Star Fox (especially on-rails) would be a total waste of Retro's particular talents. Not to mention when a much better dev for these types of games is available.

I agree.

If Retro is actually doing a Star Fox, I'd want it to be similar to Star Fox Adventure.

I guess flying shooters aren't my favorite genre so I am biased.

Retro could do a great Star Fox though, it just kind of would be ho-hum to me in hype.

Whatever ends up getting developed, I hope Retro get a crack at their own IP next gen. I'd love to see what they can cook up if left to their own devices

We have seen that...
Though, to be fair, that was before they got restructured.

On the other hand, they are Retro. The studio basically created to restore and update older franchises.

I meant relocate them if they are indeed getting their hands on a big IP.

But... if Retro are making an IP, won't Nintendo end up dabbling their hands in in some fashion? I'd rather pure, Retro-made material.

You know it's only a guess but looking at the previous work of the two artists (one having done ancient and ruined enviroments, and the other dark, twisted and demonic characters) makes me think Eternal Darkness...

Nintendo is Retro.
Retro is Nintendo.
Regardless of what they do, Nintendo is involved...

A lot of people mention Ravenblade, but how much information was ever released to warrant the demand? A few screenshots and action-rpg genre, if I recall correctly. I'd much rather them make Metroid 1.5 for what its worth. Particularly if they nail that multi-player outline.

There are some gameplay clips on Youtube, it looks godawful.

Retro is my favorite developer and easily among the best, so I'm positive they could've make something great out of it, but christ that looks terrible.

They could probably make something great out of it now, but I don't think it's worth their time and resources to be honest.

Oh man, why didn't I think of Eternal Darkness? It totally fits with AceBandage's rationale that they want a game to fit in with third party offerings too. Imagine an Eternal Darkness with all of the rough gameplay edges sanded off.

Although I will say that I'm a bigger fan of Metroid/Zelda-style gameplay, but I'd be willing to make an exception for Eternal Darkness since it's so unique.

Well, Retro making ED2 was one of the earliest rumors to crop up when all that project cafe stuff was coming out last year.

Eternal Darkness? I've heard insanely good things about that franchise. I never got to check it out though.

Times like this I *really* want that Gamecube VC rumor/statement to be true.

Nintendo should move their development studios to Austin not the other way around

Also I'm pretty sure silicon knights is making eternal darkness 2

I definitely think that is more likely, given their statements on what game they are making and Nintendo trademarking ED again.

E3 this year is going to be insane. Nintendo can drop Pikmin 3, Retro's new project, possibly Eternal Darkness 2, and who knows what else for the WiiU. So many of their studios have been silent and are presumably gearing up for next gen.

I played it for the first time last year (well, I didn't finish it because I got distracted with newer stuff, gotta go back to it), and while it is a bit rough on the technical side, it's still amazing. A new one on Wii U could be even more so.

Silicon Knights making it is possible too, when they commented on making a game for the next generation in November I immediately thought ED 2 on Wii U (especially as they wouldn't have dev kits for the other consoles yet), but there are still some people referring to PS360 as next gen, and I'm not sure Nintendo would work with them on it seeing as they own the IP and SK hasn't made anything of quality in quite a while (though that could be remedied if it's a collaboration, much the same way as Next Level Games making great games pretty much only when they work with Nintendo).

Yeah its been pretty obvious with the massive Wii droughts in 2011 and this year. With Iwata constantly mentioning that they have learned their lesson from the 3ds launch, they just have to have some heavy hitters ready for Wii U launch.

Exactly, and Nintendo's silence just makes it more exciting. Above all I hope we get a glimpse of EAD Tokyo's next Mario game on Wii U, and maybe even a CG Smash Bros trailer that shows some new characters, the latter is unlikely though. But outside of the stuff you mentioned there's still the possibility of Monster's game, Good Feel's game, WarioWare maybe, all the Wii__ games, Monolith's game, yeah it's certainly gonna be a good E3 for Nintendo.

Why wouldn't they let their other, semi-owned studio, Silicon Knights, make another ED instead?

You're very confused. Nintendo has no shares in Silicon Knights, no (current) second party agreement, no special relationship. Hence why Silicon Knights has been developing stuff for the competition this entire past generation.

Retro Studios is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo, it is just as much a part of Nintendo as EAD.

I thought they still owned like 10% of it? Not sure though...

Either way it's probably not a good idea to let Silicon Knights as they are now make it, since Nintendo owns the IP there is no reason to give it to the D-team that is SK.

With Nintendo looking over their shoulder I think it would turn out alright. Their central management has a way of keeping things on the right track.

Yeah like I mentioned above with the comparison to the way they work with Next Level Games who basically only make licensed crap outside of their Nintendo games, I just think it would be better to let Retro go crazy with a horror game. Their existing art team along with these new employees would be great for that, the atmosphere would be amazing. Also I think Kenji Yamamoto could make a sweet horror soundtrack.

Not only is that out of date, but it wouldn't change the fact that Retro is not "semi-owned" and its relationship with Nintendo has essentially nothing in common with Silicon Knights.

I didn't particularly want to say that, sorry. I know that Retro is fully owned by Nintendo. It should've been clear though that this wasn't even the point I was making...
Still, you are wrong in saying that Nintendo has no shares in SK when they have a considerable stake, you can verify that by looking at the annual report of the past few years. I only linked to the 2010 report as they are not directly named in 2011, they are just something like "and two other foreign firms" or so. So please abstain from posting false information in the future if you are not really sure about it.

Why are you guys arguing about how much Nintendo owns in what? It doesn't matter, would any of us prefer SK making ED 2 as opposed to Retro?

You first. There's no other way to read "their other semi-owned studio". You thought Retro was a second party.

I see it's badly worded but I'm not an idiot, sorry.

Then how are you so sure those assets have not been sold?

Of course, they could've sold their stake since March 2011 when the last annual report was published. But how likely is that if they haven't done anything in the past 5 years and nobody's willing to buy SK assets right now?

If you preach absolute certainty, you should practice it as well.

Ignis Fatuus, please stop. If there's anyone on this board who knows his shit about Retro, it's Shiggy.

I hope not. Those Star Fox characters were so out of place in Star Fox adventures. It would be a phenomenal waste of talent.

Anyway I dont see all the fuss with this series. Fox Mcloud is Nintendo's worst designed character, worse than Tingle. He is totally awkward. The series is also grossly over rated, the last good game was Star Fox 64 - and you could clock that game in under an hour easily. Gameplay wise the series pales in comparison to serious arcade shooters like Ikaruga and Bangai-O. Heck even all the Rogue Squadron game series were better!

pretty much. it gets a lot of talk because it's a nintendo franchise.

If there ever was a sequel or if nintendo fans really wanted one i don't know why they wouldn't want treasure handling it.

Star Fox isn't about beating the game, it's all about score attack runs and earning the gold medals.

Retro should do something bigger than Star Fox anyway. If Nintendo is interested in a new Star Fox game, Treasure and Platinum Games are, by far, the best choices.
