Obviously that is more of a Dakota's/Western Minnesota accent. Having lived outside of Wisconsin for ten years I can say that while far less overbearing that that video, we Wisconsinites have a very strong accent. And it's not like I'm from Superior or something, I'm from just outside Milwaukee. Still get the "where are you from?" when I meet new folks.

I demand an episode. Mike, quit getting humiliated by me in Hero Academy and record a damn podcast.

My hometown is Wisconsin Rapids, which is about 20 miles south of the demarcation line for that accent. Whew. It's also less annoying than the Minnesota variant!

Er...No, I'm pretty sure that's just a north midwest accent, which includes Wisconsin. I'm from MN and some of the most blatant accents like that come from Wisconsinites that moved up here.

Bear in mind that we don't all sound like that. At least, we don't think we do.

I'm convinced that if I hear someone from the upper Midwest/upper midwests hat say one of those words I can pinpoint fairly accurately where they are from.

I've met very, very few people who sound as ridiculous as Bobby's mom, however.

I would still vote the midwestern accent as the most neutral in the country. Which sort of fits the culture as well...Everything is neutral, no extremes.

Oh Phil....

Gaston was basically a narcissistic rapist...

He tried to force married belle, without telling her, and at the same time thinking that he was doing her a favor... But he's so funny....

I don't know, watched the movie in 3D last week again and just couldn't stand him... forgot how he died, nodded off during the last 1/4 of the movie.

My wife and I have had this discussion plenty of times. At the beginning of the film, he's just a pompous ass. More annoying than evil. I think the rapist tag might be a little harsh for him...Biff was certainly more aggressive in BTTF. It's not until he has Belle's father committed that he starts to make the transition to true villain.

Sure, he gets a bit...overzealous...in his pursuit of the Beast at the end, and it really does cause his own demise, but I still don't think his death was necessary. A more fitting punishment would have been for him to end up locked in the looney bin where he sent Maurice--scorned by all of the people who admired him so much at the beginning of the movie. Considering that Gaston craves admiration from everyone, being forced to live a life of public shame would probably we worse for him than death.

And yes, I have thought about this too much.

Yup.

That's why I appreciate Miyazaki's films a lot. In most if not all (i have yet to see all his work) of them there's no clear villian, like in disney movies. It just seems to show that child movies can be driven by antagonist-less plot.

Yet that blog post about Totoro changed the way i feel about the movie. Now I don't want to know more about Kiki's since I don't want to ruin my fav miyazaki movie.

Well the thing about that is that... i felt that there was no drive to actually go after the beast... at all. He posed no threat to the village. None. And yet they all felt the need to go a kill it.

Maybe it was mob mentality at work, but of all the things about the movie i felt that was the thing that didn't make sense. Maybe if the beast accidentally hurt maurice in one of his rages, then maybe i could see the mob as justifiable.

Remember that as far as the villagers were concerned, the Beast was a genuine monster. Maurice ran back to town ranting about the horrible fanged creature that kidnapped his daughter, after all. Then, of course, Gaston has his whole song where he continues to feed the notion that the Beast will soon be coming for them. The villagers were already scared of this thing living outside their town, so it wouldn't take much effort to get them to pick up the rakes and torches.

Yet at the same time you see both belle and Maurice fine and unhurt claiming that the beast didn't hurt them.

While the Point can be made that a mob can be easily persuaded, I found that part a little off.

Also how easily the town can throw someone to the looney bin, Jesus. Is not like Maurice was a thread to society. And afaik the movie doesn't point out that one of his inventions ever hurt someone.
 
Phil's impressions are hilarious.

Gaston scares the shit out of me because he is so realistic. He goes from being an annoying egotistical buffoon at the film's start to an prideful, jealous monster by the film's end and the transformation is completely believable. His willingness to prey on the other villagers' fears is scary as hell too. There are a few scenes during the battle between Gaston and Beast where the lightning flashes and gusts of wind show him for the crazed self-absorbed mad man that he is.

As much as I love Beauty and the Beast, it sorta annoys me that Belle, a supposed independent women (by 17th century France standards), ends up in love for her captor and settles down to marry happily ever after. I THOUGHT SHE "WANTED MUCH MORE THAN THIS PROVINCIAL LIFE." She lied to me through song! Anyway, it's an open and shut case of Stockholme Syndrome, and I am sure the beast returned to his old ways shortly after morphing back into 80s Michael Bolton.

e: A big reason why I like Gaston is that he deviates from the Disney norm in a lot of ways. He was an egotistical twat used to getting his way, yes, but he probably wasn't a bad guy to drink, wrestle, or expectorate with. He wasn't outright evil. He just wanted to go hunting, marry the hottest chick, and raise 12 mini-Gastons. His reaction to rejection was extreme, but I have witnessed similar meltdowns myself in real life. No, the cases I've witnessed did not involved riling up village to go murder a beast resembling a buffalo/lion/wolf, but I did see otherwise normal people become amplified versions of their worst selves.
 
Isn't the dude in Edward Scissorhands basically the same character? Big douchebag who handles rejection by becoming homicidal?
 
Seriously, I will animation nerd you all to death if you don't start talking about video games. Michael Barrier and Michael Sporn will make you cry with their opinions on Grim Natwick's death and Milt Kahl's negative influence on Gaston.

And then we'll move on to art animation and I'll go on about Aleksandr Petrov and then I'll be reminded that no one on the podcast (mik, post facto?) played Little King's Story AND THEN WHERE WILL BE? NOWHERE. JUST LIKE KIMURA'S CAREER FOR NOW.

(Good episode, everyone, and I don't particularly like most of the Oddworld games. I loved hearing detailed stuff after it being brought up multiple times over the years.)

Oh god, I know. I wish that whole concept would just go away so I didn't get any more twitter mentions about it. If I were totally into politics and such maybe I wouldn't mind but I dislike politics like I dislike a capella music (with the notable exception of the occasional Bobby McFerrin). November 2012 can't get here soon enough for this all to be over (campaign b.s.).
