Any gun owners lurking...

This is not true. Unless you train with the shotgun extensively than it just is not true.

Shotguns are heavy, cumbersome, hard to clear a room with that much length, an intruder could grab the gun by the barrel when you come around a corner.

No one gives a rats ass about them "sounding" intimidating. To some criminals that could just make them try to kill you faster, since they now know you are armed. Please don't believe the wild west movies that one shot covers a whole room, the typical spread for 00buckshot is about 1 inch per ten feet. Pistols do take practice to be accurate, however, most shots in your house will be at less than 10-12 feet. You could hit something very easily at that range. A flashlight on the rail can cure the dark situation.

Please for the love of God, don't buy shells that are underpowered. We have the castle doctrine for a reason, if someone intrudes into your household then kill him. Plain and simple. Don't wound him or try to shoot him in the leg, he'll kill you pal. I bet he won't try to wound you.

I would go with a Glock 19 for home defense.

Also, I teach Concealed Carry classes, was in the military, teach tactical classes to private security firms, and shoot roughly 3-5k rounds a week. Just trying to let you know you can trust me and these opinions. Happy shooting, man.

I've owned many shotguns. I know all about their spread patterns and all that. An inch per ten feet? Maybe on a typical hunting shotgun but not on a home defense shotgun with a modified choke. The reason I suggested the Mossberg is because they typically come with a pistol grip you can install yourself, and with an 18.5 inch barrel they're not too long to be cumbersome. You have a good reason to use a pistol instead because of your training but he does not. He doesn't shoot thousands of rounds per week.

Also, castle doctrine doesn't apply in every state, and not everyone WANTS to kill an intruder regardless of their intentions. Have you killed someone in self-defense who entered onto your property? You can buy less than lethal rounds that will easily put someone down without killing them.

Beautiful, my dad has a glock too. If you're planning to shoot someone in public it probably isn't going to go down well in the end though; whether your life is threatened or not. Something like a taser or pepper spray would be better to carry around for protection. That's what I do, and I leave my shotgun at the house.

You are not helping, don't tell someone that has no experience shooting to put a pistol grip on their shotgun

lol, yeah do that so when someone pulls a gun on you, you can pepper spray them.

don't forget to bring a rape whistle too

You carry around a taser with you?

Someone pulls gun on you in public you should do exactly what they say. I don't imagine you'd have much of a chance with a gun on you if they've already got one pointed at you anyways.

You carry around a taser with you?

Sure, they're cheap and legal where I live.

Someone with no experience shooting shouldn't be using anything. Anyone who gets a weapon for self defense needs to get experience with it afterwards, there is no gun that is meant for or good for a person to buy and toss in a drawer as a self defense tool.

No weapon should ever be recommended to anyone as something good for a person with no experience and expect them to properly and safely use it.

What the heck did Manos do to get himself banned now?

I thought I got banned alot.

I can't imagine a situation where a gun would be pulled on me in public unless I was doing something to heighten that possibility.

The city I live in has been in the top 5 for homicides in the nation for the past 3 years. Muggings, robberies, home invasions, etc are very common here. Most of it happens in the "urban communities" but it is definitely starting to branch out to the middle class sections. Just two days ago they had a shooting outside at the mall at 7 o'clock. Two kids were hit on accident

See, if that was more of a daily, I might be more inclined to consider alternate options.

Currently, I live on the border of the gay/hip moneyed yuppie neighborhood. So, although there is a gang of trannies around the train stop, there really isn't much danger. At least nothing I can't easily avoid or keep myself out of.

In Colorado, I had a concealed carry permit, which was easy to get in that state. But I also lived next to one of the wealthiest counties in the US. So, no so much danger there either. I did keep a firearm in my car at the time though. My first purchase, H&K USP .40 Match, left handed. I have never seen another one.

Went out to some BLM land yesterday near Gardnerville, Nevada and did some birthday shooting. Had an assortment of firearms to have fun with. My XD45, XD9 sub, Mossberg 500 and Mini 14, my buddies brought their shotguns and a .30-06 Rifle (not sure of make or model). Plenty of ammo to go around for all of them as well. Finally was able to break in some 20 round mags for the mini 14 I had laying around forever. They worked quite well.

We had a nice spot that backed up to a hill with all kinds of targets that people had set up over the years. Brought some 2-liters to destroy as well as a few hundred clay pigeons and our trusty hand tossers. Definitely a target rich environment but freezing cold (28f) and windy. That weather certainly had an effect on our accuracy, I had no gloves so trying to squeeze the trigger sometimes was an effort in itself with popsicle hands.

Lots of fun to be had by all 4 of us that went though, I think we went through about 1,000 rounds between all the different calibers. Surely had the Eau De Gunpowder cologne going after we were done. There were a few personal highlights for myself that didn't really have to do with me hitting any good shots or anything amazing like that, oh no.

First, was this old man who was at the spot when we got there. He was probably in his late 60's, big beard, NRA hat and was just cleaning up the area and raking through the dirt for brass. Well, this gentlemen surely got more brass then he was expecting. When we were firing the Mini, the brass was kicking so far out, 20-30ft. I didn't realize it until I was told later, but apparently most of the brass kicked out ended up in the back of the old mans pickup, hell, I think a few hit him as well. Funny things about it were that he never did say anything about it, (maybe he was happy to get some free .223 brass) and also, I heard the brass hitting his truck, but I didn't realize it. I was firing at some 2 liters, and was hearing a metal pinging sound. Thinking, hey I am not hitting any metal targets, so WTF? It was the damn brass smashing into his truck, lol, so amazing. Gotta love how far that mini kicks that brass, I really need to look into getting a new extractor that doesn't do such hardcore extracting haha.

The second highlight of the day was firing that .30-06. First time for me and certainly the largest caliber I have fired outside my 12 gauge. I knew there would be some kick and some recoil, but nothing I couldn't handle right? Lol, wrong. My brother and his friends were dying laughing at how much that thing was beating me up. I was just doing some standing shots with it and man, did that thing beat my shoulder up. Finally, we decided to move our truck and lay the rifle on the truck bed to get a little bit of a rest to help out. Big mistake for me. I laid the rifle down, scoped in a 2-liter and pulled that trigger. Didn't hit shit but that scope sure came back into my face and busted my nose and my glasses, lol. Didn't break either of them but I had a nice big red mark on my nose and a nice mark on my glasses where the scope came back. After that, I was done with the .30-06 for the day. Everyone else wanted me to shoot it more just to laugh at me and the recoil devastation, but I had enough.

Other than that, I did hit a couple 2-liters that were about 100 and 150 yards out with the irons on my mini. Always love hitting some nice shots like that. My fail shot of the day was getting about 7ft from a empty beer bottle and failing to hit it with the 5 shots I had left in my 9m. That was quite embarrassing, so I showed that bottled who's boss and came back with a flurry of buckshot. Only malfunction of the day was with the 9mm, my brother had an FTE with it, but quickly cleared it and we had no problems after that. XD45 was smooth as always and the favorite of the group (always is). We also did smash all the clay pigeons and went through quite a few shotgun shells, I didn't end up scoring the most birds. My brothers friend did, he also had the best rifle shots of the day (lucky bastard).

Now I have to restock on ammo, always a fun time for my wallet. God I love to shoot though, it is just too much fun.

It's a good thing my cousin reloads his own stuff. Man I felt so bad going through his ammo even though I brought a measly $50 of handgun calibers to supplement his.

Can anyone think of a good reason to have a pistol as small as a Glock 26? No intention to CC or anything.

I think the fact I was offered a price of $200 is the only compelling reason.

Well, whatever then. Reach on those is only as long as your arm, though.

Not really, unless you just have the money to blow, although that is a great price. They are nice in that you can get 12 rounds in that with it being double stacked. Disadvantage if you are going to CC is that it is double stacked. I'd love to get a Glock subcompact if they ever make a single stacked version.

If you have big hands, that grip will be pretty tiny too.

Yeah, I think I'll pass on it.

$200 for a g26 is a steal of a deal. Even if you aren't CCing right now, you might in the future and getting a nice gun like that for cheap is something I wouldn't pass up. Even if you don't ever CC, small pistols are loads of fun. I love shooting my xd9sub and I don't CC, not yet anyways.

Though now that Springfield is coming out with the XDS, I want that much more than my XD9sub....

If you dont want it and are in California can I buy it?

Sorry :P I am pretty set on keeping all my firearms for just about ever. I might have my eye on that new XDS, but I doubt it will even be on sale in California for me to buy. The XDM's aren't and I don't see Springfield going out of their way to get the XDS listed on the pistol roster.

Anyone out here have any experience with a Browning HiPower? I've been eyeing it as a first gun and I think it looks beautiful and reading around the internet it seems to get a lot of praise. One thing that I keep reading about is the hammer bite which worries me a bit but many say you can buy hammers that alleviate the situation.

If I were to do this could I change the hammer myself or would this be something I would have to go to a gunsmith to do for me?

I have a sizable bonus coming next month. I would love to use it on a LMT Defender 16" AR. Now, only if I could launder the money so the wife wouldn't know about it, lol.

That's a good rifle, no doubt, but you could get something just as good for $1000-1200 if you look around, upper and lower separately is usually cheaper too. If I was dropping almost 2 grand on an AR, I'd probably look at LaRue.

I did a decent amount of research a while back. I've never owned, or known anyone that has owned, an AR. Actually I think my brother said he bought one but I haven't seen it. It looked like LMT, Colt and Bravo Co. made the best complete guns. I saw that it was cheaper to build one but I'm not sure if I'm up to that. I know it's not that difficult but at the same time I can have better peace of mind knowing a professional assembled it if I buy a complete gun.

edit, and I don't really need the MRP or SOPMOD stock...but I want it, lol.

LOL, that's the trouble with AR's, no one needs most of the stuff they have hanging off them :) And LMT is a great manufacturer, you shouldn't have any problems at all, they are just a bit expensive for what you get.

You might want to look at getting a lower and upper separately. The upper doesn't count as a firearm so you can order that online whenever you want. The lower is the part that is considered a firearm, they join with just a couple push pins that you disconnect for cleaning anyway.

But as I said, LMT are great, and for a first AR you can do a lot worse.

Just found this thread, good stuff.

I'm currently in the process of converting my Saiga 7.62x39 to an ak47.

Got a few other projects in the works as well.

I was at a gunshow and said a Saiga chambered in 7.62 for $400, was that a good price?

They can be had for $300 online (I bought mine online and paid that price)

So $400 isn't terrible, especially if the FFL transfer fees are very high in your area. Online will still likely be the cheaper route to go.

Glock 17 Gen4 vs. Glock 21 Gen4 for my first weapon?

I don't really plan on CCing so I'm kinda not thinking about the 19 and I held my friends and it was really small for hands like mine.

Waiting on some Mecgars for my new P229 SAS, but in the mean time, here's what I have for the most part:

dsc_0251-2u8zgi.jpg

.308 Surgeon RSR action
20" Hart heavy barrel
McMillan HTG stock
RifleBasix trigger
OD Kote'd metal
USO ST-10 glass

also have an LMT Ar15, Springfield Loaded 1911 (had it Kote'd black), Sig P226, and the new Sig P229 SAS.

Thinking of investing in a shotgun soonish, but unsure what I want just yet.

I bought it.

That is what I like to hear. $200 for a g26, you just can't go wrong. Now go get some 9mm FMJ's and start getting that lead out. To see how awesome your pistol is, watch these videos by Hickock45 and check out why the g26 is his favorite pistol (maybe yours soon enough as well....)

Hell, even if you don't like it, you could probably turn around and sell it for $350-400 depending on accessories/amount of mags you have for it.

That rifle is dead sexy. How far out have you shot with it? How far out do you want to shoot with it? :P. The rest of the collection sounds really nice as well. LMT makes awesome AR's, I really want to get one someday. 1911 and SIGS are also very sweet and you have some very fine shooting weapons. I can only imagine how smooth the action is on that .308....

The furthest I've taken it to was a hair over 1100yds while doing a course @ Thunder Ranch (Oregon); but usually it sees anywhere from 300-800yds.

And yea, the action is amazing. First time I've owned a Surgeon made action, and I'll definitely be a repeat customer at some point.

I love the G19, but only because I have small hands. The G17 felt too big in my hands.

You're torn between 45 or 9mm?

Have you shot both?

Yeah, definitely shoot both first so you can get an idea of comfort, trigger, etc. It shouldn't be too expensive to rent them at a range if you don't know someone with one.

My dad recently won a Ruger Blackhawk revolver in a raffle. Since he doesn't like pistols or revolvers, he asked me to find out how much he can resell it for. While trying to figure out how it works (these things are surprisingly simple), I popped out the cylinder. There's a rod that slides through the center of the cylinder, allowing the latter to spin. Now, I'll be damned if lining up this rod isn't a pain in the ass. I was never able to consistently reassemble the thing. Is this because the gun is new? I eventually discovered that rotating the cylinder while pushing the rod through it eased the process. But even then, it wasn't as effortless at in the videos I watched. My thumb is raw.

I think I'm gonna use my tax return to build an AR. Del-ton is having a groupbuy on their upper receivers for $400. And I can't afford BCM and those other upper echelon brands.

DelTon do pretty good work these days, they have made some serious leaps in quality over the years. When I get back to the US I am going to grab a couple of their lowers I think.

What sort of budget are you looking at total? What do you want to do with it?

Any good places that have a good variety of gun cabinets online? No one in South Florida seems to sell them, only safes and I rather have something nice looking in the house rather than a big ole safe. Want to find something that will match the rest of the furniture as well so need something with lot of options.

I have to say after playing so many WWII games I must get a M1 Garand sometime in my life
M1Rifle.jpg

I remember when these used to go for just $100 back in the early 90s. Now, you can't find one in decent condition for under $1,000.

CZ 2075 Rami. Opinions?

CZ-2075-Rami-9mm-with-10-Rd-Magazine.jpg

I'm thinking of selling my Glock 23 3rd Gen for one of these in 40 S&W. Should basically be a CZ 75 but smaller.
Always been curious about them myself, never tried one out though.

Th AR is just gonna be taken to the range to shoot paper zombies. I live in CA so I'm limited severely as to what I have access to. I think I'll have a budget of about $800.
