Gay and Bisexual relationship thread |OT|

I prefer to date guys my age with either a 5 age difference either way. I was chatting online with a kid in his early 20's and it was very difficult to find common interests, for example his favorite movie was Resident Evil and Harry Potter.
So that's why you don't talk to me on Facebook? :(

:p

Now thinking about it, I don't have favorite movies. I've watched tons of movies, and really like usually movies that many don't like (like Mortal Kombat, Final Destination -especially MK which I've watched over 100 times-); but I wouldn't consider them favorites..ever.

Same with music: Fear Factory, New Pornographers, Interpol, Beatles..yet, no actual favorites.

***

In my case, more than common interests I actually prefer just that the person accepts whatever I like (and vice-versa). [common acceptance is the term? :p]
So, that person doesn't actually need to like or play videogames; but neither go around telling me that "I'm wasting my time", "lol vidoegames", etc.
I rather date a non-gamer that sits next to me and watches me play any game; than a hardcore gamer or someone that hates them; in that case.

I usually get blank expressions when I list off bands and movies to people that I try dating.

Movies: Labyrinth, Pan's Labyrinth, Hero, Lady in the Water, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, etc.

Music: Sigur Ros, The Cure, Eluvium, Ingrid Michaelson, Within Temptation, Explosions in the Sky, etc.

I'm not the only one who's had similar experience. A friend of mine has had similar situations as well and he's straight.

Except that I wasn't talking about me. They're not staring at me. :P

They're staring at a hot guy and covering my ability to see the mirror (which is necessary when you're doing shoulder/back) because they're too busy flexing/trying to impress said hot guy which happened to exercise nearby. In this one instance, I was half -ing and half annoyed because this guy basically covered up my line of vision just so he could stretch his arm near the hot guy even though he was not doing any other exercise there (all the benches were taken). Like this:

This should really be its own OT. I mean you went and drew it. Only OPs are that dedicated.

The Cure is uncommon? I don't think you have to have those kinds of interest in common to make a relationship work.

Hahaha, yeah.
Wait!... Lady in The Water? ...

.___.

You, sir, have excellent tastes.

You, sir, have excellent tastes.

Well thank you!

And Yes, I am man enough to admit that I am one of maybe five people who enjoyed Lady in the Water!

I can't believe I forgot a movie though, I have to add The Fountain.

Well The Cure isn't that uncommon but some of the other bands I listen to sure are. I wouldn't say you need to have that type of stuff in common. It just helps to talk with someone when you can share their interests.

My ATL guy (now strictly friend) told me I had to turn in my gay card because the only song I knew at the club was Titanium by Guetta/Sia. Otherwise when I listed my favorite bands he had the blankest poker face I had ever seen on a guy. At the same time my FWB I met last weekend uttered Gotye, Woodkid and Roison Murphy in one sentence and I swooned :o

I also have the same problem with movies, except my only standard is that they like horror movies. Or atleast joke while watching them.

I will never understand why so many gay men seem to purposely limit their music tastes to top 40 =\ I got over that phase in high school...

Funny story about that >.>

I went to a guy's apartment, he made me dinner, everything was awesome.... Framed copy of Disraeli Gears by Cream hung on his wall. I music nerd orgasmed for like five minutes ranting about how great it was, asked him what his favorite track on it was....

"Oh, it's up here because I think it has pretty art, it's my dad's. Should I listen to it?"
"....bitch."

(Also, the boyfriend who I went just a tad mental about earlier in this thread; first Valentines day we spent together, I played him an arrangement of "In My Life" on my guitar as his gift.... and he thought I wrote it.)

I don't think they purposefully limit themselves, it's just that they don't know better. It's not limited to gay people by the way, tons and tons of people are just gonna do/listen/read things that are put in front of it.

While I do agree in part with Alcoori, I also think know from first-hand experience that many homos don't limit their listening to the most mainstream pop, it's often just the most fun, easily accessible thing around. Gays love to party. Pop music is party music. No one goes to a club to dance to Sigur Ros and Coltrane.

I don't mind some top 40 music and I wouldn't say it's all bad. Most of it just doesn't fit with my personal taste in music.

Then again, some of my coworkers think I only listen to bands because nobody has heard of them and they have strange names.

THIS! People just think it's gays and girls who love it because it's pop but it's dancey/catchy and easily danceable. Nobody is here for rock or some other bullshit in a club.

But they all sound the same. I mean, you could basically just have one song on a loop and no one would know.
:P

And this can be the case with practically any genre. I'm not going to claim pop works as high art, but there's plenty of legitimate worth to be found if a person is willing to approach it with an open mind.

And yet, you could work differences out like Dan Savage. Totally hates his husband/Terry's music and they fight about it but find a common ground.

Hehe, music related questions really are the worst. Listing my favourite bands and artists seems to be a good recipe for awkwardness.

But yeah, that's what I get for listening to soundtracks and largely unknown artists. When it comes to mainstream stuff, I'm as clueless as they come. =p

Maybe I should look up some popular music and just lie next time. ><

I realize it's fun party music, and there's a place for that; at the club, maybe at a house party. I don't want to sit in bed and cuddle to Gaga or Mika. :P I listen to it all, it's just frustrating when guys don't challenge their own tastes and culture themselves from time to time.

(Then again, a lot of gay guys would freak the fuck out and assume I'm some sort of straight republican planning to gaybash them if I brought out my record player and country LPs to listen to on a date.... I have yet to meet one gay country fan who wasn't at least double my age, not even for Elvis Costello, which is accessible as you can get ._. I mean, who could hate a musician who once put on a bear suit and made out with Stephen Colbert?)

Give me your hat. I want it!

I did later that night. Very softly. >_____________>

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT! The Eagles are that band that cockblocked Balckout from debuting at #1 because their stans complained to Billboard about their Walmart sales or some shit? I am forever pressed.

culture themselves? really?
the opposite of your statement is true as well

It was because Billboard didn't count exclusive albums for some weird reason, so despite Long Road Out of Eden selling well over twice what Blackout did, they weren't going to include it on the charts.
However, a last minute change was issued.
If you want to blame anyone, blame Walmart for being dumb.
I do all the time.

It's frustrating to you when guys.... do listen to more than one type of music? o.O

Maybe it's just the musician in me, but it's just annoying to me when someone will listen to nothing but top 40 and never give anything else a chance, and this seems to occur frequently in the gay community. It's almost like we're trying, as a culture, to discard any personal identity to attempt to fit in with what society thinks we are. I certainly did that in high school when I wouldn't listen to anything but top 40 and Mika for months, constantly needed a boy on my arm, and dismissed country music as "republican nonsense" .-.

I mean no offense to people who enjoy top 40. -I enjoy top 40-; I have a playlist containing it for apartment parties, and I'll listen to it when I'm in a goofy mood while studying or something. I just think it's obnoxious when people cover their ears in disgust when anything but party music gets played.

Would you say Johnny Cash is country music?

Oh my~

Gaga is horseshit. Booo Kyon.
And I don't even like the Eagles outside Hotel California but wtf dude? C'mon son.

You make the assumption that all Top 40 fans only listen to that. Marius meant that a lot of people who listen to other genres dont give a chance with other genres from the ones they like.

Hey, you aren't the only one, buddy. For me it's mainly because I'm all about video game OSTs.

Cash is country, not my favorite but very enjoyable, he does kind of transcend genres a bit though :P

I never said (or implied) that anywhere. o.O People get so defensive about the weirdest things.
