My dad was a district manager for K-Mart in the 80s and early 90s so I got lots of big sets from Lego reps sent to me. That was one of them. I never took that one apart after building it. It is the only Lego set I ever did that with. Sadly, it is now the one set I cannot find. I think my nephews took it or it is buried in a box somewhere. I was able to snag most of the rest of my stuff, but am missing many base plates due to nephews and nieces pillaging my rubbermaid containers for years at my mother's house.
Wanted to do some Legos, so went out to the garage and pulled out a Dino Attack set I had. It is a Helicopter vs. a T-Rex. And as a bonus, the little cart vs. the raptor was inside the big box. Threw that together really quick. Going to do the helicopter one when I have the chance this week. Saw one of my good knight sets while I was out there. Might do that next.

So tempted to get that for "my daughter", her initials are VW...she is only 2 and a half though...
to be fair, it is a fairly complex build - lots of building blocks on the sides to acheive a less studded look which I really like (the modular buildings do the same), and lots of very small pieces. And the instructions can be a bit vague.
'here are the pieces you need for this stage.' - ok
'here is a line showing where to put one of the pieces' - ok, got it.
'here is a picture of the model with the rest of the pieces attached. Figure out where we hid them' - er...
Old Lego instruction were basically all of the third option so I'm pretty used to it. Only thing that is more complicated now are all the shades. Having a set with multiple greys can be an annoyance since the printing tends to be a different shade from the brick.
What they have certainly improved on if placing the technic stick 1:1 ruler on every page that needs it. Used to have to flick to the front every time you wanted to compare stick lengths.
The deluxe Batmobile was a tricky build since 99% of the pieces were black and the printing was pretty dark.

It's worth the price tag - it's such an awesome display. Many non-LEGO people see it and don't believe it's LEGO from afar.
And regarding new instructions - I agree that they're much easier to follow. The instructions for the LEGO Dragon were pretty difficult (and the jaw was VERY annoying). One of the hardest models I've ever assembled, but incredibly rewarding when complete.
this set (VW) has a few of those - a page only using dark grey or black, giving you nothing to compare against to understand which is which.
It also has 'shiny' studs, which they indicate in the instructions with a tiny 'sparkle' graphic overlaid on the piece. Sometimes you can hardly see it, and so its easy to mix up with a plain grey stud.

Finally finished the SSD. Such an awesome piece, have it my bedroom. Was almost tempted to hunt down a UC ISD as well but trying to restrain myself with that price it goes for now lol

So i don't collect anything really. I even sell my games when I am done. However, I realized with my 4 lego Star Wars sets it looks like I am going to be collecting legos soon enough (I save every box).

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of Legos if there's step-by-step instructions telling you how to build something? I'm actually surprised Tested is building Lego kits. They seem like the type of people who would stress the idea of building structures solely from the imagination, especially hipster Norm.

Nah, not at all. There's no wrong way to LEGO. That's what makes them so special.
My daughter and I are playing by the book right now, but I have grand plans once we accumulate enough Castle-themed pieces...

At about 50 inches long and over 8 pounds, it's definitely a display piece. The center portion lifts up to reveal a tiny bridge interior for the figures to be in, though really you can't fit the figures inside it standing up and close the the bridge back up, you have to pretty much lay them down inside to close the model up. Had it on the counter for a few days till I figured out where the heck I was gonna keep it on display in the house hehe.

my son builds his own stuff, i like following instructions. Each to their own. And the sets give you good ideas of how to do different things, so can be a spur to do your own stuff.
The VW camper (I just finished - is awesome) shows some nice ways to do SNOT building. I tried to read up on it but couldn't twist my brain around it.
That sounds like something I would participate in.

I have lots of Lego sets, unfortunately all of them are now messed up and stored together in big boxes according to colors.
Built Taj Mahal two years ago, then I sold it for the price I bought it, was going to hit my head on the wall after noticing how much it goes for now.
I'm moving to Berlin this week, they have a huge Lego store on the main shopping street. Some great pieces: Tower Bridge for 229EUR, Executor for 399EUR and Death Star for 449EUR. Tempted with Tower Bridge or the Executor.

Not sure if it was in this thread or just an off chance that I found some sites that have custom hardsuits that people make out of random pieces, so I thought I would have a go with what I had:
I think its cool, but the main problem I have when it comes to Lego is that if I'm not building by the manual, I'm never satisfied with the end product. Also made a Blacktron-ish Mad Max kinda guy with a robot arm minifigure to go with it (I love Blacktron, in case you couldnt tell by the colour schemes)

I bought a lot of castle legos back then, but haven't bought any since the early '00s, one or two of the Knights Kingdom sets... I do still have my castle lego stuff set up, though -- mostly stuff from the Crusaders/Black Falcons through the Dragon Masters and Royal Knights. Most of the stuff I had was military, but I did have the Town Wall Tavern (aka Guarded Inn), which was really cool; sadly, it's one of the castle lego sets I couldn't manage to put back together again (I'd used the parts in other stuff I'd built, I assume?), so I don't have it assembled.
I just ordered another Flagship. Hopefully this was not a stock error on the part of LEGO, because they are currently going for $100 more than this on ebay.

Last year I was determined to rebuild the 1984 King's Castle (my favorite set as a kid), but I had lost quite a few pieces over the years. I used peeron.com to get the parts list, and then ordered the missing pieces through BrickLink. It ended up being much cheaper than going through eBay.

I always loved the elaborate display landscapes they had in Lego catalogs. You know what I'm talking about? They weren't actually made from Lego pieces, but were a background to display all the various sets as if it was all one big kingdom (in case of the Castle sets) or a city.

Sorry my fellow LEGO lovers, but the Megablocks 'Need For Speed' range has got LEGO whipped for sexy car models. Lots of custom pieces but the end result looks great. Makes me wish LEGO would make a range of model sports cars.
