Darn, should made it an hour long episode, having to wait seven more days to see the strategy come to fruition is gonna be hard. Otherwise fun episode
shocked that the president is loaded and already knew Marika is a captain candidate, and Lynn is some super hacker. Animations for computer systems are nice and the high powerscanner too
Space Runaway Ideon 23:
The first half of this episode was pretty slow, but things picked up in the second half with some interesting plot developments; particularly with regard to the different factions in the Buff Clan, which has some good potential. Cosmo also got some good character development towards the end of the episode. It's just a shame all of the fights in this show are so dull.
Funimation were made to cancel their Blu Ray release of the second series as it was too close to the Japanese release and the licensors were worried about reverse importation.
Well this show continues to reach new heights of loli fan service. I'm almost afraid to see what the BD version of this episode will be like. At the very least I'm sure they'll add some more shots of Karen writhing around.
This is a glacially slow and extraordinarily boring show. I thought that the latter half of episode two with its interminable
sitting in chairs vocalizing what's happening on a computer screen
was torture enough, but we've gotten two more episodes comprised primarily of this.
My main complaint thus far has been that the whole pirate thing is taking far too long to get going, but that might not even matter anymore. If these episodes are supposed to give us a taste of
Marika's future pirate crew
, there's a good chance that this
electronic warfare
shit is going to carry over to the Bentenmaru as well. After all, it's much cheaper to animate talking heads than spaceships, so it's the perfect thing to pad out space battles.
I was expecting the ratio of comedy to srs space stuff in Mouretsu Priates to be skewed much further toward comedy than it actually has been, which is unfortunate because the more lighthearted first episode shined more than any episode hence. The show's forte is obviously not action, and I fear that Mouretsu Pirates' ineptitude in this area is only going to snowball once actual space battles in all their ugly CG horror are introduced alongside the kinds of "warfare" we've seen thus far. I blame everything on the removal of "Miniskirt" from the title.
Symphogear 04:
More action, less yuri, one especially blatant fanservice shot, and a
training arc
that they had the good sense to relegate to the
end credits
. Still, all of Hibiki's accomplishments
don't mean so much when you already know that she dies at the end. And they need to stop taunting me with flashbacks to amazing GAR Kanade ;_;
I was actually wondering about this...
Do you think the reception in here would be different if the title (and thus expectations?) had never been changed to "Bodacious"?
Personally, I am loving the show anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me.
It is incredibly boring, but I still look forward to it every week for some odd reason. Maybe because Marika is cute, or because the two pirates are kinda fun, or because I dig the mechanical designs. I honestly don't know. I'd like to think the show still has potential, though.
Ashita no Joe 4:
Brutal stuff. I don't know how it would be possible to watch this episode and not feel something, from the intensity of those punches (you could really tell just how much they hurt), to the emotions of the characters, to every element of the setting and how the characters are affected by poverty. There's a real grit to this series that you don't see very often. The visuals executed the intensity well, and the music really elevated certain scenes.
The only reason I watch Morestu Space Pirates is because I pine to hear Chiaki Omigawa's voice on a weekly basis until the next Hidamari season happens.
You know, I remember watching some episodes of this a long time ago but for the life of me I can't remember absolutely anything about it other than it being kinda ugly and rather tedious to watch. So uh, hope that helps?

I think that both "Miniskirt" and "Bodacious" imply some level of comedy and absurdity, it's just that "Miniskirt" might have given the wrong idea about the level of fanservice in the show and so it was changed so as not to mislead. It probably referred to nothing more than the fact that the pirate crew was a bunch of seifuku-wearing teenagers. I was actually kidding about blaming the title change for anything real, but I'll admit to pinning some of my expectations for the show solely on the "bodacious". Literal titles should generally strive for accuracy!
Does anyone with a working knowledge of Japanese even know if "bodacious" is a good translation for "mouretsu" anyway?
Inu x Boku SS 3
All that angst, and I just don't care one bit about it.
I mean, the first half was decent till it ran smack into angst and lost me completely.
I kinda wish they were using all those supernatural powers a bit more instead of running on the angst train. But, at least I guess there's new characters next episode.

Marika is indeed pretty cute and a reasonably likeable and intelligent character, she's just trapped in a slow slooooooow sloooooooooooooooow show. Everything can easily turn around and be enjoyable enough if they'd just wrap this storyline up, get on with the space pirating, and ensure that the pacing doesn't drag again, I just don't know how likely that is.

Yeah, it's very slow, and extremely heavy on exposition (which actually makes sense in context, but it's still boring). I don't think the show did itself any favors with it's slow start, but Horizon made the same mistake (well, more confusing than slow) and still ended up as one of my favorite shows last season.
It's Star Trek: TNG, where the characters technobabble at each other because the writers are under the mistaken impression that people care about how computers work in this fictional universe.
Yet, I'm sticking around because of the soundtrack. Figures.
After watching the episode, that's one of the reasons why I find her trolling/word play with Araragi interesting. It's much more textured than the simple sub/dom relationship that he has with 'gahara or the extremely flirtatious relationship he has with monkey paw girl.
Arjuna 7
Liked this ep. Second half was probably the most visually interesting episode to date too.
Glass Fleet 7
Nice to see Michel's backstory. I wish I knew if Gonzo was playing this straight or embracing the camp at times. Seeing Michel's father die evoked thoughts of overacting.
Melody of Oblivion 6
This is the highlight of this episode.
It's a reminder that the show could have been interesting if they executed the more ethereal qualities properly. Instead the most memorable part is shooting a toy mouse.
Yami 4
Imagine if 'Gargantua' was today's secret word.
And the power of love saves the day once again! Yippie!
These OVAs were better than the TV series, but only marginally. It still suffered the same crippling flaws despite the new coat of paint. Shiny or not, I would still consider it below average.
Anyway, I am excited to start Lost Canvas since I expect it to have actual battle animation and not just people doing poses while the background changes. The OP alone looks epic.
Hanasaku Iroha 25:
Amazing. When Nako finally spoke up, everything changed. That was a powerful scene which hit every note needed, and even managed to seamlessly flow into some light comedy after the seriousness. All the characters were on top form, and Ohana got some very good development. It was a moving episode which I would have been fine as even if it were the finale. The Hanasaku Iroha that I love.
Also, Minchi finally admits her feelings for Ohana.

I'm definitely sticking with Mouretsu Pirates for the time being in hopes it corrects itself. I can forgive slow starts, this one is just especially bad because it's compounded by a lack of action and meaningful character interaction. If it wasn't necessary for the characters to explain every single action they're taking with Odessa II's computers, the last two episodes could have been condensed into ten minutes. The show wrote itself into a plotline that's difficult to visually depict and these are the consequences.

I was actually going to make a Star Trek comparison but I was afraid of offending any fans I'm a Star Trek fan myself, but the last two episodes of Mouretsu were strikingly similar to the scenes that occur during any given warp core breach, transporter malfunction, or other tense event that relies entirely on tapping buttons on a computer panel for its resolution. Mouretsu simply has the problem of making entire episodes out of these scenes, whereas they tend only to be the climax of the week's plotline in Trek.

Yeah. Out of all the girls in the harem, Hanekawa has the most interesting relationship with Araragi. It's the most platonic and so they can interact in a refreshing way that isn't laced with sexual tension, whereas his conversations with Hitagi, Suruga, Mayoi, and Nadeko are all flirtatious to varying degrees. She's still a great character in Nise,
Finished watching this and I also liked the way it ended. I didn't think it would work too well but I was surprised as I felt satisfied enough with the last episode, though I also want a follow up.
This is the first time during this season's run that I've felt they've wasted way too much time showing us skin rather than actually advancing the storyline. At this point I'm pretty interested in finding out what's gonna happen next dammit. I don't wanna spend half an episode staring at a loli's ass instead.
If this whole
Araragi and Shinobu
bonding moment absolutely had to be done it could've been handled way more succintly but instead it just felt like it dragged on forever. But hey, I bet those BDs are going to sell like gangbusters.
Nisemonogatari ep4
Maaya Sakamoto's cutesy old fashion talking is kinda weird to me since I never see here VA this kind of role before.
In the end this episode is beating around the bush. Which I can see why it isn't as good as Bakemonogatari because the first show gets to the point due to multiple arcs whereas Nise got only 2 arcs.

To be fair, TNG had episodes devoted to the same crap. It's the horrible Brannon Braga plots of old, where there's some runaway technology and people have to use exposition to solve the problem while typing nonsense onto a fake keyboard.
Of course, that's the problem with science fiction writers who are enamored with the technology instead of the human beings using the technology. Imagine a similar show set in the US Navy where all people do is talk about turning knobs on their consoles. Yuck.

Heh, I actually didn't recognize her when I first saw her. I do think it's an interesting triangle, because of where she fits into it. She somehow manages to hold all the cards, even if she seems disinterested at best.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 4-7
Oh hey, it's that bondage OP.
Besides that, still enjoyable. A million and one little references everywhere and the show just gives back memories of the manga.

I don't really see how they can stretch this out to 74 episodes. If I'm not enjoying it yet, GAF, is the show just not for me? Or has the show just not hit its stride yet?
