I just realized I'm racist :(

I was listening to Tell Me More on Friday, and I missed the beginning of an interview with a Republican congressman from Florida.

He sounded a bit smug and I thought he was a dick, just as a stupid snap judgement. And at one point, as he and Michel Martin were discussing Newt Gingrich's food stamp comments, he said that maybe these politicians, before speaking about issues that are "somewhat peculiar to the African-American community" should check in with a leader or high-profile figure in the black community, to make sure things sound ok.

Before this sentence was over, I thought this sounded incredibly racist, and I was getting fairly worked up. Then, he finished off with "and get us involved in the dialogue and let us help them understand how you communicate these issues" and I realized he is one of the African-Americans he was talking about.

I had assumed he's white, and when I found out he is black, I instantly felt ok about the comments he made. Furthermore, I started thinking he sounds respectable, reasonable, and relate-able, instead of "a dick," as I had previously thought.

And, I mean, this change in my opinion was instant. I was kinda disgusted at myself.

I started analyzing why it happened. Part of it is a bias against Republicans (personality-wise, a lot of them are dicks, even though I like minimal government), so that's probably why I started with a more negative opinion than I should have had. But when I found out he's a black Republican, I took it as a statement of ambition and ballsiness. Ugh -- I can't believe I typed that. That's so freaking racist. I was probably also happy that he sounded smug and confident, and not just trying to "be nice" and being overly apologetic. Fuck.

I'm really sorry to humanity. I just discovered this about myself and I'm going to try to work it out of my system.

U lost me here.

Sometimes it takes a while for people to get it. I've gotten email chains from people about the birther stuff, and I responded that it's racist. They don't think it is. They don't see how obvious the racism is that they think the President isn't "one of us" and he must be foreign and cannot be trusted on anything.

You do realize that by comparing yourself to real racists is well racist right?

You seem to be downplaying how despicable and harmful actual racists are and the damage they do to the world.

Go get one friend of the race you have problems with. Make them a best one. You never have to be seen with them but just bring them up around said race.

Problem solved.

whether we admit it or not we all have some sort of prejudices (the subconscious is a powerful thing). it's good to stop and recognize them though, to lessen their influence on our behavior.

Lighten up, GAF!

Yeah, I felt really dirty after thinking it, and I had a need to apologize to the world at large, at least by talking it out. So, yes, I am being an apologist douchebag.

I have no counter for that, I assumed you'd be defensive and junk...

...stil reading thread.

EDIT: Are you racist or not? Everything in the OP leads me to believe you are sympathetic to other races, or maybe you're black and feel ashamed? Seriously, what gives?

I'm just not seeing the "racism".

Unless maybe you hate "the human race"...I did that when I was 15.

Personally I've thought to myself, how much Obama should take it to Newt on those food stamp comments if they go head to head in the election. In a debate he should ask him whats wrong with being named the food stamp President considering the alternative is letting poor people go without food. I'm sure Newt would respond with typical bullshit political rhetoric, but it annoys me that Obama wants people to back him and he always points out these "ideological differences" between himself and the Republicans that stunt progress, yet he never actually calls out what they are, why he is right and they're not, and so on.

If you're going to debate someone, then call them out on why they're wrong, just don't call out that they're stunting progress.

Yeah completely off topic from the OP, but that food stamp comment by Newt always annoys the fuck out of me, equally annoying is Obama doesn't have the balls or grit to really take them to task for it.

ITT people who have never faced actual racism get all hot and bothered about how their own perceptions are molded.

You though a guy was white and your opinions on his experience at talking about african-american issues changed when you found out he was african-american. Wowee. Let's lock you in a cage.

Before I click on a thread with a title about some crime or mob I think 'Please be a white guy, please be a white guy..'

I know its terrible but things are just worst if people read about a minority committing a crime.

Everyone's a little bit racist sometimes.

Doesn't mean we go around committing hate crimes.

Look around and you will find that no one's really color blind.

Maybe it's a fact we all should face.

Everyone makes judgments based on race.

kinda confused here folks

I think what he's saying that after he found out it was a black Republican was saying it, he thought that the politician's stance was good. I guess he is saying he has a bias against white people and for black people?
