This is thing is going to bomb. Period.

Thats the first thought I had walking out of Best Buy this morning. Theres nothing there. No Soul. The Sony brand means nothing, the Playstation brand has seen better days, there are NO games for it, the hardware is nice, but that is completely meaningless. Yeah, lets talk about the hardware. The device is sleek looking, its shiny, its a good weight, the buttons feel clicky- even though they're too small, the screen is up to par.

Par, THATS what the device is. Up to par and not hair over. Finally getting my hands on the Playstation Vita was about the most uninteresting tech experience I've ever had. "Hmm, so thats that. Its all there. The tilt functionality, the screen thats about as good as my cellphone, two joysticks, a superfluous capacitive sensor because why not, and some nice steel trim to top it off. Yep, thats something you buy for entertainment in the year 2012."

So thats the hardware in a nutshell: up to snuff.

Oh, did I mention that this thing is chained around the neck of a fellow dude? This guy apparently just walks around Best-Buy with the Vita hanging around his neck all day. I was walking around looking for the big demo-kiosk and asked this random guy stocking Xbox games where it was. He rolled his eyes and took it off his neck. THEN he proceeded to tell me about remote play. I'm going to assume thats how the usual interaction goes, it felt very scripted. So yeah, the first thing people learn about the Vita upon going into that Best Buy is that it can play their PS3 games.

And they're only showing Little Deviants. Which is -I'm sorry- the WORST game ever. Worse than Fantavision, worse than Steel Diver, worse than GUN for 360, and worse than Red Steel. At least those games are interesting. At least you can kinda go "oh yeah, that does sound a little neat" to those games. LD is the most boring fucking game ever. Period. I let out an audible groan when the guy booted it up. There is absolutely nothing there. The concept is uninteresting, the characters are uninteresting, the graphics are terrible, just name "LITTLE DEVIANTS" makes me shudder with boredom. I find Little Deviants to be offensive. Its not a good but secretly bad launch title like we're so used to. It is just downright unacceptable for Sony to be showing this game off.

I didn't spend enough time with the UI/Menu system to really form an opinion. It seems ok. Just ok. I wasn't a fan of the bubble aesthetic from the start, but I knew that going in. Its a shame they couldn't gin up something a little more stylish.

So thats my impressions of the Vita. Perhaps the most uninteresting gaming device I've ever encountered. With all that said though, I think I still want to buy one.

I finalized my pre-orders today. I decided against getting the Wifi/32GB combo. In favor of the Wifi/3G bundle. I made this decision because I couldn't shake the feeling that I was purchasing a gimped system. I don't have much use for 3G outside of browsing the net. But I'll sleep better knowing I have it as an option.. I'll purchase another launch window game or two thanks to the money I saved from dropping the 32GB. I love DD, but I'll wait for the price of the 32GB to come down.

PSVita 3G/Wi-Fi
PSVita Travel Pouch (dropped the starter kit). I saw a video of this pouch, it looks much smaller than the pictures. That sold me.
PSVita Protective Film - Two Pack

Uncharted(retail, only because I love the series, and reports are it's of decent length)
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3(retail)
Wipeout(retail for now)
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (PSN)

Damn if that's your impression of the Vita's design and features, what did you think of the 3DS which has even fewer features and is undeniably ugly.

I am so offended by Little Deviants that I don't even think it should exist.

I left the DS demo unit impressed by the 3D and fondly remembering StarFox64. My point wasn't that Vita hardware isn't nice, it was that nice is bog-standard nowadays.

1) What could the Vita have been hardware wise that would have impressed you then?
2) No games? Seriously?
3) Little Deviants does suck
4) Fantavision was awesome (especially the Japanese version)

A+ would read again

The fact that you hated on FantaVision just proves you have no taste.

LittleDeviants is pretty much the worst game to show off though, I'll give you that.

Amazing post. Had a twist ending too.

This is thing is going to bomb. Period.

I don't think this can really be said yet. There are some amazing launch titles and even more amazing titles on the horizon.

While we're all entitled to our own opinions, I think yours is a bit premature.

I love JTwo's opinions. I hardly ever agree, and this is no different, but I like when people put their opinion out there no matter how much it differs from the norm.

I just tested out a demo unit at GS. It's an impressive piece of hardware, no doubt, but I feel kind of underwhelmed. Maybe it's from all of the hype. I have really been looking forward to the PSV since the price was announced at E3.

I tried out Gravity Rush and Wipeout 2048.

30 fps hurts Wipeout 2048. It is hard to go back after playing HD at 60 fps for so long. The game does look incredible, however. Maybe the wider tracks (laughably wider) and the incredible detail/depth will make up for the frame rate. It would have been nice to test run at Phantom speeds.

Gravity Rush was very impressive. The game looks great and I had a lot of fun just floating around and manipulating gravity. It felt like a free floating version of Ghost in the Shell for PS1.

The analog sticks had less travel than expected. It will take some adjusting, but they are worlds better than the original PSP's (and even the 3DS's) analog slidey nub thingy. They feel similar to the old Saturn 3D controller's. Most important, they felt very durable.

I will pick one up in the summer when I have the cash.

I agree with you on that. I also have to say a few thoughts based on what I've read:
1) Playing something which has been forcibly chained to a person's neck is just plain awkward
2) Having a device forcibly chained to your neck as an employee is likely an awkward, and miserable experience.
3) Little Deviants seems like something which had to be bundled to be sold at all
4) Why would you chain this thing to a person, who moves around the store, rather than have a kiosk?

I gained the most favorable impression from visiting both gamestop and best buys demo units.

At best buy the UI, near, browser, settings, multi tasking cross game chat etc are all available to tinker with but they have nothing intresting to play for games unfortunately.

At GameStop the unit is in demo mode with the ui basically disabled. Though, they have several really excellent demos.

I'd go to GameStop first to try the games and best buy second if you want to toy with the settings and UI

2) No games? Seriously?
3) Little Deviants does suck
4) Fantavision was awesome (especially the Japanese version)

Look, if they just had a really really nice version of Ridge Racer running at 60fps and looking about as good as Burnout Paradise with a fully featured and modern online experience. I know I would be feeling completely different right now. I'm mature enough to realize that this is just from that one experience, and not indicative of the entire picture. But I experienced it nonetheless. And as a pretty technology-interested guy I think it really says something that my first encounter was met with belligerent indifference.

Its really hard to articulate how I feel about this. I liked it, but it was just so unexciting. It was a complete let down. There is nothing in the launch lineup or launch window that excites me. Thats how launches go, there needs to be ONE thing that you can key in on and get excited about. Vita doesn't have that, at least not for me. There isn't one thing that I can meditate on and push my negative feelings down with. Gravity Daze does look cool, but thats not enough to make me fervent with excitement. I know that post reads like I'm just trolling, but its important to remember that I do want (and in likelihood will buy) one of these things. Its just. Damn. Theres nothing new to see here.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have ragged on Fantavision. I remember liking it.

I don't think this can really be said yet. There are some amazing launch titles and even more amazing titles on the horizon.

If it doesn't sell in Japan, I have a hard time believing it will selling any better here.

Period!

I tried to play Wipeout HD, but I got to a point where driving wasn't easy anymore (3rd stage?).

Going to get Wipeout 2048, but anyone have tips for me?
You could try this in HD:
Use a ship with good handling and decent acceleration. Then try to finish a lap (in racebox mode) without hitting anything, keep doing that faster and faster until you get the hang of it. The key is to improve your use of the airbrakes and getting used to the ship.

One time when I was tripping I had an hour conversation with the man on the moon. I was going insane, But I experienced it nonetheless.

Seemed similar enough of an anecdote.
One time I was tripping out really hard and imagined myself going to get some water. The water was so cold and refreshing, and I was marveling at how the glass was sweating. Each bead was refracting light and I could see tons of little reflections of my kitchen. Then I opened my eyes and realized I was still laying on the couch.

It's weird because the more I played with it the more I liked it, and it must be one of the first times that I've tried a hardware I was hyped about and left even more convinced than I was.

I WANT ONE.

PS: Why are you guys paying so much attention to someone that only tried Little Deviants with a very negative attitude?

That's funny, I just got done playing Little Deviants @ my local GameStop. It wasn't necessarily good, but it definitely wasn't horrible. Just a harmless mini-game collection showing off the VITA's features. The Rolling minigame was probably the best one.

COME AGAIN

That sucks :(

I saw a dude trying to play it but he was confused about the controls and left. Thankfully I had almost an hour to try it out so I could play or watch Gravity Rush, Wipeout 2048, Ridge Racer and Virtua Tennis 4.

All of those look amazing except RR which had framerate problems, but my god aren't the sticks A LOT more comfortable than PSP. Seeing Virtua Tennis 4 at 60 FPS with that perfect IQ and such a precise control on a handheld was really something.

Gravity Rush controlled perfectly too, at least for me, and I kicked the boss' ass without problems :) So good.

Couldn't try Wipeout myself but it looked awesome as well. And the OS (even though in DEMO MODE so I could only access the games) was so snappy, same with the touch screen.

Yeah, the controls for Escape Plan take a bit of figuring out. Especially when you realize that you don't control the characters.

It had to happen.

Nice.
But I'm dead serious about that remark. If I had to only say one sentence about the Vita it would be exactly that. In the grand scheme of gaming right now, what does the Vita offer thats unique. And don't say the rear touchpad. I'll give you that, it IS unique. But its hardly the game changer that the iPhone's touchscreen or the Wii's motion control is.

Its not the graphics.

Its not the screen.

Its not really the controls. Two analogue sticks are great, but its not like its anything new.

Its not the mobile 3G you can only use for asynchronous gaming. Even then, asynchronous multiplayer is iOS's bread and butter.

It certainly isn't the software.

What is there here that I should be excited for? Just because? Yeah, I can dig that. But I'm just not feeling it. What can I get on the Vita that I can't get somewhere else? When the first PSP launched it WAS the graphics. Thats what I was excited for. I was excited to finally have 3D gaming on a portable. Now that doesn't matter.

You know what. Here is my one totem of excitement actually. I had forgotten about this in all my negative points. Its Digital Distribution. This is the first gaming-first device that is starting out with all DD all the time. Straight from the get go. That does excite me.

you should honestly go to gamestop instead you'll have better experience

Yeah, the controls for Escape Plan take a bit of figuring out. Especially when you realize that you don't control the characters.

The controls were only tough for me becuase the unit at GameStop had this large grip on the bottom of it where it was tethered to the stand; I couldn't go under and do the Pinch command without it getting in the way, and that caused a couple deaths for me.

Nice.

1) It's new as no handheld has ever done it.

2) PSPGo came and did it better, you didn't have to buy a memory card...

I don't care that a handheld hasn't done it. I don't care that Vita is a handheld at all. Its just another thing to play games on. And right now I desperately need a new thing to play games on. The PSPGo was in absolutely no way all DD from the start. The PSPGo was a PSP without the UMD slot.
