The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

Be sure to note performance. I would like to know how big of a hit DOF is to FPS.

I'm loving this DOF mod.

I used the Jasmin one, and used the Medium setting and so far it's easily my favorite ENB setup so far. It kicks arse.

I've noticed no performance hit at all (however it's on SSAO fast mode which means no Indirect Lighting). I'm going to see what else it will affect.

I actually think this is going to be my 'main' choice from now on. I don't think I'm going to be able to live without it.

I'm going to try the 'High' option now.

Some new shots. Travelling at night isn't a great idea in case you get attacked in such dark.

Skyrim sold really well I'm not surprised.

I'm honestly surprised at how it was doing late last year. Every day during the Winter Sale it was on spot 2 or 3 in Top Sellers, despite only being on sale during two of those days and being at full $60 during the rest. It blew away MW3 on Steam in terms of player activity and I'm sure also in sales.

I mean, it was a AAA game but Jesus.

- 4GB address aware patch.
- Compiler optimizations.
- Memory optimizations.
- Hitching between cell boundaries fixed.
- High res texture pack. (???)

The hell is going on at Bethesda? It's like they...care.

I know what's next after that...
- High res Shadow pack
- DX11 (I really wonder if they are actually going to implement this. That DX10 folder is so suspicious, yet so a waste of space if they aren't going to use the library.)

Using Steamworks also makes this stuff a lot easier.

But I think the main thing is that Bethesda has started to realise lots of post-release support, and the stuff they're doing with the Steam Workshop to promote mods, can give PC game sales a much longer tail.

Are you using a mod to get that purple hue on the door in the second to last image?

I'm using the Realistic Lighting mod linked a bit earlier. On my phone so can't link.

Not using ENB.

With all the mods and AO, my frame rate ranges from 30-60. Without AO I'm sure I'd get a constant 60 fps.

Mmm maybe I should get around to using those lighting mods. I hate how light everything is. I picked Khajit because that's what I did TES4 with. I loved the minor racial power (night vision) because I used it all the time. In TES5 I didn't have a need to use it even once, 98 hours in. Every dungeon is well lit, every building, and even outdoors with no light is like having a full moon every night.

Play a Khajit in TES5 because they are cool cat people, but don't pick them because of the minor racial, you'll never use it. I shoulda been a Nord ;)

Rumor has it the surprise is a high res texture pack:
High resolution textures by Bethesda's standards is 1024x1024. At least it would be nice to have something better than stock until the real high res packs are finished. The textures on the rear of the shields are unacceptable.

72850 is Skyrim's steam app number.

Wish they would've done this at release instead of having modders spend countless hours recreating textures from scratch.[/quote]
:O I hope it's true :)

Thinks needed the 1st day of the ck:

-One hit kill traps.
-Less frequent but harder dragons.

Down the road:
-Hard Core mode.

Not sure about the textures, don't know if i'll sacrifice quicker load times and less stutering for some better quality up close. Maybe if they allow a quick switch to activated would be a weelcome addition.

How does it compare to Witcher 2's incredible DoF? I found DoF really offputting if it's poorly done, but it looks amazing when it's well designed.

Personally, I'm in love! I'll not be able to go back. It's not perfect - for example it's a little jarring when running along outside and it can't "keep up if you swing the camera between perspectives quickly" and it seems to make the image shudder a little bit...

But, I can accept that because it's just so damn good.

I think the reason it's like that is because it's not build with the actual game and rather it's a post processing affect, and it uses the DOF affect based upon what the middle pixel of the game is pointing at.

But you know all those DOF pictures that everyone has been swooning over that look so amazing but are actually fake? Well... I've been swooning over a game that actually looks like that and just having eyes bleeding with joy. Here's some screens for example.

These two were taken using TFC 1 to show how the DOF works... IMO, this shows how impressive it really is. Just a slight change in the camera's POV and the image changes substantially. I'm going to have SO much fun with this :) I love DOF.

There is already a mod for insta-kill traps, like if you get hit by a trap it will kill you.

There is also Deadly Dragons which makes Dragon's pretty god damn hard. I have to spend a lot of time making sure my character is TOUGH and that I have a lot of potions out there in the world because I've been getting as many hard arse mods as possible, but I only dare use Deadly Dragons 'Hard', Deadly Dragons 'Hardcore' is fucking ridiculous. I fought a dragon for 4 hours one day and I only took it down half health - however this was before I had started spending so much time on my gear and making sure I was in peak condition for every fight and it really was a challenge for every hit on that one because if he got me in his sights I was dead. It was incredibly fun, but just way to hard and eventually I had to console kill it because I died probably 500 times.

So I put it back to just 'Hard' and the Dragon fights are still impressivly hard enough for me and I've got weapons doing 400 - 500 damage (I'm not even level 50 yet).

Just yesterday I had to fight 3 Dragon Priests (WTF!!) and my god was that an impressively fun battle. I died once which was a bitch because I shouldn't have and even though I'm powerful, these bastards still gave me a run for my money! SOOO good fighting 3x Frost Artronach and 3x Dragon Priest at once. I think the only reason I won was because I had some pretty powerful Magicka Regen Poisons with me and they had to run away and re-charge for a while. The only reason I won that fight was because I had frost and magic resistance, if I didn't, I would have been completely decimated.

I want to see if I can get a set of gear that has such a high level of 'Regenerate Health' Enchantment on it that my health just re-plenishes as soon as I get hit, that would be fun :)

Also, two handed with a super powerful Dagger and a Sword is freaking awesome. I've been using the Shards of Narsil (dagger) and Narsil as my blades in two handed at the moment and it's so damn fast to fight that way, some enemies just have no chance. But it's still fun to be fighting ppl that have the ability to take you on. It's also not like I'm super OP, however alchemy is the OP part... well, not really but it can save me from pretty much any situation.

The mod I want is alchemy grenades or AOE exploding magic arrows (I'm not a mage) :D

Is there a way to get FOV (I use FOV 90) to remain saved? Seems like each time I enter a door it resets to default.

Thanks for the sugestions Colonial. I knew about those mods already but i was thinking that if they are done with CK they might be, i don-t know, more "clean", stable or easier to implement. I don't know, anyway i counting on those (insta traps, harder dragons and maybe hardcore mode) for the second playthrough.

It seems you already added the 2 lines to the .ini, the other part was using the FOV in the console command, then after you save the FOV will remain. At least that's how i rememmber it works, might be wrong thought.

In Skyrim.ini, under [Display]
Code:
fDefaultWorldFOV=90
fDefault1stPersonFOV=90.0000

You can set FOV in game as well to check, but this should save your FOV permanently.

Traps: Deadly Traps and Sickly Diseases + Subliminal Traps And once the CK is released, we'll likely see tripwire be made even more subtle in Subliminal Traps.

Harder Dragons: Deadly Dragons De-facto dragon mod right now, although I don't recommend installing the creature, spells, armor, and other optional addons. DeadlyDragons.esm and DeadlyDragonsNormal.esp or DeadlyDragonsHard.esp are all that are required.

Hard Core mode: Pluto's Improved Skyrim Experience This mod is continually being updated and he still has much more to do. Right now, this is the best "hardcore" mod out there and has a huge headstart on those that might come out after the CK. As an example of how difficult it is, if all esps are enabled, most struggle even with Adept in PISE. By comparison, Master in vanilla Skyrim is a walk in the park. At least keep an eye on it, because with the CK and especially Papyrus, this mod has a bright future.

Another note on hardcore mode mods: Avoid WiS. Wars in Skyrim is poorly coded, advertises features that are simply not in the mod, and, as of now, is far beyond it's original scope. WiS III and earlier aren't so bad, though. Unless you want a sub-par, messy overhaul mod, I highly recommend you do not use WiS IV.

How does it compare to Witcher 2's incredible DoF? I found DoF really offputting if it's poorly done, but it looks amazing when it's well designed.

This is my favorite thing about Skyrim Enhanced Shader's.

Most(all?) post-processing mods - at least those based on ENB - are toggleable and you can edit them even when in-game.

I added the lines in the ini file (both config and pref), and I enter 'fov 90' via the command console and it works, it just doesn't save. When I fast travel or enter a building or something (not quite sure), it goes back to default. It's always been like this, I was hoping there had been a fix. AFAIK this is common, or does it actually save for some people?

That should work; at least, it works for most, even through fast travel, saving, and even updating Skyrim. Double check that you have that code in Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini under [Display], load up your save, and type in fov 90 in the console.

If that doesn't work, you could try this mod: Fixed Field of View.

EDIT: Well there's your problem! Put those lines I posted in Skyrim.ini, not SkyrimPrefs.ini, under [Display]. You can go ahead and take out the fov setting under [General].

EDIT2: Also, Skyrim config.ini and Skyrim prefs.ini aren't the actual names of your files, are they? If they are, rename them Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini, respectively.

Does anyone know which files in the root Skyrim folder I should have? I want to get rid of some ENB stuff I have, but I don't remember which files are Skyrim's official ones and which are extras.

They're named properly, I said config.ini but I meant the Skyrim.ini file. My bad.

Tried all options, it's still not saving. Googling shows me it's still a known issue to random people and apparently there isn't a fix and it's not known why it works for some and not for others. At least, not that I can find anyway....sadly.

I tried the mod as well but as soon as I fast travel, everything resets to 60, which is strange because it's not like the ini files are being re-written. The modified lines I add are still in there.

I'm using the Realistic Lighting mod linked a bit earlier. On my phone so can't link.

Not using ENB.

With all the mods and AO, my frame rate ranges from 30-60. Without AO I'm sure I'd get a constant 60 fps.

I can't believe those are supposed to be realistic. There are 2 celestial bodies, one which is humongous, in Skyrim that should be reflecting tons of light and the snow will reflect more especially off the big mountains. Bethesda made it too bright, I guess, but that mod looks way too dark.

Ugh, I'm having terrible luck. On a good note the mods I have installed are working great (knock on wood), but while trying to get this FOV change working, I did the "infamous saveini command" in-game, which has now messed up my map and my loading screen models are all red.

Ex: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2238142 , http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/12...begining-menu/page__p__19345082#entry19345082

The sad part is the 'fixes' listed don't work for me. I've deleted the INI files, didn't work. I've opened to files to look for the lines that I'm suppose to delete to fix the issues, no there.

All this to change the damn FOV. Definitely not worth it.

Has anyone had that red model/messed up map issue and knows an alternative fix that doesn't involve simply deleting the ini files?

I agree that none of them are perfect.

Hopefully after the CK things will be better. Next week should be interesting.

Check for ini's in other folders that shouldn't there. For instance ini's with a mod's name or a skyrim ini in another folder. This was what fixed it for me. Iirc it was in the data folder.

There's a Skyrim.ini in your Data folder now. Delete it. Don't use the saveini console command, as it saves a new Skyrim.ini to your /common/skyrim/Data folder and not your /Documents/My Games/Skyrim folder.

Post your /Documents/My Games/Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini again. I don't understand how the settings I gave you aren't working.

In the future, here's how you should edit your ini while in game, and more specifically for editing the uGridsToLoad setting.
1) Load game while using appropriate UGridsToLoad setting to successfully load it.

2) Alt-Tab out of the game and open Skyrim.ini

3) Revert UGridsToLoad setting to a lower/preferred value

4) Alt-Tab back to game and open the console, type "refreshini" without quotes

5) Save game

6) Exit game to desktop

7) Start the game and load your save game

I agree with you, and, going one step further, shouldn't this light coming from the larger moon be of a red tint? I believe one of the planned features for Realistic Lighting once the CK came out was to add varying lighting based on moon phases, surrounding environment(valley vs open plain, building vs dungeon), and possibly weather.

Seached for other Skyrim.ini files, none exist. I even made sure 'show hidden files' was selected under folder options.

Here's a ss of my data folder (newest date modified from top to bottom). The file isn't even in there.

z1Kn9.png

Here's the content of my new skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini file. The ones created when I started the game after deleting the other ones. Issues still remain (red models and bugged map):

They're clear of any modification, so I don't understand why the issue is still there. It makes sense that there's another ini file somewhere, but I've searched. There's literally just this one being found on my HDD.

Uninstall and reinstall time?

Check for /skyrim/skyrim/skyrim.ini, /skyrim/skyrim/SkyrimPrefs.ini, and /skyrim/skyrim.ini. Delete them if they're there. Load up Skyrim and type refreshini in the console.

As for getting fov to work, this is what your Skyrim.ini in /My Games/Skyrim should look like. Changes are in bold.

EDIT: It seems the red logo issue has changed a bit since I last had to fight it. Check this guide for a solution.

CAW, don't want to discourage you but I'll be honest here, I had the red model issue some time ago and there was virtually no way to fix it, I deleted all my .inis and created new ones, the infamous Data folder .ini didn't ever show for me and I nearly went nuts, in the end I deleted my Data folder altogether and used my backup one, had to reinstall all mods but it did solve it.

An official high res texture pack would be great. The high res mods so far have been terrible.
Lets hope high res is actually high res.

But yes, I agree that the HD mods have been pretty disappointing (still better than vanilla).

edit: fuck the red menu glitch. Stayed up past midnight trying to fix it (deleted an ini in my Data folder. Was named after a mod)

I found a SkyrimPrefs.ini under /skyrim/skyrim/, but no skyrim.ini. I deleted the skyrimprefs file, then I went and deleted the skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini in my documents and loaded the game up. Grey models and the map is fix, thank god and of course you and PjotrStroganov.

Frig, what a ridiculous thing.

I modified the Skyrim.ini as you suggested but it didn't work. I can use 'FOV 90' in the console and it will work but the moment I fast travel, it reverts.

It's simply not worth the trouble. I'm actually playing kind of a hardcore style and not using fast travel, and while sometimes it will revert after loading into a building or dungeon, I can just keep setting it via the console as it's pretty easy to do.

The assistance is greatly appreciated guys, much love. :)

I consider myself extremely lucky as that was my next step. Whew.

Yes, I remember reading that possibility elsewhere. Skyrim just sticks those broken settings in any ini it can find. I guess the most comprehensive strategy is to check all your ini's in /common/skyrim and in /My Games/Skyrim for these settings.

Code:
rUIMistMenu_AmbientZPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientZNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXNegRGB=0,0,0

Code:
fMapMenuOverlaySnowScale=0.0000
fMapMenuOverlayScale=0.0000

Oh, glad to see you fixed it. I really don't get how neither that mod nor those ini settings are working. Some other ini must have a fov setting that has priority over yours somehow or another mod is at fault. Sorry you can't seem to get it work. You might just consider a full reinstall to attempt to fix it. You don't seem to be using many mods and the CK is almost out, so if you're going to do it, might as well do it now. Just be sure to backup saves!

I can't believe those are supposed to be realistic. There are 2 celestial bodies, one which is humongous, in Skyrim that should be reflecting tons of light and the snow will reflect more especially off the big mountains. Bethesda made it too bright, I guess, but that mod looks way too dark.

Yeah I've commented on this before. With two moons and tons of snow the nights in Skyrim should be REALLY fucking bright, not dark like these mods make them.

Man, these Witcher 2 armor models look so good they're hard to pass on even if they're not entirely lore friendly, I mean look at Jenassa here, the level of detail is crazy.

So Skyboost is giving me a version compatibility error when I try to start up. I assume a patch came out since I last played. Do I just need to find an updated version? Is there even an updated version out? Did Bethesda make it obsolete?

Skyboost is unnecessary now, the latest patch has even better performance.

Is it safe to overwrite the Water, Flora, Nightsky mods on the Skyrim HD 2K Texture mod? It has a conflict. Or is Skyrim HD the best?

Game is looks so much better so far. Also do i need Nexus Mod Manager open at all items if i want to run Skyrim with mods?

If you use textures that overwrite each other you're going to end up with the last ones you install (ie. if you use Skyrim HD and then another mod that replaces the ground textures as well you still get SKHD's but the ground textures will be from the other mod)

You don't.
