Nothing crazy but for casual gamer is more than enough

I have this stick and I love it. Got it off of a nice kid via Craigslist for ~$80 - best purchase I've made in a while.
Cosmetically I put a Seimitsu white bubble top, and today the octagonal gate arrives. From what I've seen on this thread it should be pretty easy to switch the gates.
Any tips for someone who's never opened a stick before? Thanks!
I posted the weights of the arcade sticks the other day for reference.
The new Hori stick is 7 lbs.
The Mad Catz TE sticks are 6.4 lbs.
The Mad Catz V.S. sticks are 7.4 lbs.

It is a super cool stick. I've actually grown quite fond of that old Hori casing. Nice and streamlined. The Viewlix style has too many sharp angles.
As for tips: Don't break anything.
But seriously, I've never opened that stick before, but from what I hear to get to the guts of this one you want to remove the TOP panel, not the bottom.
"Man getting a custom stick made is sooo expensive. It'll totally be worth it in the end though! Can't wait to possibly show it off when I'm done!"
The worst part isn't even the price for me (though that's a tough pill to swallow, of course), but the wait.
Ok - that took all of 45 seconds to do. The gate is just clipped under the JLF enclosure. That was the easiest thing in the world.

hey guys, can you point me to a PCB that I can install in my 360 TE stick so that I can use it on my PS3? It can be either soldered or solderless. I can handle either, though solderless would save me some time if the option exists.
thanks!
Have you checked the shipping for the Qanba? I was going to buy that myself but apparently it costs $70 to ship it from Hong Kong to New Jersey D:
360 TE Kitty from toodles. It's solderless.

Nicely done. (Though obligatory boothisman.gif for octo gate.)
Qanbas are available at Arcadeshock.com for a better shipping cost. Dunno how good they are now, but I got my hrap3 from them in 08 and they were pretty fast.
Square gate is best gate. But whatever works for you man.
I'm actually curious about octo-gate. Since I don't play charge, I'd probably benefit from using an octo. Too lazy to order one though =P
I have no problem with the square gate when i'm playing guile, but i want to try out the octagonal gate for shoto characters.
From the 2p side i have no issues. From 1p it just feels strange - i think i'm doing the exact same motion but it's not picking up the diagonal. If that means i need an octagonal gate and i have to ride the gate from the 1p side then so be it. I've had more than enough practice with the square gate.
And hey, if it doesn't work out - i'll just go back to pad warrior status.
Haha why octogate hate? I just tried playing KoF13, and I can actually PLAY it now! All the combos are 100x easier. I am in heaven with this mod
Personally, I feel that if you're riding the gate, you're doing it wrong. The art of using a stick is to develop enough control to just throw the lever enough to activate the switch, and press the button to pull off the special move. A rounded gate seems like a crutch, especially with fireball type motions. The shoryuken is the move that explains it perfectly, I find:

That last stop, the diagonal, is hard to achieve with anything but a square gate.
I actually tried an octo gate on my Tatsunoko VS Capcom stick, after using it for weeks with a stock LS-32, and I felt constricted in my motions. "To each his own" definitely applies here though, and you can probably kick my ass at KOF, so don't think I'm trying to be preachy here. The important part here is that you made your arcade stick your own.

Yeah this is one of the sticking points that I have with an octo. I'll have to try it out for myself, but I can imagine how weird it would be to try to hit the diagonals. Isn't that the reason why charge character's can't be played on octo?

It's not really a big deal as long as you're not going to try to get by borrowing other people's controllers at events. After all, not only are there no arcades outside Japan, but an octo-gate probably feels "closer" to American-style's circle-gate anyway.Beyond all the technical pitfalls posted above, I don't know of any arcade owner that puts octo gates in their sticks. Getting used to an octo gate is a pretty good way of making sure your skills never translate into other people's equipment.
+1 on the square gate.
dunno about 3D games, though. I hear Octagonal is better for them.

I've been looking around for a stick over the last few weeks since a few guys at work have been hanging out after work once in a while to play some fighting games.
So I ordered a WWE Brawl Stick for $50 from NCIX (Canada) on Monday night. Was going to post about it yesterday but found out that the sale had ended by that point. From what I understand its a good stick and at that price it was a great deal. Its back to $100 now though.
Whats funny is that I was looking at getting an SF4 SE stick for $50 because a bunch of local EB Games had them in stock according to the web site. Apparently the website was wrong as I visited one of the EBs and their staff told me the website had some sync issue and they sold out when the Sticks were first released. I got into a conversation with them and I stated that I'd never buy an arcade stick for more than $80. Their reaction was I'd never be able to get an arcade stick worth getting for that much. Hopefully, they were wrong
Now I have two Mad Catz sticks (one is an MvC2 TE stick which I got on sale a few years back for around $85) and the MK PDP Klassic Fight Stick (another one which I recently got on sale for $80). Not really sure why I got the MK stick-- I guess I felt as though I'd regret it if I never got it. But now I feel like I need to get a second one just to be a completionist even though I know the one I have now will barely get used let alone a second one.
After all, not only are there no arcades outside Japan.
Curses! I'm trying to score one for a good price myself.
The problem with getting an ~$80 stick is that you'll have to spend another ~$35 to bring it up to arcade spec. ($~25 for joystick lever, ~$12 for six buttons.)
