Winter 2012 Anime Thread of Roundcats Up in This

To be fair, TNG had episodes devoted to the same crap. It's the horrible Brannon Braga plots of old, where there's some runaway technology and people have to use exposition to solve the problem while typing nonsense onto a fake keyboard.

Of course, that's the problem with science fiction writers who are enamored with the technology instead of the human beings using the technology. Imagine a similar show set in the US Navy where all people do is talk about turning knobs on their consoles. Yuck.

Heh, I actually didn't recognize her when I first saw her. I do think it's an interesting triangle, because of where she fits into it. She somehow manages to hold all the cards, even if she seems disinterested at best.

You're right about TNG not being immune to entire episodes of that sort of thing, though I haven't watched much since my teenage years so my memory is beginning to dull on the specifics. I think that Mouretsu is still far more about its characters than its technology; the writers obviously think that this interminable blow-by-blow of the
electronic attack on the Odessa II
is far more gripping than it actually is, but I know that this plotline is also attempting to serve the dual purpose of developing Marika's leadership skills. Ultimately it's a really roundabout way of achieving some basic characterization that serves the convenient dual purpose of filling time.

re: Hanekawa, I knew that the
hair
was going bye-bye but I had no idea about the
glasses
. It's amazing how much less distinctive she is; if she wasn't in her school clothing she could have passed for a random friend of Karen's. If you've seen the bonus episodes of Tsubasa Cat, I don't know what to say about her "disinterest".
She obviously loved Araragi at that time, but the end of that arc resulted in her agreeing to cease pursuing him rather than her actual feelings for him dying out, I think.
In this episode of Nise, there's a wistfulness about her body language in Koyomi's room. Of course, that's heavily open to interpretation, but it's easy to imagine her
feeling sadness at the fact that she'll only ever be there as a friend, nothing more.

But what about bad shows that have good OPs?!

A bad OP is a sign of laziness or incompetence that will likely carry over into the rest of the show, but a good OP could be the result of getting someone more talented than the rest of the staff to do it and so can't be viewed in a similar fashion.

Heavy Metal L-Gaim 2:
Amu and Kyao are already bickering like an old married couple. I like how Daba and Kyao felt out of their element in the big city. So far, the setting of this show and the fact that everything has had a chance to breath. There's some hints as to where the plot will be heading, but so far the pacing has been pretty refreshing.

Not that I put any stock in the ANN editorial staff, but they're over the moon about it for some reason.

That's probably a good sign that it isn't worth watching.

I was thinking about checking out Bodacious Space Pirates, but its hideous OP sapped all motivation to do so.

Hey, the OP is one of the few good things about the show. What other anime can you name that opens with a SAILOR CHANTEY? It fills me with hope that this week might be the week that the show actually gets good, though the fact that I need to be refilled with that hope every week kind of speaks for itself.

I want one of these in my life now.

Nisemonogatari 04

Noooo I miss Hanekawa's older design :(

I thought this episode was pretty solid overall. I liked a lot of Araragi's dialogue for some reason here and also dat cathedral/bathroom design haha.

Persona 4 animu 15

It was okay I guess as it's pretty obvious that it wouldn't live up to the sheer amazingness of last week's episode oh man. Interesting turn of events at the end of this episode too...

I can't buy into that too much, or rather I don't think I could get into the mindset of trying to guess at the quality of a show based on its OP. I mean I really didn't like either Penguin Drum OPs for example...

One Piece 380

I must make special note of this, because Bink's Sake just made me cry.

I know that feel, bro. Everything about Brook's backstory just tears your heart out and tramples on it, and then they come up with the most amazingly bittersweet melody for the anime adaptation of the Bink's Sake song. Just because of the emotion behind it, it's one of my favorite musical pieces in all of anime.

Their Baccano BD boxset was well put together and well priced.

I heard that they didn't even bother to make English-language menus for the BDs but merely used the Japanese menus and annotated them. Is this true?

Maru Maru Poyo (Maru!) 04:
The pro-cat agenda of this show is off-the-charts.

Watashi no Chiisana Uma: Yujo no Mahou Desu 41: This is about as tense as you can get this premise to work, even if the ending was telegraphed very obviously. The way they handled the message was pretty nice too, making fun of the formula while still hammering on the importance of nakama.

I think it was worse than that. I heard they didn't bother translating any of the on-screen text on the show, which makes it harder to understand the jokes in the episode previews.

Persona 4 16
IT'S A TRAP!
Besides that, nice to see they threw in Kanji's S-link in the middle of the episode.
I also liked that the team isn't scared of shadows or whatever else might come their way but instead they are scared of the status Old Age.

The menus are in both English and Japanese - barebones, but they look nice and get the job done.

Gotcha. That doesn't sound so bad, though Aniplex taking the easiest way out with some of their releases and then charging the absolute max that they possibly can for them is still pretty sad. I'm surprised that Baccano even got an artbox for its BD release and wasn't just the Japanese packaging.

Actually the lack of structural cohesion in Penguin Drum's OPs prefigured the lack of structural cohesion in the show as a whole.

Indeed, most of Aniplex USA's releases are ridiculously priced. I would love to buy Fate/Zero, but alas.

Nisemonogatari 4

Well, that was certainly something.

Best quote I found on the matter so far that I agree with:
Maaya Sakamoto channeling Ami Koshimizu's Holo. I never would have thought this day would come.

They're the most cynical company in the North American anime industry. With a few exceptions, cater exclusively to a small group compulsive collectors for whom price is no object and fuck everyone else. It's their prerogative to use a high-cost, low-customer business model instead of a more Funimation-like business model, but it feels exploitative when they take it to the pricing extremes that they do. I'm not even buying Madoka, much less Fate/Zero.
I'm near-broke and need the money for a Vita, but that's beside the point :p

Knight in the area 4

It keeps being hilariously bad. The doctor
busting out a book about heart transplant people having memories and stuff of the people they received the heart felt absurd to me. I still feel like she has some secondary goal.
Also, I laughed during Seven and Kakeru's talk at the park
where she tells him the heart he received was from his brother
. That shit felt way too cheesy to me. I don't know if the goal of that scene was to move me emotionally or not, but it scored some laughs.
The best part of the episode though was the preview for the next episode.

I kind of want to buy Madoka, but $40 minimum for only four episodes is fucking ridiculous. At least it has a dub, though. Aniplex has their head up their ass about as far as Bandai Visual. On one hand, it shows they care fuck all about piracy and on the the other it shows they want to fuck over those who do want to legitimately buy/own the product.

ipreordered tha Madoka discs but I wont but Fate/zero.

Funny thing is that if you have the cash, the hellish $400 Aniplex releases might not be a bad investment. I think I saw one of the Kara no Kyoukai sets go for $800 on ebay once, so I guess it's not exactly flushing money down the toilet.
