering, environmental interaction, and puzzle solving of adventure games. Now take an Action-Adventure game (like Red Dead Redemption) and add the layer of Survival Horror... Specifically, horrific enemies/situations and de-emphasized combat (those are the common markers of that subgenre). It works out, they aren't separate genres. Survival Horror is simply a method of refinement to the Action-Adventure game.
