Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

It took the Reapers centuries to wipe out the Proteans, and they now have to deal with wiping out not only the humans, but also all the other species. So yeah, Earth might be pretty much fucked, but there really is time to organize a defence. But eh, if you cant suspend your disbelief this might not be the game for you?

Fair enough, until I have to do a bunch of side-quests to even convince the Council to back me. Then I start to wonder how or why no one is prepared. But I WILL play it, as I played the first two, and will judge accordingly.

And I won't be the least bit surprised if Shepard and Co. defeat the Reapers using some forgotten ancient super-weapon the writers will pull out of their ass at the last minute. Or the game will go the route of Independence Day and Shepard will upload a virus to the Reapers that causes them to simulataneously explode.

Nah, the Rachni man.

It feels like it's even more than its predecesor and that it tried to copy Uncharted's cinematic awesomeness without success

Also worst framerate ever, i wonder if this happens @360 version too

huh?

HUH?!

I saw some Bioware interview where they said male Shepard character model was based on some people but would not say who it was so it has to be someone famous, I see some similarities from those people, I guess you don't no big deal.

i imported my femshep from ME2 into the ME3 demo.

why does my femshep look like femshit?

There's no mystery behind male Shepard, it is literally scanned and modeled after Mark Vanderloo.

The default female Shapard looks much better than those first released images. Emma Stone has to be one of their inspirations and I still say The Rock and Brad Pitt where 2 actors the male Shepard was designed after even though Bioware never admits who it was.

Hahahahha what?

Idono, I do strongly feel that anyone who would cancel a pre-order after trying this demo out never intended to buy the game in the first place and is probably among the many on neogaf who inexplicably hate bioware because they paid full price for dragon age 2 and ... wait for it - hated it in spite of spending 40 + hours with the game...

don't know about cancelling pre-orders, but, for anyone, like myself, still kinda on the fence about this game, i'd say the demo, which isn't nearly up to the standards of the previous game, is pretty much a killing blow. bioware would've been better off either passing on it, or cleaning it up & releasing it down the road...

releasing a demo of a sequel in any series that looks/feels inferior to what came before is a mistake. the faithful are already on board. all you're gonna do is discourage anyone else...

i'm sure i'll get around to playing me3 some time, but am definitely in no hurry now...

Cause its not supposed to be a 1:1 system? Imported ME1 Sheps look like ass in ME2 without tweaking. Same now for ME2 to ME3. Theyve improved and altered some of the CC so youre gonna have to do some tweaking.

It kind of undermines the whole "create your own shepard" experience when you have one you're happy with and it looks like shit in the next game.

It seems to me like some of the makeup options are missing, so hopefully there's more stuff in the full game.

I think my Shepards have all looked pretty much the same from 1 to 2. 3 completely changes female hair so obviously that's going to be different.

Posted this in the other thread, but it's only right that it gets posted here too:

Thanks to some people in a stream I'm watching, if you use this new Facebook app thing to invite people, by tying your Facebook account to Origin, you could have also been playing ME3 multiplayer with the BF3 people, and you can do it right now too:

http://apps.facebook.com/mass-effect/

I'd love to it and get into multi right this instant, but I don't feel like tying my Facebook to Origin, especially almost three days later that I could have already been playing the hell out of it - but there you go.

Wish this was known since the 14th, could have been playing all this time, and like rozay suggested, I'm just gonna make a new Facebook account just for this since I don't want to tie my actual Facebook account to this.

Yeah, its not perfect but if it results in an improved CC and better looking characters Im ok with having to spend 5-10 min tweaking my Shep. The alternative is the same CC for all three games will little to no improvements. I dont think people would be very happy if we still only had the ME1 CC 3 games later.

Eh, each version, they have lost a lot of what made Mass Effect, Mass Effect. The music in the first I feel was far more moving than the ME2, but I still felt ME2 had a great soundtrack. What really has been bugging me is that they have been cleaning up the graphics... there is not even any options to turn on a film grain filter or motion blur... IMO, the film grain is what made ME1 just so awesome... hid some of the 360's limitations and made it feel like a 1970's Sci-Fi movie!

Huh?! I imported my character from ME1->ME2->ME3, they all look the same. Don't know what version you are playing, maybe the PS3 codes are messed up.

Ive never done a custom male, default Vanderloo is boss, but custom females at least from ME1>ME2 required some tweaking since they altered some of the CC. I havent had a chance to try out ME3 demo yet, but from what others have posted of their FemSheps and vids Ive seen, slight tweaking will probably be required since they changed up the CC a little again, nearly all the hair styles for one appear to be altered for females.

Well the recruitment thing works, so if anyone out there was to get recruited by me and get early access, send me a PM.

About to start off right with the Vanguard again for a bit, then head to bed!

Shepard standing tall atop a pile of rubble, giving a stirring speech reminding everyone of just What We're Fighting For as the bombastic musical score swells in the background.
The other ME games already do this, minus the rubble.

They were both pretty generic.

Christ, the lengths some of you go to write off any criticism at all is extremely sad. Kind of impressive in a way, but mostly sad.

I'm not really seeing how he was reaching. The only thing I disagreed with was the "inexplicable" reasons why NeoGAF hates BioWare, but I think he nailed his point about the demo being a demo.

Just finished the demo...

Uhh...wow. Maybe it's because I haven't played ME2 in so long, but this just felt...bad. Nothing about this game felt right to me. I should really go back to ME2 and see if I feel the same about it.

Isn't he technically really old now? It's been four years, and in Salarian years that's like 10-15 years.
Do Salarians change color when they age? If you assume they get darker, why is Mordin not very dark? Plus, look at the shape of the uh.. Cheeks or whatever they're called on Salarians. Kirrahe in ME1 doesn't have round cheeks, while Morlan does, and so does the "new" Kirrahe.

Also the no holster is the most aesthetically off-putting thing I've seen in gaming in a long time. It honestly annoys me so much that it alone makes me not want to buy this for 60 bucks.

Mass Effect 1 actually had Shepard climbing out of rubble to a bombastic score (at the end). Don't remember a speech though. 2 definitely had speeches to swelling scores, but no rubble. So cheesy, but so lovable.

Yeah that part's fine but he put in the whole haters gonna hate bullshit too. I can't take anyone who says that seriously.

There was a speech in ME1 when Anderson steps down and Shepard is assigned the Normandy.

After playing it 4 times, here are my impressions:

- Facial animations are much better indeed, specially if you pick default Male Shepard (custom shepards are a lot worse)
- Combat is great, better than 2's
- Sound design is jaw-dropping, even though I missed a more 'impacting' soundtrack during the first segment of the demo
- Runs smooth in my 'old' PC, better than 2
- enemies reactions are better this time around, didn't find a single suicidal enemy in insanity
- graphics are great, specially character models and Lighting
- Actually I like Ashley's new design, it translated well to the game
- Control while running, finally
- Looks like the Vanguard won't be the only fun class to play anymore

The bad:
- Animations are still a bit stiff (running animation has to be a joke)
- The first segment graphics are bad.
- One button for running/roll/action led me to a lot of deaths in insanity
- Suffers a bit from dudebro syndrome.

Basically this. Hope they had time to fix this things. Demo is awesome.

I guess that the skin might loosen as they get older plus he might have some kind of Salarian liver spots. Mordin even comments that his skin color is rare (and attractive).

But Bioware probably just waits until someone comes up with a half decent reasoning on a forum to give a real answer

Anyone else notice that Captain Kirrahe is now Morlan?

Ehh his skin is darker I'll give you that, but the gradient between the top of his head and his chin is still present and that shot of Morlan doesn't seem to have it. Could just be the lighting as well.

I would love to know why they took a step back with a few things, the animations seem to have taken a hit as most don't look so great, more so than usual, and they have even removed things like switching camera side and holstering weapons.

Some very strange choices when a game is suppose to improve and add on the last one.

Did the same for me, made my femshep look pretty off and the colours were all wrong.

I would assume they have just messed around with the codes though, the numbers I couldn't match up with the sliders or a number was missing that was in the code I used.
As silly as some of things Bioware have done with ME3, I don't think they would be foolish enough to screw with peoples characters and they will probably import fine.

I dont know, his jowel/cheeks? are/is much larger and especially his chin is deeper and more prominant. He also didnt seem to have the chin markings he has now and that Marlon had.

Just got done playing the demo on PC and I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure what all the "cancelling pre-order" people were expecting. I liked both scenarios and I think the power upgrade system has potential. I play Vanguard and maxed out my charge for the second segment and had a lot of fun flying around and shooting people.

My biggest complaint was that the space bar does too much, as a few times I wanted to take cover but instead rolled because I was too close to the side of something.

I thought that the combat areas felt a little more organic than in ME2. I always knew when combat was going to start in ME2 because the room was set up in a corridor like fashion with pretty obvious places near the entrance for cover, but I thought the layouts in the demo were done a bit better.

The non-holstering thing is slightly irksome I guess, but if that's really the difference between you buying the game or not I really doubt you wanted it anyway.

I liked the characters and scenarios that I saw, so I don't know. Maybe seeing all the people shitting all over the thing lowered my expectations enough so that I was able to enjoy it. I am glad I tried the demo for myself though.

But the transition from praise to venom has been a lot shorter than it was for ME2. I suppose it's only the demo.

Basically.

I'm no fan of ME2 and disagreed with it winning GAF's GOTY, but it wasn't just for the usual reasons everybody cites (the absence of a plot). I thought the third-person gameplay was barely adequate and often quite rigid/boring.

This game - while still less fluid than some of its contemporaries - at least feels fun to play for me. There's more movement options, the encounters feel better and seem more strategic.

The plot is typical dudebro "save the universe" stuff, but I accepted that a long time ago. So whatever. This demo worked well enough for me.

At least they were very close. Both of my transfers from ME->ME2 went fine. I tried to recreate just a decent femshep in the demo and failed miserably. I'm telling you Bioware is leaving a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of loyal fans. And it is shit that should have transferred easily from game to game. WTF is Bioware doing?
