Hanasaku Iroha 22:
Great episode. It would have been the cliched thing for something to go horribly wrong at the wedding, but instead it turned out well and had the right mix of emotions on display. I also liked getting some more insight into Ohana's mom (and her letter was hilarious), and just the development we needed with the love triangle stuff. I wish Ohana and Minchi would just drop all this pretense about Tohru and Ko and admit they want each other, though.

I'm glad that you survived the doldrums in the middle of this show, because the finale makes it all worth it.

It's alright. I think it does drag a bit at times, but apart from that I've got no complaints.

Not that I'd call it "my favourite anime of all time" - I couldn't say that about anything. I probably couldn't even do a top 30 (unordered).

Weakling.

1. Haibane Renmei
2. Mushishi
3. Whisper of the Heart
4. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
5. Spirited Away
6. Magnetic Rose from Memories (what?)
7. Bakeneko arc from Ayakashi (no really, what?)
8. My Neighbor Totoro
9. Trapeze
10. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
11. Baccano!
12. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
13. Kimagure Orange Road: I Want to Return to That Day
14. Millennium Actress
15. Cowboy Bebop
16. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
17. One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island
18. Mononoke
19. Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer
20. Paranoia Agent
21. Master Keaton
22. Kiki's Delivery Service
23. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (1993)
24. Dennou Coil
25. Gankutsuou
26. Gintama
27. Time of Eve
28. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
29. Wandering Son
30. Princess Mononoke

Admittedly the individual rankings are rough, but eh.

Anne of Green Gables 40
Recognizably the same person, but what a difference! The designs for all the younger characters have received steady changes as they've grown older, but Anne's has clearly received the most attention. Which, since she's the protagonist, is as it should be. Never have I seen a better visual depiction of the process of maturing, both physically and mentally.

Then again, how often is an anime so interested in showing characters grow and change over time? That level of character development is uniquely simple with animation (you don't need to artificially age live actors) but you don't see it that often. Instead you'll see 'current age character' and occasional flashbacks to 'child age character'.

There's a level of thought and consideration put into all these things which help to separate Anne of Green Gables from the crowd, even if it's mostly just in the writing.

I'd like to think movies should be separate from TV series because of the natural expectation of better production values and a shorter more compact format.

I thought people might object to me selecting only one part of an anthology film, but Magnetic Rose is so obviously on another level from the other two parts of Memories that I couldn't help it.
It may be an 'anthology' but it's three different films by three different directors, so separating them makes sense.

Jeez, I don't know if I could even settle on a top 5. Let's see:

1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
2. One Piece
3. Dragonball Z
4. Sexy Commando
5. Dead Leaves

Something like that I guess and even those are iffy.

Weakling.

1. Haibane Renmei
2. Mushishi
3. Whisper of the Heart
4. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
5. Spirited Away

12. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
13. Kimagure Orange Road: I Want to Return to That Day
14. Millennium Actress
15. Cowboy Bebop
16. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
17. One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island
18. Mononoke
19. Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer
20. Paranoia Agent
21. Master Keaton
22. Kiki's Delivery Service
23. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (1993)
24. Dennou Coil
25. Gankutsuou
26. Gintama
27. Time of Eve
28. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
29. Wandering Son
30. Princess Mononoke

Admittedly the individual rankings are rough, but eh.

I don't really like ranking anime per se, but I do have several anime I consider to be in my pantheon of champions:

Cowboy Bebop
Spirited Away
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Laputa
Haibane Renmei
Monster
Princess Mononoke

No particular order. Of course there's a lot of other anime I consider to be on the next level down, but still great anime. Escaflowne, Baccano, Usagi Drop, etc.

The novel is deceptively ambitious in that regard. It's just a series of ordinary, seemingly unremarkable events in a girl's life, but by the time you reach the end you realize it has a relatively large scope in how it treats the process of growing up.

30. Tweeny Witches

I left a lot of HNNNNG off this list so it could change on a whim.

I couldn't even do a top 10 to save my life. I'm indecisive enough as is without having to take the stuff I really like and try to come up with some vague criteria for determining what shows are slightly better or worse than everything else.

Instead I'll just call Azumanga Daioh the best anime ever and leave it at that!

Do you even have to ask?

I prefer the live action version.

Also I would rank Ai yori Aoshi somewhere up there as a sentimental favorite, but goddamn I have to put something in the top 30. Its so difficult.

I think Bakemonogatari would probably make my top ten!

If you combined sequels or something, maybe.

I guess everything I've given a 10 or a 9 almost neatly fits into a top 30. If I was absolutely pressed to knock one out to make it even it would probably be Leave it to Kero-chan, unfortunately : (

Also Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu S1 would break my top 30 easily and damnit why don't you all watch this show already it's awesome. It's what Ika Musume and Keroro Gunsou wish they could be.

You gave both seasons of Code Geass a perfect 10...

Anime rankings/ratings on My Anime List and Anime News Network have taught me that Sturgeon's law applies to anime fans too. Stop this world, I want off.
