I'm actually an equal opportunity kind of guy - Zeta Gundam and Gundam 0083 both suck immensely.
It's harder to say which one I dislike more - Zeta Gundam goes on far longer than 0083 but I don't actively hate it, I just think it's a bad show with terrible writing and loathable characters. 0083, on the other hand, wanted to make me throw things out of a window.

Mirai Nikki 18 was better again, phew. Yuna's starting to become an actual character, and Yukki is a whiny bitch who refuses to think about anything yet again, but at least they didn't kill off really cool characters this time.
Now that everything has been laid on the table I can only see the show improving from here, which the latest pics seem to suggest.
I'm not sure if I should watch this since I don't actually like horror, but damn if eyepatch girl isn't making me HNNNNG.

Yup, I was right. This episode WAS something of a slight disappointment.
Now that Luscinia, the eyepatched Super-Aryan Sky Nazi is a pariah, The Evil Federation is now suddenly the Good Guys trying to unite the world under diplomacy and peace and everyone has just suddenly forgotten that all the wartime atrocities committed by Luscinia were for the most part okay'd by the Loli Fuhrer (after being spun and explained to her as the best possible option). In order to stay just a bit sane, I like to imagine that Vasant, the new tongue whispering into the ear of the throne, is only doing so now because the only nation that she WOULDN'T have been able to ally, The Sky Russians, with is now completely destroyed and the survivors chomping at the bit for some revenge. Awfully convenient for her to suddenly have a change of heart about this brutal campaign and call her eye-patched colleague a genocidal maniac (which they all are, btw). I'm kind of hoping for a double-twist here with Vasant being the TRUE maniac bent on world domination, but through a soft hand and a forked tongue. They sure aren't going to save the show on their direction and production, both of which were pretty sloppy this episode. But hey, what can I say, Gonzo...

Well, it doesn't specifically need to be an anime to engender feelings of anger inside me - it could be anything. In this particular case I found the characters to aggravating terrible people who did thoroughly bizarre and annoying things which no-one else on the show picked up on because they were also terrible people. This, coupled with the fact that the plot itself was an insult to the intelligence of the viewer made me extremely displeased.

Surely you can appreciate the brilliant animation in 0083? Can't think of much to say about Zeta if you didn't like the writing and characters.
Gundam fans are a strange bunch though, nobody ever really agrees. I don't like Char's Counterattack, for example and I'm fairly sure I'd be burned at the stake for such heresy on many parts of the internet. Oddly enough though, I don't mind F91 at all.
Perhaps we can put aside our differences and hate on ZZ, SEED Destiny, 00 Movie and maybe even V Gundam (really not sure how I feel about it to this day)?

What Gundam 00 movie?
It's pretty telling when you actually WANT Tomino back for a gundam series. ZZ was just awful. I can't blame them for the retcon in the Z compilation movies.

While the second season was pretty weak, the movie was a pile of "what in the fuck?!". It's also one of the biggest troll movie tie-ins.

There is no correlation between the quality of a season and the speed of the thread silly.
Reflecting on it, there is one thing that Milos does that I don't really remember much in the actual series,
and that's the sort of mirrored versions of Ed and Al. The new girl and her brother run parallel to the Elric brothers, but because the movie hides away one of the siblings until a twist at the end it doesn't feel like that stuff ever really develops into something more important. It would have been cool for the movie to play up how much like the Elric brothers these new characters were. What little there is towards the end is pretty neat, but without it being properly built up it doesn't have the impact it should.
Yeah, the political climate is one of the things that helps really cement how well established the setting here is. It feels like it has an appropriate amount of backstory, a lot of logistical design elements that show how the city works, and that political unrest which creates a good atmosphere for the current state of the location. It's too bad that stuff has to take a backseat to familiar Fullmetal antics because the sense of place is so well constructed, but it feels like the people of it as a whole are somewhat pushed off to the side.
I never watched Conqueror of Shamballa. Should probably scrub up a copy and give it a watch just as a note of comparison.
It was probably rash of me to say it wasn't memorable. I think I was more just focused on the narrative when I was thinking that. There is a lot of imagery from the movie that will stick with me, but it doesn't exactly feel as substantial with a story I feel has been told time and time over in this very universe.
Well at least they're good for something.
Truthfully I have awful eyesight without contacts or glasses. Like "I can't make out stuff 2.5 feet in front of me or so"-bad.
If anything it's an inverse relationship.

Me too. All I've seen is the parody scene at the beginning, but I'm told that's the best part anyway.
When I first saw Milos last year, the story moment which really impressed me as a FMA was how they tackled a plot revelation late in the movie.
The entire mystery why the city was built the way it was, and what purpose the towers served was pretty neat because I kept expecting that there was going to be some sort of alchemy array over the top of the city which had yet to be built, or each tower would have its own smaller array somewhere inside it to create a bigger circle.
What I did NOT expect was that the entire city was a 3D alchemy array meant to surround the entire hill. It's a really novel concept which plays on something which makes perfect sense in the FMA world but was somehow never used in any previous story. This "new" form of thinking with regards to how to apply alchemy also tied in very nicely with the movie's theme of making the scale "wider" because it gave extra dimension and space to how alchemy could be applied over an area.
That was a really nice plot twist imo, and one of the few plot twists in the movie which actually made sense. The other one which made perfect sense and was well established is the reall identity of Voyager. I thought it was a really nice touch to deliberately write and direct his flashback scenes to be inconsistent and different from what we already know about Julia's childhood from previous flashbacks. They planned for that twist really well.
The rest of the twists at the end were really awful though. It was like watching Mission Impossible 2 at times. Lol.

Cowboy Bebop Episodes 23-26
Really enjoyed these last four episodes and while the ending was pretty powerful I had a few problems with it. It may just be me but the last two episodes didnt really seem to fit the tone of the series. For the most part Cowboy Bebop was pretty light hearted and comical. All around a good series and I can see why people hold it in such high esteem.

Well, you can still enjoy something based on that alone. I have friends who aren't especially interested in characters and dialogue but instead watch Gundam for well...Gundams. The mecha designs and battles in 0083 are really top drawer and it has quite a good soundtrack too.
I'd say it was a worthy bridge between 0079 and Zeta, but then you didn't much like the latter either, eh? What was your opinion on the original series?

You know, while that's generally the response that people give, I don't really know if it's the best place to start. I mean sure, if you're planning to watch a lot of UC you need to get the lore down pat, but those three movies are still problematic in places.
I'd rather people start with something like War in the Pocket, which is legitimately good all the way through, but that would give people an incorrect impression about what Gundam is usually like. At leas the original three movies inform the viewers about Gundams many flaws as a franchise.
While I do agree it's bad, I'd still rate it above 00S2, strictly for the animation and the Gundam designs. The second season of 00 had atrocious animation and sloppy mech designs, a shame, really, because I thought the first season was pretty good.
Just finished the series recently, so it's all pretty fresh.
The movie doesn't have better animation than 00 S2 at all. At least in S2 there were some well animated fights between robots, and the final battle was pretty cool. The movie has basically no fights between robots, and is filled with beam spam against CG liquid metal aliens which barely have any "design" at all. How can anyone find that remotely entertaining for a Gundam film?
Yeah, there was no robot vs. robot action, but still, the animation in S2 was barely there, the mechs were ugly as hell, so I really didn't enjoy watching them, the three main Gundams beside 00 had uninspired designs, no detail at all, and I have no idea how they're different from the ones in S1, beside the fact that they look worse and don't have clearly defined functions in battle.
After watching S2, the movie was pure eyecandy to me, even the CG couldn't ruin that.

The way Oshii shoots his cities is god-damn amazing. It's quite hard to put a finger on what particular aspects of his direction (besides the beautiful cinematography) makes his city-shots feel so real and alive, but it's something you can track throughout all his works. There's even some scenes in the Urusei Yatsura TV show where he does nothing but show various city scenes for 2 minutes straight. Perhaps that's the thing that makes them work - he really lets his scenes breathe.
Some directors might consider such sequences 'wasted film' because nothing happens with the plot or character - but the way they create a sense of place ground the movie in a believable reality which makes everything else that takes place feel more real.
Only horror element is the atmosphere... and the dolls other than that the deaths are like an extremely toned down Blood-C with proper camera angle censorship.
I'd say it leans alot more to being a mystery than what it's trying to be as a horror.
Well I completely disagree. The mechs in the movie are just as ugly if not uglier than 00 S2, and they ALSO have no detail at all, which is shameful considering it is a movie and not a TV series. There is no robot action, there is no eye candy, the character animation was just as terrible as the TV series, the enemies were all generic copied and pasted CG designs. I'm sorry, but there's really nothing there. The script sucked, the animation sucked, the art sucked, the action sucked. There is literally nothing good about the 00 movie at all. Nothing.
I should watch Honneamise, because I don't really respect much of what they've made.
It won't help you respect anything else they've made, but it'll at least open your eyes to the true potential the Gainax staff has, if they didn't sell out to fame and fortune instead.

I was less impressed by the production values this time - they're not bad but not that special either - but I was even more impressed by Tomokazu Sugita's voice acting, which is what I feel carries this episode. We spend most of the time inside his character's head, with extensive inner monologue, and his voice is what makes him a believable character. You can hear the complexity of his emotions and how deeply the events that take place affect him. Sugita is mostly known as a comedic actor, for good reason, but when he needs to sell an extremely serious situation he can knock it out of the park.

There's really so much to say about the Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise that I could write about it all day. That's not to say that it's my favourite anime film or anything - in fact, to this day, I've only see it once. I'm a sucker for good art direction, and the level of detail in this seemingly alternate universe was something that grew on me. It had a strange balance of Fantasy, 50's style Sci-Fi, and modern times that I appreciated a lot more as the film progressed. It felt different yet at the same time it remained very cohesive. The high quality animation definitely helped in that respect and it's really impressive how well it holds up for an 80's anime film. Very good stuff[...]
All in all, a very well made and ambitious film. Kinda meandered a bit around the middle of the film but I enjoyed it a lot.
If I was just to highlight one aspect of the work for a moment, I've always found myself impressed that it's one of those rare science fiction where the story is actually about the science, rather than the 'sci-fi elements' simply acting as a pretty backdrop to a standard plot that you could really shoe in to any setting e.g. a war movie that just happens to take place in space.
It's very specifically about the journey to get man into space and what that means both for humanity and the individuals who strive to make it happen. That it manages to cover this very dense topic without being boring, condescending, simplistic or preachy is a testament to the skill of the director and writer. It could have become rubbish very, very easily. We're lucky that Planetes managed to tackle some of these very ideas a few decades later, although Planetes can get quite preachy from time to time.

That little demon made it impossible to watch Air Master for me. Which is a shame because the fights were pretty cool.
I really have to disagree. Not on every account of course, the script is awful, the story sucks, the entire alien thing ruined everything.
But I really have to ask you, how long has it been since you've seen the second season? I'm asking, because there could have been a gap between your viewing of S2 and the movie, which made you forget the GODAWFUL animation in S2.
I don't know, after seeing S2, I really enjoyed the animation and the art of the movie, and I've seen them back to back.
I think what is especially impressive about the film is how much respect it has for the viewer. The movie definitely feels like it was written and directed with the understanding that the person watching the movie is not a retard who needs everything spoon fed to them, and every topic detailed and simplified. The way it handles the topic of religion is especially noteworthy, because it is so rare to see religion being used purely as a character aspect, without the need to dramatize or expand on it as some sort of plot element. Instead it is shown as a lifestyle choice of a specific character, and used to contrast and develop how different people have different outlooks on life and hence react differently to certain interactions and events.
The viewer is respected by the film makers and there is an understanding that it can be more meaningful to just interpret what you see based on your own values, rather than following some specific message that the movie is trying to say. In a perfect world, that respect is then in turn given to the film makers to show that they have achieved something great, and to encourage them to continue making such works to further the culture of animation for the better of mankind.
Unfortunately it is not a perfect world, so the people spat in their faces and the movie bombed. Unable to get funding for anything like this again, they turned to the only other subject matter they knew best: young girls and giant robots. Hence Gainax as we know them came into being.
I rewatched all the Special Editions for Gundam 00 the day before I watched the Gundam 00 movie in the cinema. I came out of the film wanting to throw up.
I think the difference in tone made it more powerful... because the series is only serious when it really calls for it, it makes those scenes and episodes stand out all the more. And of course, you really get attached to the characters in the lighthearted moments.

Rumiko Takahashi certainly wasn't happy, but Oshii didn't clearly didn't give a fuck what she thought. You have to be pretty sure of yourself to go against the wishes of the creator whose work you are adapting, especially when she demanded script changes during the creation of the first movie.
