Thanks for the tip on the dealextreme case. It's really pretty.

Took fucking forever to arrive though. I suppose that's free shipping from Hong Kong for you.

I went ahead and ordered that case in both colors (only 4 bucks a pop, why not?) but yeah it's taking forever. I think i'm on 3 weeks already.

Thats fucking sweet. So are these features that were "dormant" in iOS5 or are they full on hacks/tweaks?
IIRC, when you ask Siri to launch an app it says "I can't do that, yet."

I think they are full on hacks. There was a mod pre iOS5 that introduced similar features. The next useful Siri tweak to look out for is one that gets it to work offline. Siri should at least switch to Voice Control when there isn't an internet connection.

Got a link to the case? I can't find it, looks pretty awesome and I'll pick one up if its only $4.
Otherwise I still can't find a case that keeps the nice aesthetics of the 4S while protecting it.

For those of you with iPhones, did you get apple care on your phone? I'm might be getting one unsubsidized and debating whether to get the warranty.

Eh, I've never had any issues with my phone outside of the home button dying out and they've always fixed that for free. Or at least they used to do. So, no I didn't get it.

You've had it fixed after the 1 year?

I believe that it was fixed within a year and that pushed the warranty back a bit further. I had a similar issue and they fixed it due to the history of the phone. Aside from the home button on my 3GS, the only other issue I had with that phone was the headphone jack. The internals broke apart about one month before the 4s came out. Mind you, I used the jack damn near every day and multiple times a day.

Random question, but does anyone extensively use Notification Center at all?

The only time I ever go in there is by accident. The notifications on the lock screen and the pop-up at the top are the only things I interact with...but the pull down is completely useless to me.

Yeah I use notification center a lot. Usually just for texts and twitter DMs. I usually don't read/respond to messages right away.

its a lot less useful than the notification bar on Android for some reason. I think its because on Android apps can put little service-like widgets there or status indicators. i dont know.

I've had my 4s about a week now and just noticed that when then phone is locked and I push the home button to get to the lock screen the wifi indicator appears after a few seconds. Am I losing connection to my wifi when the phone locks?

I only made it to get jailbreak people out of this thread. I'd submit that you guys that actually care about the subject make a new thread and get that one closed.

I lobbied for someone to make a jailbreak thread forever and no one did so I just made one myself.

If you have your phone with you all the time and check every message or notification as it comes you won't have much use for it.

I mainly use it to check on unchecked email and messages and my calender. It is nice to have all of that info on one screen.

Anyone else's 4S leak battery like a mofo at night on standby? My phone went from 55% to 23% overnight. My 4 would lose like 8-10% a night in contrast.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think it disables Wi-Fi when the phone isn't in use so the Wi-Fi radio isn't draining battery.

Hey now, don't pretend like you've never used a jailbroken iDevice. You know you want those features. We can make your notification center so useful ;)

I'd probably still jailbreak my phones if it wasn't a constant cat and mouse game. Not updating to the latest versions as soon as they were released was much more annoying to me than not having the ability to quickly do certain tasks.

I support the concept in general, I just don't recommend anyone gets involved unless they are a deeply committed tinkerer.

My new phone should be here next week I think. I ordered it late last night, but it is getting sent to my billing address (Missouri). I already gave my parents a heads up and asked them to turn around and ship it back out when they get it.

Also bought a Speck Candyshell for it (Black/Blue) for $18 which should get here about the same time the phone does. My buddy had a Candyshell on his 3GS and I really liked the way it felt and enclosed the phone. I like the way it looks too. I'm not too concerned about getting something that looks fashionable or trendy, so this will do the job for me.

This will be my first iPhone. My contract with ATT just ended and while looking around their site at upgrades, I learned that though the contract is over, I can still carry over my unlimited data when I get a new one. I initially planned on getting a refurbed 32GB 4 last month for $150, but they were out of those, so I sprang for a 4S.

I wish I had gotten the 64GB version though, but I couldn't spend that extra $100. I have had a 32GB iTouch for a while now and have gotten close to running out of space several times before having to delete a hundred or so apps here and there to make room.

Yep. I don't have emails setup to go to the lock screen, so I check the notification center to see if there's anything worth reading right away. I also use it to check the current temp.

Is there any special care I should take in formatting my phone before selling it? I know the usual process, but is there anything else I should keep in mind?

So anyone have any recommendations for external battery packs?

I don't want one of those battery cases with the battery built-in, but I'd like something I can plug in and juice up my iPhone if necessary. We've got a Disney trip coming up in October and I'll definitely need one for then. My sister had a little block version she used with her iPhone 3G similar to this design here. It worked well, but the issue is that it was too low profile to work with the Candyshell case I had on my iPhone at the time, so I'd have to constantly remove and reapply my case whenever I needed to use the battery pack.

So I'm eyeballing the Mophie Powerstation as it seems to connect via a cable instead of directly into the dock connector with a physical connection on the block itself (If that makes any sense.)

It's got more mAh than most other iPhone batteries, but I figure I can let everybody in my traveling party use it if necessary as we've all got iPhones.

Thoughts?

This is for my iPod 4G, but how do you add your own videos to the iPod for viewing? I've tried dragging and dropping in iTunes, but nothing shows up. And if I get it to show up in the the library, it doesn't work if I drag it to the iPod area in iTunes.

Videos are mostly m4v files, but some might be avi. I could convert them to another format if needed, but I'd prefer not to.

avi won't get imported to iTunes, you need MPEG-4 (.mp4 or .mov or .m4v) videos. Also they will probably need to be re-converted before you can transfer them to your iPod. Easiest way is, after you've added a video to iTunes, select the video and go to "Advanced" > "Create iPod or iPhone Version", then try dragging it to your iPod.

The keyboard is still killing me. Which makes no sense to me.
When I had my first iPhone I LOVED the keyboard, I never once had any problems with it. But now its a daily annoyance. I can't figure out what the issue is. I guess maybe I type faster now, but I've always typed extremely fast on mobile qwertys. Its not the transition from my Droid, either. Because I had a sidekick before I got the first iPhone.

I swear they've changed the prediction/correction logic. It just drives me fucking crazy now.

Yes, it changed in iOS 5.

They have never quite fixed it since the very first Beta.

Oh my god, I knew it! Are there any articles that explain exactly what and how it changed?

You just blew my mind. I never had a problem with it either and now I've noticed I have problems with mistyped or miscorrected words. iOS5 had been a disappointment for me so far.

I'm not sure what they changed exactly, but it looks to me like it's doing contextual auto-correct vs. just a spelling check.

Like sometimes I type in real words and it tries to auto-correct them to other real words and the only reason I could ever see to do this would be that it's trying to work at intent in addition to spelling.

while we're on the topic, anyway to disable the mic/speech to text button the keyboard? that thing drives me nuts too, I always accidentally hit it.

Holy crap! I thought my typing had just gone downhill despite being able to type just fine on both of my iphones (3gs and 4s). Even tried different cases to see if my problem was typing on glass v. screen protector v. built-in screen protector on otterbox - still had problems with typing on both phones (3gs was on ios5 before I retired it).

Still though, sucks that they haven't improved the keyboard as I'm way more proficient at typing on it than when I got my first ios devices (ipod touch & iphone 3gs).

So I'm trying to help my mother create an Apple ID etc, but after writing in the credit card information, it just says it is unable to activate the account, and that we should try again later. But it said that a month ago when she got it from me as a Christmas present.. =/

What am I supposed to do?

To the Apple store!

I've been wondering about that myself. I, too, have started mistyping things more often lately… I was wondering if the capacitive touchscreen was different on my 4S compared to my old 3GS.

Crazy.

Ok so I finally restored my phone from my 4 to my replacement 4S. Pretty much had an issue the moment the restore finished. It just looks a lot more washed out than my 4. It doesn't have a yellow tint, it's actually quite cool in colour, however, the black level and contrast is probably 5-15% worse than my old 4. I also compared it to my sisters 4S and whilst hers is too yellow for my liking, it does have better colours, contrast and black levels.

What gives? And can I swap this at an Apple store? Unfortunately Vidafone won't do it and say some variations can exist, but I do not want this washed out version.

Ok, so being curious I did a quick little comparison. My 4S 64GB vs my sisters (White) vs my mums Galaxy S2. Wow at the differences. WTF...

4Svs4SvsS2BlackComparisonResized.jpg

What are you surprised at?

The Galaxy S2 has an OLED screen which produces perfect blacks.

You can flip that test around and show a pure white screen and the 4S' will do much better.
