Ape Escape still holds up.

Ape Escape was one of my favourite PSX game : non-linear platform goodness, goofy and fun characters, good music, great graphics, good voice acting, memorable control scheme (it was brillant, using the net for capturing Apes) AND a good lenth. The apes were good collect-a-thon.

I also remember the game was bug-free. Literally, 0 bugs. I tried to break the game / glitch it so much, and I've never succeded.


I also have the second and the third one on my backlog, I played a little bit the 2 but I preferred to begin the third one.
 
Nice to know that it still holds up, I have fond memories of playing AE1 for hours on end. Might pop it in for a little while today, if I can find my copy that is.

From what I remember, it was just fun in almost every aspect. Beautiful to look at, good music, and catching the monkeys was always really satisfying.
 
Which one had the monkey football? I seem to remember it being on PS2 and me and my mate playing the shit out of the demo game just to play the football mini game! never got a chance to actually try out the proper game unfortunately.
 
One of my favorite series ever....they really need to make a full on sequel on PS3 where it DOESNT require Move to play. I mean cmon...the original game was made for the Dualshock controller.

There was talk at one point (on the Ape Escape twitter account) of bringing Million Monkeys stateside but that never happened.

If they were to release an Ape Escape HD Collection on PS3 with trophies (with Ape Escape, part 2, and part 3) id be all over that day one!!!

I see why they made it for the move though, Ape Escape introduced the DS2, they probably figured it would introduce the Move controller too.
 
One of my all time favorites. The look on a monkeys face and that scuffle animation when they try to get away gets me all :D.

I hope Sony finally puts it out on PSN Classics now that the Vita is here!
 
One of my favorite games. It was actually one of the first games that I bought along with the PS1.

I remember the game having Stan, Kenny, Kyle, and Cratman monkeys. :lol

I'm too lazy to go over to my shelf and try it out, but I think you just use the face button and analog (so press and hold + move analog). you couldn't do things like run alongside your RC car.


edit: ok, maybe not that lazy. I briefly popped it in and it's a mix of mashing buttons and modifiers. It's a lot like Zelda item selection. X is jump, you bind items to the other 3.

RC Car is controls are on the d-pad (which is normally the camera).
the propeller and hulahoop are mash the button
baton is press to slash, hold and move analog to spin
sling shot locks you in place

it works, just not as well.

edit 2: doesn't seem to be a way to do a horizontal net attack without crouching
 
It's not just that it's still fun, but it really does 'hold up'. With a graphics recoating it could be a modern game.

Me want a new Ape Escape, Jumping Flash, Wing Commander, Tie Fighter, OH GOD WHY U DO THIS GAMING
 
I caved in and bought the disc version since they never released it on NA PSN. Also, I've never played 2 and 3, but going by this thread I can assume they're worth it, right?

But we did. Our standards improve. It's not a matter of the technology getting better, but the design. A lot of games from back in the era might have been amazing fun at the time because they did something you'd never seen before or perhaps it was one of the few games you had so you played it obsessively or maybe you were just so young everything was fun to you.

It happens with all things - games, movies, music and literature.

Sometimes I revisit old games I adored as a kid only to find out they are terrible by my more refined standards. Othertimes, I find they only improve with age.
 
Looking back at it, we actually got more of the Ape Escape games than I thought we did. This is the wall of shame:

Absolutely adored the original Ape Escape on the PS1. Very charming and unique.

So, is the original the only good game in the series? I know the PSP ones are average, but how are the PS2 games?

I never played Ape Escape 2, but 3 is great.

It's a shame the western Ape Escape fandom seems completely batshit insane.
 
I never played the first, but I loved 2 and 3. Really solid platformers, great artstyle and genuinely funny. You can tell the devs had fun with all those little scenes you walk in on.

Say whaaat? Oh man you have to play 1 from a purest stand point its a better game.
 
One of my absolute favorite games on PS2, wish they would release a proper sequel (not the crappy Move mini-game collection).

I was honestly hoping they would make a decent game and use Ape Escape (like they did with the DS2) to show the gameplay possibilities it offered. Instead we got a party game. Yay...
 
This thread is going to make me dust all 3 off and play them again. I'm never going to get to my back log if I keep replaying games I already finished. I would buy a new entry in a second, I would probably even get a Vita to play it if need be.
 
I never played any of the other ones but Ape Escape was by far one of my favorite Playstation games, really loved the dual analog use and the mini games were a blast.
 
More than anything this gen, I want a full-fledged sequel to Ape Escape.

Plenty of modern day potential with some of those older Sony franchises. Jumping Flash is another IP that hurts to see neglected like that.
 
Surprisingly great game. I don't like most 3D collect-a-thons on the basis of being conditioned to platformers where you can get back into challenging situations and action all the time, but this game gave me enough to think about with the various uses for the dual-sticks and different items. What pissed me off the most was the sheer amount of monkeys you couldn't capture early on, simply because you needed the flying-type device to get to them. I never thought that kind of teasing really worked at all, because you get that item at least halfway through the game, or even more than that!

Audiovisuals are spectacular for their age, but spider-webbing and some more creative variance in some of the musical tracks holds it back a bit. I need to go and play AE3 sometime in the future. Jumping Flash needs a modern remake, working on all of the principles it relied on in the past, coupled with creative new content and crazy level design. The developers of Jumping Flash did amazing things with their games, even on the Sharp X680000 of all things!
 
I played Ape Escape 2 to completion about a year or two ago. I was surprised how well that game still held up. I haven't played the original in a damn long time, but that game was awesome when it came out.
 
I fondly remember playing the demo of the first game on one of those old discs that used to come with Official PlayStation Magazine. Blew me away when I had to start using not just one, but both analog sticks. Charming game.
 
Just beat it.

One thing I liked was the length. It wasn't too short, but it didn't overstay it's welcome either.

I plated Sly Cooper 2 before this and that went about 2.5 levels too long.
 
Ape Escape 2 is best game in the series imo but Million Monkyes and 3 were also great too,even Ape Quest was brilliant.

Great series, shame it's owned by the shitty SCE Japan Studio.

I just started playing part 2.

It's easy to forget just how a big a leap PS2 was in audio/visuals over the PS1.

Still a fun formula so far. Actual bosses are pretty cool. The Pokemon cast is kind of weird though,

I see Ubisoft published it. Was Sony really going to just leave this to rot in Japan? I guess the lack of PS3 rendition kind of answers that.
 
Ape Escape is what sold my mother and I on a PS1 when a neighbour invited us for dinner and I played it with his son. So much fun. Never played any other besides the original, but that game sold me on the PS1.
 
Still the only version of "Ape Escape" I've played is that bonus mode added in Metal Gear Solid 3. :( Had a lot of fun with it though, I could see myself playing this if I got the chance.
