As far as art design goes it is very consistent, very rarely does the game just throw a whole new area into and when it does it takes great care to spread them out so it's believable that the natives of each area would be different from dress to even how far along they are advanced when it comes to amount of tech going on in each location.

As far as the summon thing goes that happens because they added the boost system, maybe not the greatest but it was an interesting take on trying to give a way to make the summons stay poweful and strong enough so you didn't reach a certain point and just say fuck it and switch to physical/magical attacks.

Does VIII have it's issues? Without doubt. Is it a fact that it's the worst game in the series? No don't try throwing your opinions around as facts.

Like today I preordered FF13-2. After 13, which admittedly I knew would suck before I played it, and the reviews for 13-2 saying the story is downright embarrassing I should have no business buying it but there I was at gamestop this morning...

Then again I've actually enjoyed several of the main games, even if they all were 10+ years ago.

This probably isn't that controversial anymore, but some of the standard gaming settings are almost killing gaming for me. ESPECIALLY medieval fantasy. I am unable to articulate how tired this is at this point. I am so, so sick of elves and giant swords and those fucking names and crowns and chosen ones. If I had to power to will this stuff out of gaming for the rest of time I genuinely would.

I generally prefer Japan's psychedelic approach, but then those characters make me want to headbutt myself 100 times in a row. I'd sooner suffer through the swords and elves. Modern military stuff is just bland and driven by aimless testosterone, but that's definitely not a controversial view. Sci-fi I can usually deal with because there seems to be a lot more range with what can be done with it.

I'm interesting in playing Kingdoms of Whatever Reckoning, but I wish there was a 'I don't care about your arbitrary lore, please skip all of it' option(I'm assuming there's not; cool surprise if I'm wrong!).

Good news is that the increasingly-important indie gaming community is above this nonsense and is great about making original settings.


And incidentally, to repeat one of my most consistent hitters: Bioshock 2 is better than the original in nearly every way, and is one of the best games of the generation.
 
The first 2/3 of this generation of gaming pales in comparison to the last generation of gaming.

This is what I mean though. As busted as Big Rigs? That's a ridiculous, objectively wrong statement. Big Rigs has physics that are virtually non-existent, a track that does not work, no AI, "YOU'RE WINNER !", and more issues I'm not listing. In contrast FFVIII is generally bug free and the story is largely coherent even if it does get pretty damn stupid at times, but this really isn't that out of line compared to other JRPGs anyway. I'm not saying it's wrong to not like it, but it's insane how it's treated as one of the Worst Games Ever when it's mainly just poor aging, ideas that didn't quite work out, balance that can be somewhat screwy (but easily broken in your favor, which is vastly preferable to the alternative), and the already covered story issues. I can't even call it the worst Final Fantasy, II is the champion there and even ignoring the NES games I disliked XIII's direction way more, not to mention the whole
killing everyone to get your god's attention
is almost as stupid as Time Kompression anyway.

A variation on that earlier opinion: I think it'd be worth it if everyone who took games seriously to spend serious time with a really, really awful one just to gain perspective. Or at least read up into them or play a demo, just to better recognize the difference between a game you don't like (or even hate) and an objectively broken game.

Sorry, meant the crystal chronicle games. They were by far the most fun i had with the series. Specially when played with friends. And no I didn't like VI at all.

Get rid of Orcs in WRPGs. I'm not sure why everyone has to take Tolkein's creatures that he created and incorporate them into their universe. Orcs are boring, generic goblinoid creatures that quite frankly, I'm sick to the verge of vomiting on seeing. You don't see sci-fi games take Roddenberry's or Lucas' aliens and incorporating them into their universe, do you? Nope, no Klingons or Hutt in Mass Effect. Please, get rid of Orcs and try something original in a fantasy setting for a change! JRPGs do it!

FF VIII is my favorite game of all time. I will definitely admit it is broken as fuck though.

Sure, they may be similar in certain ways, but they don't look or have the same name. Other than Michael Dorn as one of their kin, they're pretty much any "warrior" race throughout a lot of space opera fiction. Orcs, on the other hand, are directly ripped off in name and appearance from Tolkein so much his estate should be receiving shares from Wizard's of the Coast (TSR), Blizzard, etc.

We should be BFFs, haha. I totally agree. People knock Japan for having ridiculous character designs and worlds--and a fetish for belts--but at least they're trying. I especially love when a dev like, say, BioWare claims that they're totally creating a new universe, in this case with Dragon Age. How does it differ from Tolkien high fantasy? Dude, this is low fantasy! It'd dark! How? Elves are not trusted by other races! Magic is looked down on as dangerous! Edgy. Anything else really different? Setting, time period? Naw, bro.

And this is coming from someone who thinks that BioWare takes way more shit than they deserve. They're really just one example.
 
1. The casual and phone-based games industry (I'm looking at you, Tiny Tower and Farmville) is a scourge that atrophies your fun center, and slowly but surely sours you to gaming as a whole.

2. Nostalgia is 99% of what makes retro-gaming / classic gaming seem any good.

3. Bungie's next Marathon game will have a higher Metascore than Halo 4

Games in general have in no way lived up to the potential the medium presents us. I consider video games to be a more powerful medium than film, but as of current, it feels like the film mechanic has been explored almost entirely whereas the game mechanic has no where near been touched - and it's not that we need to wait for the technology to get better or that it's a comparatively new medium (although I will admit that's part of it) but that the industry is far too safe. The medium should not be populated with 90% action games. Just because the medium presents choice, skill and reflex to us does not mean action is all it can do.

On top of this, stories in video games have the potential to be far more resonant than films because we as an audience are active in them. It's a pity this aspect of games has been brutally underlooked and underdeveloped. If a scriptwriter on the caliber of some film scriptwriters was writing for games, understood the medium, and tied it into gameplay and choice, video games could be hugely emotional.

Because Symphony of the Night was the best Super Metroid imitator for years (ever still I'd say, unless you count Metroid Prime loosely), and we had a surge of those games starting with the GBA. We have about as many Metroid-style Castlevania games as we have Metroid games.

And, SoTN aside, I gotta second that. SoTN's my favorite Castlevania, but AFTER that I had way more fun with I, IV, and Rondo of Blood than any Metroid-style game but Aria of Sorrow, and that largely took me by surprise after being disappointed by Harmony of Dissonance. Then there's Lords of Shadow, but that's another controversial opinion altogether.

I'm curious how you'd rationalize that. I could say the same exact thing about GameStop, and I'd point to the fact they're the most reliable brick & mortar store for niche games and that while in the short term their used games business is kind of scummy, in the long run it's a great way to get games you missed out on without scouring a flea market (and REALLY hoping you get lucky) or going online and hoping you land a good deal.
 
2D Sonic is better than Mario (2D or otherwise). In fact I'd say the only game that comes close to Sonic 3 & Knuckles as best platformer is Yoshi's Island (because it's sheer genius), but that's not really a Mario game so lol.

In fact I tend to think a lot of criticism of Sonic boils down to "lol load screens furries SONIC GAMES WERE NEVER REALLY ANY GOOD OKAY *fart*"

Less controversial: Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite in the series, but that's a personal thing.

Much more controversial: KH > FF

3>/=2=1 kind of guy. 1,2,3 are all pretty good and really I don't I can say is better then the other because I enjoy all 3 a great deal. That said, 3 is probably the best one.

TTS is ok. It's not as good as 1, but it's ok. That said the arguments against it are all correct.

PW is awful. 4 is also awful.
 
Yea, I'm not sure why people like MGS3 so much and think it was one of the best. All the characters were poor (really not a fan of any of them), the new mechanics were lame and too many of them and the story was good, but not memorable. I've only played it once however, maybe I'll give it another go w/ the HD collection.

If you played the original version and not Subsistence, well, Subsistence would help a lot thanks to the new camera. Kind of ironic though that it's the kind of camera they needed for a dual stick game, only to use it AGAIN for a one stick system (Portable Ops). For myself, it felt like I finally had a Metal Gear Solid that felt like a fully, meaty GAME, and it was a pretty entertaining story even though, yeah, it IS a Metal Gear story. But even then it's probably one of the more down to Earth ones, and while I can find that boring (Peace Walker is not a MGS I'd play for story! Though half of that is MGS4's fault) it also had some of my favorite characterization in the series too.
