People arguing about which music is better than other music is like people arguing about what color is the best color.

Are they actually putting effort into doing things in English this time?

My friend said the production on the English album is laughable.

I guess I should be happy that people are sucking up the flimsy disposable parts of my culture and leaving the rich, tradiaiotnal stuff alone.

Yeah, I guess the rich traditional stuff is just not that impressive to non-Koreans.

Why do they have 9 people? Quality OVER Quantity, I say.

Hmmmm... a lotta haters up in here. Oh well, I think Zzoram nailed it. Keep listening to Tool play the same song for 20 years or whatever it is that you like. Truly you have discovered the deep philosophical purpose of music manifest in the single style from which it should never deviate.

I hate The Boys and have railed on it non-stop since it came out. Fuck you, Teddy Riley.

disney has been pumping out manufactured crap all along son.
Yes. I know. What is your point?

They're singing manufactured 1990's tween pop. That's not interesting. I don't care who is doing it. It's an oversaturated market of terrible music.

Oh wait, but they're Korean. That changes....well, nothing. Not really interested in other countries regurgitating our own crap and then trying to sell it back to us 15 years later.

Nothing against them or their music, but that performance was terrible. Im really wondering if they will hit it big in America.

The fact that they were on Letterman and Live with Kelly makes them much more successful than just about every Asian pop star that has tried to break into the market in recent years.

Already been said, but Girls Generation was not meant for such a small stage. Their milliseconds perfect choreography was ruined by having to squeeze in between each other.

I would much rather that Clazziquai, GD & TOP, or IU made it big musically in the US than Girls Generation. Girls Generation is much more fun to look at though.

It takes a god-tier musical performance for me to stomach Letterman for any amount of time. From the comments, I take it this is not it.

Atleast there's variety when it comes to american acts

Speaking from ignorance with confidence doesn't change reality. Get back to me about the variety in Korean music when you have lived in Korea. It's not their fault one slice makes it across the ocean.

+1

Its like defending Imagine: Babyz because there's also a shitty series called Petz. They both suck.

No way man!

American music = hip hop about drugs and guns
Chinese = sad songs about people dying
Japanese = Bubblegum anime pop
Korean = Girl bands to the max

There is no variety anywhere. Everywhere is shit.

The above are all lies, I don't actually believe it

GD & T.O.P. should get together with the far east movement. That is sure-fire club jam waiting to happen.

Agreed. Hell, some of their stuff would probably work as is if it had recognition. Honestly though, I don't think they've done their military service yet, so I doubt anything would happen until after that part.

I can't see that happening anytime soon. Even American-born Asians have it rough.

You can't really think that is the only type of music one country (or any really) has to offer, right? haha.

I don't wanna hate or anything like that, but those pictures creep me out a little. I mean they are doing these "hey, let's spontaneously take a picture" kind of poses but at the same time you know that they trained these hours and hours in front of the mirror.
There's no real emotion behind it. They could be robots and you wouldn't know the difference

You act like American doesn't hav pop music. Shit, we have an dedicated thread to a singer that recently changed her name and look and gaffers are eating up her shit souless dead music.

In the mid to late 90's, due to media consolidation for the most part, you had a huge influx of one-hit wonders. I mean, I'm sure you can think of about 30 from a 5 year period. But, there was a diversity of hits. Ska, rock, pop, punk, rap, R&B. Even latin and metal. I don't think the Korean pop scene has any of that. Maybe it will come in time, but not right now. I'll be honest, I got a little vicariously embarrassed for them during the Letterman show performance. When you take this out of the context of the Korean pop scene, it's really apparent just how far behind they are as performers compared to popular Western acts, in my humble opinion.

The mistake they are making is presuming they can become like an American act. They can't. They have some popularity in the US mostly because of two things:

1. Some guys like Asian girls a lot.
2. The admittedly tiny Korean aspect of their music (besides the lyrics) makes them exotic/different.

Trying to come and sing in English and sound more 'American' won't work.

Sexually repressed robots. Be still my cock.

Some of their songs that I've heard have been tolerable, but that one was just...terribad. Not sure how having members whose primary role is dance will play out with American audiences, though I guess a lot popular pop groups here are similar in that only one or two members do more than the chorus.

You've got to be kidding me. If that is really the case, you need to try a bit harder. Good lord.

I've been here long enough to get a sense of things, and the only thing that ever gets any real play is the shallow bubblegum/dance pop. For one thing, korean rock music is an oxymoron.

They were made in the music factory that continuously puts out new girl band idols for fans to fawn over, so I guess they are kinda robots in a way. Also all the surgery too.

Someone in Korea who doesn't like this? lol Koreaboos are gonna come hard on you, they will find a way to discredit your opinion, this can't be happening!
Plenty of Koreans don't like popular kpop, but to claim there is no variety in that market yet there is in America... lol I just can't deal with talk like that. Any region in the world has plenty of cool shit to find. Claims like that are tied to arbitrary boundaries you could redefine at your convenience to save face. It's an obvious bias and in denial of how music is enjoyed and shared around the world.

Have you listened to the radio or watched music tv in ANY country? Because that is pretty much a blanket statement for the entire world.

Also, Delispice finds your comments on korean rock music offensive.

People tend to hate terrible shit, yes. It's fine that you like terrible shit. Most people don't though.

I concur.

Last time I went to Korea. It was full of fucking Koreans.

Nah most people hate terrible shit. This even extends out of music to other forms of pop culture. Just look at the box office numbers for shitty movies like Capt America or the new Mission Impossible.
