So what should I do? He just gave me the links and I'll be seeing him in person on friday. Should I read the first two volumes? Compromise with 1 volume and tell him I didn't have time to read the second? Dont read it at all? Just watch the anime?
I recently befriended a classmate in my evening class. It turns out he is really into anime which is ironic since he isnt the other classmate wearing eureka seven tshirts. After class, he asked me with the usual " you watch anime? What have you watched?" questions. I told him i was currently watching Another. He mentions he is watching High School DxD. At the time, i didn't realize that it was the show yall posted gifs of strippers dancing. Suddenly, he goes into a 5 minute long speech about the show. I didn't even say anything, just remained silent and paid attention.
Spoilers for safety (Stuff mentioned might go beyond the anime)
He starts with a summary. Main character is a kid named Issei who dies and is reborned as a servant of a hot devil girl named Rias (had to checked wiki for that spelling lol).
Already my mind is thinking "...this is a harem show aint it?"
Issei's goal is to become a strong devil and create his own harem of female servants (Yep harem show).
He discovers that he has the power of the Red Dragon, which doubles his strength every 10 seconds and covers him in armor. A lot of girls start falling for him and he gets stronger and stronger.
His favorite moment is when Issei goes berserk and in order to calm him, a song called Oppai Dragon was played. The song later becomes a popular children's song (lolwhat?)
*blah blah blah*
He tells me that everything he said came from the light novels. The anime only covers the first 2 volumes of 11. He said about half of the novels have been translated and asked if I was interested in reading it. I just stared at him and gave a meek "maybe". He promised me to message the links to where I can start reading and reassures me that the novels are fun reads and better than the anime. He recommended to read the first two novels to see if im into it.

He went through the trouble of sending me 6-7 links for me. I dont want to be a dick but if animegaf tells me this is absolutely nothing I want to do with, I will avoid reading/watching it.
I wouldn't mind giving yall impressions of the novels if you give the green light
Liking the anime so far. Not loving it, but it has its moments of both cute and badass. Ton of unnecessary fanservice though (including an uncensored dong that was somehow snuck in), but that's kind of expected.
I really hate people who shove things into your hands and expect you to like read them and shit. Make recommendations and move on and if they do it be pleasantly surprised, but please don't be pushy.
/stares at The Pale King sitting half-read on the bookshelf
It's pulpy and dumb but it does enough right to be enjoyable, especially in comparison to other trashy shows. It gives me weird Golden Boy vibes, although I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't actively seek it out.
Sounds like he's one of those fans. Once they know you like "anime"(even if your tastes are completely different), they will never, ever leave you alone.
Do a compromise and read the manga instead. There is like 10 chapters out so far and they are really not that long to read. This way you make it seem like you gave a damn to check out the series, but you wouldn't invest as much time as reading the light novels.
Bocca leveled up (yay!) against a boomerang wielding guy on a skateboard (boo!)
Yami 8
Surpisingly fun episode which was not something I expected after the most recent snorefests. I enjoyed this book world's aesthetic army of ninja chicks aside.
Super Robot Wars OG - The Inspector 11
More delicious fan pandering. Need more Ratsel & Sanger though.
Think I'm putting Glass Fleet on hold as I slowly crack and decide to order the dvds rather than using Hulu.
In the future, presidential debates will be presented in a tiny box on the middle of your TV screen, interrupting your soap opera kiss. They will be a mandatory overlay on top of all TV programming across all channels. The debates themselves won't even pretend to be about "issues" but will cut straight to the chase of name-calling and mud-slinging.
Truly Dirty Pair presents a frightening vision of a dystopian future from which our society should learn before it's too late.
I'm watching Dirty Pair as well right now, pretty awesome show. The situations these girls get into are so ridiculous, and the banter between them is so great. Mughi is the best pet ever, hell even the robot has his moments too.

Electronic Warfare the Electronic Warfare: Electronic Warfare with Electronic Warfare Edition - Did you know this show has Electronic Warfare?: The Return of Electronic Warfare Part 05
That was a really anti-climatic space "battle". They spent almost the whole episode explaining the dummy system getting hacked even though they spent like 5-10 minutes last episode doing the exact same thing and explaining how it works, the purpose of one, and how it will function in practice when the enemy goes against them. Also, I didn't like the plot-hole and resolution with how the enemy was supposed to be unprepared against any of the capabilities of the Odette II. They knew who was on it, the fact that the ship is one of the original seven, and how attempts have failed against it before and also
"Oh also that's right, remember i'm a pirate daughter and that's my ship so it was just a test all along to see how you are future captain is why I am here heh, heh, heh."
It felt like that alone completely rendered everything done in the previous episodes useless, and that they could've easily compacted everything in this first arc into one episode, and then built up the explanations and cast into the movement of the story and visuals instead of stopping to explain it all.
Anyways, next week will have more Chiaki Omigawa so I can rest easy.
Wait why did he try to use Mudo if he wanted to slow him down? Mudo is an instant-death spell. Okay forget it he started summoning Beelzebub this cartoon is fucking amazing.
lol video game logicks. Shoji Meguro is still the grand star of this constellation. Or rather, a nebula of farts. There were some serious CLAMP proportions going around in this episode, not to mention the total lack of subtlety with the character pieces. Kanji fawning over Naoto was very tastefully done in the game, whereas here it is totally played for the lulz in the anime.
Sidenote: Oh my fucking God theanimenetwork's player sucks balls.
Recorder and Ransell 05: Maybe the problem here was hiring big-breasted instructors? Distractions are bound to occur
I don't think the jokes work, or have ever worked. I am not sure why I ever kept up with this show, if you can call it that. It's honestly a waste of time. DROPPED
Senki Zesshou Symphogear 05: I love it when the Engrish doesn't match the subtitles. Is this the stereotypical Japanese cartoon? Lolis, outrageous action, stupid dialogue, manipulation up the wazoo, gratuitous nudity, YURI, and bad animation. It even had glorious shounen no haato. In fact, the only thing missing are mecha. Or do the armours count as mecha?
It's a shame this show simply doesn't work when there's nothing outrageous happening, be it sentimental character drama, technobabble, or just exposition. And when huge portions of every episode are just that it's beyond boring. We are talking about an anime about singers in Mega Man outfits fighting Kingdom Hearts enemies, ffs; stop trying to give it some sense of realism.
The Knight in the Area 05: I used to play as a goalkeeper when I was in middle school. I wasn't very good, and to be honest there were many times when I wished I were benched instead of playing. Even so, I had dreams regarding football. I wanted to be part of the national team and win the World Cup, too! So when the Fun Club were all like "YO DAWG WE GONNA BEAT BRAZIL IN THE WORLD CUP FINAL FUCK YEAH" I had a huge nostalgia attack.
The worst part about sports anime tends to be the non-sports stuff (karuta doesn't count as a sport), but I'll be damned if I am not enjoying Kakeru and Seven bouncing off every other character. Seven in particular is as cute as a button:
Watashi no Chiisana Uma: Yujo no Mahou Desu 42: Tomboy tsunderes are the worst. Yet I still loved this episode. They took a character archetype that I am not very fond of and translated it into an appropriate setting -in this case action adventure serials. It made for an enjoyable episode despite focusing on my most disliked character.
anime of the fucking forever holy fucking shit look at the little kitties goddamn they are meowing and doing adorable stuff what the fuck is wrong with you people
So the only shows I'm still keeping up with from this season are:
Rinne no Lagrange
Aquarion Evol
Nichibros
Another
And two of those I'm only watching ironically. Add to that a waning Chihayafuru and freakin' Guilty Crown and this season just keeps looking more and more miserable.
I have to agree with this sentiment, but even then there's stuff to be liked. After watching so much anime you get to appreciate some of its "badness" almost intrinsically.
I decided to watch the second half of episode 4 after the outrage last week and I was honestly impressed with the use of music. I can't imagine (nor want to) how awful the soundtrack must have got for you to claim this.
This is the show that I thought Madoka would be. The violence is a bit gratuitous at times(there's been a few censored parts that didn't even need to be there in the first place), and it's kind of silly that almost every fight ends with "you thought you had me but I in fact have you!" but I suppose those both come with the territory. On the other hand, I don't think my heart will ever be able to handle Saya's singing.
Now, while it's pretty clear that these birds-eye view shots and extreme long-shots are being used to avoid having to do lots of complicated animation work, I feel that they're having an unintended consequence on the show.
Most shows that use cost-cutting measures, Bakemonogatari included, tend to get around all the tricky business of facial animation by shooting from behind a characters head, or blocking a characters mouth with some object so they don't have to draw in (or repeat) the movement. However, Nisemonogatari favours extreme-long shots, and birds-eye perspective shots, for whatever reason. I can only theorize that they want to save money, but they don't want to be 'seen' saving money using the traditional shot types, so instead they're opting to use these more 'interesting' shots.
However, the problem with using, say, a long-shot is that in the visual language of film when we (as in the audience) are distanced from a character like this we don't feel engaged with their story, their character, who they're talking to etc. You use long-shots to literally distance the audience from the target, it's a piece of cinematography that's meant to make you feel distant from what's been portrayed on screen, where as a close-up or POV shot is used to make you feel closer to something that's happening on screen. The upshot of all this is - the repeated use of the long-shot in Nisemonogatari is repeatedly distancing the viewers from the characters, when actually the director should be trying to bring us closer to them. Whoops.
Animegaf is always amazed when Totoro shows up in the rankings at a million sold but apparently that's not the most amazing thing about Ghibli. According to that graph, Totoro might have sold a million but Spirited Away is at 4 million copies sold. Neither of them have BD releases yet. That is unbelievable.

I'm specifically reffering to episode 2 and the start of episode 5. The use of music in episode 2 was pretty bad overall, where as in episode 5 it was just the beginning of the 'Kaiki' sequence that annoyed me. I don't think a 'fast' version of Kaiki's theme works very well.

I'm glad people are experiencing the greatness that is Dirty Pair. I think that most people who take a quick glance at the art of the show today might be inclined to think that it's going to be some kind of terrible fanservice show headed up by a couple of non-characters who exist simply to interest the audience by wearing skimpy outfits, or something. Surprisingly (?) Yuri and Kei are pretty good characters that are well matched to the kind of show that they're in. It wouldn't really be anywhere near as fun without them.

It's an expanded and much better telling of the events of the first two episodes. I'd start the series with My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars, then Overture of a New War, then episode 3 of the OVA.
Yeah, this is what I did when I did my RTTP recently. My Conquest is not 100% necessary though. Overture instead of the first 2 episodes is a great substitute though.
edit: Miri. I'm sure you don't do this but do not, under any circumstances, check out the "Next Time on" bits at the end of each episode. Similarly, avoid reading the title of episodes. There can be massive spoilers in both. There are no codas in LoGH and at most, the end credits will roll OVER ongoing footage (something I really enjoyed about LoGH). Once those credits disappear and they reveal the name of the episode (always at the end of each episode , unless I'm mistaken), MOVE ON. Haha.

Yeah, this is fairly sage advice. Of course, this applies to lots of other shows as well, but with LOGH you really don't want them spoiling the most important part of the next episode for you.
