Nothing crazy but for casual gamer is more than enough :)

I have this stick and I love it. Got it off of a nice kid via Craigslist for ~$80 - best purchase I've made in a while.

Cosmetically I put a Seimitsu white bubble top, and today the octagonal gate arrives. From what I've seen on this thread it should be pretty easy to switch the gates.

Any tips for someone who's never opened a stick before? Thanks!

It is a super cool stick. I've actually grown quite fond of that old Hori casing. Nice and streamlined. The Viewlix style has too many sharp angles.

As for tips: Don't break anything. :P

But seriously, I've never opened that stick before, but from what I hear to get to the guts of this one you want to remove the TOP panel, not the bottom.

Man getting a custom stick made is sooo expensive. It'll totally be worth it in the end though! Can't wait to possibly show it off when I'm done!

The worst part isn't even the price for me (though that's a tough pill to swallow, of course), but the wait.

Yeah, one of the reasons the HRAP 3-SA is supposedly very easy to mod. I found an old allen wrench and I'm about to start!

Didn't you go with Nitewalker? I'm planning on getting a widebody from him. His cases look pretty good and he seems like a really cool chap too. How long do you have on your stick?

Ok - that took all of 45 seconds to do. The gate is just clipped under the JLF enclosure. That was the easiest thing in the world.

Yeah, I did. I'm getting his standard slim size, he's been a pretty great guy to deal with. I've been waiting about a week and a half so far, not really sure how much longer it'll take, though.

"Week and a half is nothing, I had two wait over two months for mine :D"

Yeah, I know the wait on some are really long. I'm too impatient for something like that.

Nicely done. (Though obligatory boothisman.gif for octo gate.)

Makes sense though. I would have thought the prices were really high until I actually built my own custom stick. It turned out really well. But parts are expensive, material costs really add up, and even basic designs take a lot of finish time and electronics work. I'm sure you can streamline things quite a bit if you are building multiples. But if you are not cranking them off an assembly line they are a pretty expensive piece of work.

hey guys, can you point me to a PCB that I can install in my 360 TE stick so that I can use it on my PS3? It can be either soldered or solderless. I can handle either, though solderless would save me some time if the option exists.

thanks!

Qanbas are available at Arcadeshock.com for a better shipping cost. Dunno how good they are now, but I got my hrap3 from them in 08 and they were pretty fast.

Pretty similar, I ordered my Ice Blue Q4 yesterday from Play-Asia and after shipping it came to 198 with 3 day FedEx shipping

I'm actually curious about octo-gate. Since I don't play charge, I'd probably benefit from using an octo. Too lazy to order one though =P

EDIT: I just realized that canadianjoysticks.com is on location at Magic Stronghold every Wednesday, so I can actually just pick one of these guys up for $5 with no shipping. Guess I'm gonna be getting one soon!

Quick question for everyone here:

In a product review for an arcade stick, what information would you like to see covered?

I know what I'd like to see addressed, but I'd like to know what other people look for when making their stick purchasing decisions. I think I'm going to post a review of the Mad Catz Soul Edition stick this week on my website, so it'd be nice to see if there's anything I hadn't thought of.

Square gate is best gate. But whatever works for you man.

How so? I've used square gate since I started using sticks, but I've always had a theory that the give on an octagonal gate would allow for easier move input (especially for KoF, with the quarter-into-halfcircle moves)

Even with charge characters, the gate works beautifully because it allows for combo chaining into charging uppers very, very easily. I was just using Terry and Ash in KoF13 and I pulled off combo links into charging supers without breaking a sweat. I was damn pleased.

I ordered mine from LizardLick on Thursday, and it got to NYC this morning. $6 shipped.

I think the consensus is that square is theoretically the best gate because of the freedom of movement. If someone performs better and feels more comfortable with octo or circle, it's hard to argue.

I have no problem with the square gate when i'm playing guile, but i want to try out the octagonal gate for shoto characters.

From the 2p side i have no issues. From 1p it just feels strange - i think i'm doing the exact same motion but it's not picking up the diagonal. If that means i need an octagonal gate and i have to ride the gate from the 1p side then so be it. I've had more than enough practice with the square gate.

And hey, if it doesn't work out - i'll just go back to pad warrior status.

I think you'll be surprised at how smooth the stick rolls in either direction when you're chaining combos.

Edit: Speaking of Guile, I was making room in my cabinet for the stick and found this. Apparently it's worth some money

Haha why octogate hate? I just tried playing KoF13, and I can actually PLAY it now! All the combos are 100x easier. I am in heaven with this mod

Personally, I feel that if you're riding the gate, you're doing it wrong. The art of using a stick is to develop enough control to just throw the lever enough to activate the switch, and press the button to pull off the special move. A rounded gate seems like a crutch, especially with fireball type motions. The shoryuken is the move that explains it perfectly, I find:

That last stop, the diagonal, is hard to achieve with anything but a square gate.

I actually tried an octo gate on my Tatsunoko VS Capcom stick, after using it for weeks with a stock LS-32, and I felt constricted in my motions. "To each his own" definitely applies here though, and you can probably kick my ass at KOF, so don't think I'm trying to be preachy here. The important part here is that you made your arcade stick your own.

Awesome post - I never thought of it like that. Interesting perspective, I'll try to be more cognizant of that when I play SFIV next.
I was actually looking to get a cheap Tatsunoko stick for the Wii - Gamestop has them for an oddly low $20 new. I have a box of Sanwa buttons and another JLF square gate stick that I would drop in if I ever picked up the stick.
Speaking of which, are you on PSN? I'm itching to play more UMVC3, SFIV:AF, KoF13, etc.

Yeah this is one of the sticking points that I have with an octo. I'll have to try it out for myself, but I can imagine how weird it would be to try to hit the diagonals. Isn't that the reason why charge character's can't be played on octo?

The diagonals work well, the angles on the octo aren't so wide that you can't stop on a diagonal section. Like I said before, I was playing a few charging characters in KoF and I was pulling the moves off really well. Most fighting games are also pretty lenient about charging. For example, if you're crouch-attacking, you can be holding a down-diagonal as you're attacking and immediately swoop up for a charged super.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I found it to work very well.

I tried an octo gate once. I lasted a week. I just couldnt. I still cant really do reverse dragon punches consistantly and its frustrating but i could never do em period on an octo gate

I feel like my exclusivity towards using arcade sticks with fighting games is stopping me from even wanting to try UMVC3 on the Vita. I almost don't see the point in re-learning the buttons.

Got this stick in a trade to MarkMan. Modded it recently and here is the final result. 6 button black plexi from tek innovations, clear 31mm rim from tek, OSBC-Black buttons, and a new style black sanwa mesh ball. Dual-modded with a TE-Kitty.

I already have like 6 or 7 other sticks and felt like having something a bit classy this time around.

Beyond all the technical pitfalls posted above, I don't know of any arcade owner that puts octo gates in their sticks. Getting used to an octo gate is a pretty good way of making sure your skills never translate into other people's equipment.

It's not really a big deal as long as you're not going to try to get by borrowing other people's controllers at events. After all, not only are there no arcades outside Japan, but an octo-gate probably feels "closer" to American-style's circle-gate anyway.

Yeah I'm the only one of my friends who uses this type of equipment, so I'm not worried about standardizing my play style with an octo. Not really a tourney-goer either, tho seems like it might be fun

I've been looking around for a stick over the last few weeks since a few guys at work have been hanging out after work once in a while to play some fighting games.

So I ordered a WWE Brawl Stick for $50 from NCIX (Canada) on Monday night. Was going to post about it yesterday but found out that the sale had ended by that point. From what I understand its a good stick and at that price it was a great deal. Its back to $100 now though.

Whats funny is that I was looking at getting an SF4 SE stick for $50 because a bunch of local EB Games had them in stock according to the web site. Apparently the website was wrong as I visited one of the EBs and their staff told me the website had some sync issue and they sold out when the Sticks were first released. I got into a conversation with them and I stated that I'd never buy an arcade stick for more than $80. Their reaction was I'd never be able to get an arcade stick worth getting for that much. Hopefully, they were wrong :P

Now I have two Mad Catz sticks (one is an MvC2 TE stick which I got on sale a few years back for around $85) and the MK PDP Klassic Fight Stick (another one which I recently got on sale for $80). Not really sure why I got the MK stick-- I guess I felt as though I'd regret it if I never got it. But now I feel like I need to get a second one just to be a completionist even though I know the one I have now will barely get used let alone a second one.

+1 on the square gate.

dunno about 3D games, though. I hear Octagonal is better for them.

I would've agreed, but until I tried it with a few 2D brawlers I didn't know how much better it would feel. Obviously to each his own, and the gate swaps literally take 1-2 minutes.

I'm going to pick up a super cheap Tatsunoko Vs Capcom Wii stick NIB for $20 right now. If the buttons aren't great, I'll probably mod it with the seimitsu buttons and JLF stick I have leftover from my arcade stick parts. But considering how little play Tatsunoko gets compared to the other, it might not be worth all those expensive parts.

Curses! I'm trying to score one for a good price myself.

The problem with getting an ~$80 stick is that you'll have to spend another ~$35 to bring it up to arcade spec. ($~25 for joystick lever, ~$12 for six buttons.)

Tried my octagonal gate for a couple hours yesterday.

So far I haven't noticed too much difference, but I did have some trouble executing some of my normal inputs when I wasn't thinking about it. Probably to be expected when switching to a different gate for the first time. I do kinda like the feel a bit better, will just take some practice I think.

Gonna leave it in for a month or so, so that I can get a really good feel for it.

It's 60 on amazon right now (360)

Local used store has a Tatsunoku vs Capcom stick for $32. I've never considered buying one before, so I have no idea how hard those are to mod. People do mod those, right? What would I need?
