Yeah, I think you and I are talking about the same thing on the parentheses front. As far as U.S. punctuation and grammar, I have absolutely no idea about any of it.

I always find a question mark outside of quotation marks quite sloppy. It just doesn't look right to me.

Also, in British English we tend to use the single and double quotation marks differently to American English. They're actually called 'inverted commas' in British English.

Saying "ax" is also a totally valid in certain dialects :D I actually remember reading somewhere that this was originally how it was said, but I don't remember the details...

Odd. That's how I feel, but I'm American, and we're taught it's wrong!

I hate the negative space created by the quotation mark and the punctuation mark when it's outside, it makes me want to squish everything together.

How do you use a single quote?

The only use I now of in American English is including a quotation (or phrase otherwise typically using quotation marks, like a sarcastic inclusion) inside of a quotation, inception-style.

I think because I read too many books written by British authors that haven't been localized for US audiences, my punctuation and spelling sometimes changes between the two. I know I've had times where I used one style or the other.

It's used more frequently in British English. When marking off a word or phrase we tend to use single quotation marks. We tend to use double quotation marks if we're directly quoting someone.

Quotations within quotations are usually the reverse to how they are used in American English.

My school was so vehemently against prescriptivist, it was almost funny. Not that I don't agree. (My last certificate was in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, which is why I got so into linguistics! :D)

The PS3 demo wouldn't even start for me. Just sat at the loading screen over and over again.

And ya'll are wrong about MGS but it's OK, sometimes people make mistakes.

I can't decide whether or not to get it on PC, PS3 or xbizzle. But I played the demo on steam so I will probably buy it there

I tend to switch between them in certain ways too. I'm not sure how much it really matters. It's just that in British English we use single quotation marks more frequently than you do in America.

I want to play it too, but no money at the moment :| I so wanted to be a ... whatever that dark elf equivalent was :D
 
MGS... I've never been a huge fan of the series. I did like the first and third ones, and the second and fourth have pretty good gameplay to make up for their terrible stories.

Btw, anyone see that Game of Thrones Season 2 teaser that came out today? Looks amazing. There's time to watch the first season before S2 begins in April!
