Jeremy Lin: Asian American, Harvard Grad... NBA great?

Hmm, maybe! He certainly struck me as a total douche. Michael Jordan, too.

I don't know if there is a bigger douche in basketball than Michael Jordan.

From what I can tell about this guy's story, he was already showing a ton of promise a few years back but scouters totally ignored him because he was asian? Even his coach was going to cut him, and only played him reluctantly? Was that all because he is asian? Did they just ignore his skill during practice or something?

There are players who make a lot more money in front of him.

He was going to be cut that week, D'Atoni threw him bone. Jeremy threw back a contract extension. The rest is written...

There are a lot of practice all-stars out there.

I don't exactly understand this.

Are you saying they didn't play him, even though he was really good, just because they overpaid for other players and felt obligated to use what they paid for? Why would they not just use the better players on their team?

As for the contract extension, does that come with a pay raise?

What you do in practice doesnt always translate to game speed situation. Mike played him because he was about to be cut. And Tony and Iman just cant run point.

If the Knicks make the playoffs Mike will probably get a 2 year extension. Some sort of raise.

Nobody knew he was 20ppg 50 percent shooting good. He probably didnt know himself.

Why don't they get put into play? Just too many people on a team to play everyone? How do they decide who gets to play? Shouldn't it just be who's playing the best?

Because they cant do it in real game situations very well. Most NBA players will hit about 60-70 percent of open non-contested jumpers when practicing.

I didn't really follow him on his prior teams, but just looking at his stats on GS its understandable. he wasn't exactly setting the world on fire

I just hope he can stay in the league for a few years and that can be considered a success. I'm not really falling for the hype, but if he can go beyond being a role player and into a star, then it would be a really amazing story.

Doesn't that just mean they're practicing wrong? Why wouldn't they play as hard as a real game to get a better simulation?

I think he will be a good starter but not a star. The PG talent in the NBA right now is just way too high for him to really stand out imo.

Of course he will get voted into the ASG next year by the fans but that's another matter entirely.

Yeah. I had heard little stories here and there about his douchiness, but Chamillionaire's story was the best one.

Yeah, the side gig I have, we're doing all of this year's Air Jordan release, we did Wade's, CP3's, and now we got booked for Chicago, Orlando and New York.

We met Jordan in Miami Beach, and he was a total dick to people. Not to me, or the folks I was with, because he didn't even acknowledge us, but to his Nike folks. They told us some crazy stories about his dickishness.

Care to share?

Not while I've got business with and pending with Nike.

I'll be general. He's very rude to service people and tips poorly. Think, $20 to a waitress on a 5 figure bill.

He was extremely demeaning to the Nike staff that I worked with.

The nicest athletes I've ever encountered were hockey players.

Vick, arguably the most amazing athlete at the QB position ever and definitely one of the most exciting players of the generation across all sports. A human highlight reel.

vs

Peyton Hillis - a short, white, better Brandon Jacobs.

Thats not fair..a big part of it was people still hate vick because of the stupid dog thing.

You don't want to risk injury by going at 100% with full-contact in practice. Also, you'll be practicing against the second team. That's a lot different than going against the other team's defensive specialists in a game that matters.

Here's his high school coach on that: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/spo...l-coach-says-race-hindered-opportunities.html

But his high school coach, Peter Diepenbrock, said he never thought Lin's being an Asian American might have caused college coaches to stay away because the Central Coast Section of about 125 schools typically produces only three Division I college players in a five-year period.

Diepenbrock's perception changed the next year, he said, when 10 Division I coaches scouted a black Palo Alto player whom Diepenbrock described as someone who "could have been a nice junior college player."

But due credit: Lin improved a lot over this past offseason. I read somewhere that he really didn't lift that much weights in college, and he's definitely bulked up over his first-year body.

While as a Knick fan I hope he becomes a star, the more realistic expectation is just that he'll become a good, young starting PG. While everyone around here has fallen in love with the idea of Lin being the second coming of Nash, and that would be great if it happened, but right now I just want him to consistently get 12/8. Baby steps.

Also he played fine against Minnesota. He had a great first half but tailed off in the second but he was just tired. Jeremy wasn't getting anything more than a couple garbage minutes here and there until his first breakout game against the Nets, he isn't used to this many minutes all poured onto him all of a sudden. He'll be fine.

He definitely has potential, though.

surprised this hasn't been updated yet but he had 27 points 11 assist and had pretty much a buzzer beater against Toronto today.

I looked at the score during the 3rd quarter and said, oh boy, it's on. Amare is back and they're about to lose. This is going to get ugly quick.

And then Jeremy Lin shut me the hell up. Wow. This dude is great. Once he gets his turnovers down(which is a typical problem with point guards that lack a lot of experience in the NBA) this dude will become a legend.

He has to do a lot more to become a legend. lol

Hmm... I'd say he'd be 50% less popular. How Asian-Americans feel about Lin is how we felt about Larry Bird, honestly.
You felt something for Larry Bird because he was white? Strange. I never cared about Jerry West and find Steve Nash absolutely annoying.

Basketball is a cheap sport to play that is popular in poor, urban areas. I recognize that is why so many more blacks get into the sport, and so many more of them end up getting very good at it. It does not make me feel any better or worse about my race if one of them excels at it. Nor does it make me feel better that whites dominate tennis or golf or another sport that poor kids in urban areas never get to play as much.

You're right. That was a bit of hyperbole there. IF he keeps this up and works on a few of the flaws in his game, he has Nash like potential at least.

Dude come on. Steve Nash won MVP's. Lin can be a great player in this league if he can stay healthy and work on his jumper. He's got a really good first step and with Chandler and Stoudemire will get a TON of assists just running a sound pick and roll.

At least? So if he just works on his flaws a bit, he can be as good or better than the best point guard of the last ten years?

He is definitely a good player, but really, the cover of SI? Also he is a tad to cocky for my liking, but then again I don't like Ray Allen cause he smirks every time he scores a shot.

Yeah, idk about Nash like potential. That would mean he is a definite Hall of Famer. We'll if he can keep this up.

Also, to arts&crafts.. of course he is on SI. He's the biggest story in sports right now.

You make a point, they need to sell some issues.

I don't watch basketball much but I caught ESPN and they compared him to Shaq. Maybe he will be the next Shaq. They seem to always compare Asians to Shaq. They used to compare Yao to Shaq, too.
