I would be in agreement if I didn't like Mio's troll-sister more.

Yukko-Destroyesasd-of-Worlds.gif

which episode is that scene from?

The dream is dead. We will never get USA girl.

You could always read the novels!

It's hard, or rather impossible, to argue with someone engaged in blanket reductionism.
Can you not agree that at least the great majority of episodes follow this exact formula? Perhaps there are outlying episodes that I have forgotten, but when a work is given such praise (not from you but I mean the general posters here and opinions of it in general) -- I expect more than just a few outlying episodes that don't follow a dull, repetitive formula.

Indeed. I never stated that Oshii didn't explore the same ideas in his work, or that perhaps he explores them in a different (and better) manner. Still, that wasn't the claim I was refuting. You said that SAC was filled with "senseless technobable", I explained that those discussions were actually fruitful e.g. it they were actually about something in the story or world.
Perhaps I was wrong in calling it senseless as I did. However, it's senseless from a storytelling perspective. It's clutter. It wouldn't have to be there in the form it is if the visual storytelling was more effective.

What you're actually complaining about is not 'empty dialogue' but an excessive amount of dialogue as opposed to visual storytelling. This is a different, and much older and far more wide reaching, argument. I don't disagree that when you're telling stories in a visual medium you should, wherever possible, communicate your story/ideas/characters/themes through the language of the visuals themselves as opposed to dialogue.
I feel that it is both excessive and empty dialogue. Because if it weren't empty, I wouldn't consider it excessive. It would be lengthy.

However that doesn't mean that I feel every single work needs to be like that - or that I don't enjoy shows where lots of characters talk about stuff in great detail or at excessive length. After all, I love Legend of the Galactic Heroes so if I said I hated all exposition but still liked that show I'd be a god dammed hypocrite. For me it's not inherently a problem if you make your show like that.
Sure, but it's not like Oshii's movies are free of characters talking about stuff in detail. However, when they do talk a lot, it tends to be more interesting and meaningful.

Now, it's of course up to what balance you feel a work should have in terms of visual storytelling vs dialogue storytelling. I just don't feel that there's anything wrong with having a characters talk about stuff, I'm not just looking to experience 'pure works' that care primarily about visual storytelling.
Right, but there's a difference between using dialogue to help tell the story (usually, best in conjunction with the visual elements)... and using dialogue to tell the story.

Also, I've decided to work on a detailed breakdown of that one scene in Innocence I linked because it's really good and I decided that since I used it as an example already I may as well detail exactly why I did. I'll post it in a bit.

Haibane Renmei 1

This is pretty cool. The settings seem interesting and the show has some nice atmosphere about it. Really didn't expect the
violent visuals when the wings grew. I thought this was going to be a cute slice of life type of thing

Hope they can keep things fun for the next 12 episodes.
I think you'll be surprised - hopefully in a pleasant way.

Every Nichijou GIF I see just results in a blank confused stare from me. Like I'm not in on some elaborate inside joke or something like that.

If enjoying the downfall of a garbage franchise that never deserved any success in the first place is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Black Rock Shooter 3

Kohata seems like a good sport. At least until
the counselor came in and fucked everything up.
No the point is that she's totally insane and repressing everything. She needs to treat school drama like a matter of life and death like everyone else in the show.

Fine is kind of cool, if she would work on her english
and put some clothes on
. All of the symphogear users are cool too.
Icchi Ball is probably my favorite relic attack

I just watched Castle of Cagliostro for the first time in ages and it was a delightful experience. I'd love some recommendations of more 1980s anime.

edit: I guess it came out in 1979, but you get the idea.

Symphogear 07

Suddenly, fucking plot and explanations out the ass from out of nowhere! Also I hated the end. That stuff with Hibiki is stupid and I raged a little that they're going in this direction, because now you can see exactly what's going to happen and resolve, how, and why for the rest of this season.

Also dat engirsh end-end!

The animation for most of the good skits in nichijou are always good in context. Though Im only seeing it since my anime club shows it, wouldnt have watched beyond episode 2 if I was gauging what to watch in a season, that professor turns me off from the show.

It always seems overly elaborate for what's going on in the gifs, but I guess that's supposed to be part of the joke.

Guilty Crown 17

So Inori didn't kill the council president, but she sliced up 3 kids before that tried to turn her into the authorities since they believed they could be freed by doing so. Are we still supposed to think she's a good character just because she spared the student president?

Also, damn this show is pretty gruesome with all the school kids dying. That scene where that girl is held down by that auto-insect or whatever was pretty hard to watch.

Lagrange 6
Back to Madoka: let's assess what has happened between her and Muginami. Apart from the brief scene in the first episode, the first real interaction occurred when Muginami helped rescue Lan from drowning. After that, she (presumably) participated in Jersey Club activities, and generally NTR'd Lan.
See, that was a major problem I had with it as well. I hated that they give a throw-away line or two telling the audience that "oh, yeah, we have spent time together. We're totally emotionally invested in one another now." Great, it would have been nice if we'd have seen that at some point.

Then, we have the showdown and reveal with Village-kun in the restaurant.
The "Village" club grows daily. Mwahahaha!
I won't have anyone calling him by his proper name by the end of this series, if I have my way.

After the Vox's take to the skies, the episode takes another turn for the worse. It must be going nearly vertical at this point. In all previous episodes, fighting even a single Ovid has been a huge challenge for our noble protagonists, and yet suddenly, they've turned to cannon fodder. Perhaps someday, we'll be able to have an anime where having more troops is actually an advantage. Lagrange does not fill me with hope for that eventuality, however.
I assumed it had something to do with them likely not being piloted by humans. Either way, it was a pretty dumb excuse to say "hey, they have weapons now!" Maybe the magical time-skip we didn't see had them training fiercely in combat. We're probably only getting another throw-away line, if that were the case.

Oh, and maru is getting a bit annoying at this point, wan's still cute though.
Wan will always be cute.

Inori should still be a good character, we just need to know why or how she loses control, the other students seem more like the bad guys anyway

It would have revolutionized the harem genre had it been allowed to end when
Ichika revealed himself as an evil mastermind that was just acting dense the whole time.

Now that it's been cancelled, we'll still be stuck in the Akamatsu era. Hope you're happy.

Yeah, I can never remember his full name, so going with village/giagia/vigiaigo is a lot easier. :p

you raise another good point
about the weapons, I should have tied that in as well.

Guys, it's Space Tiger. At least get it right.
NEVER!

I'll probably take the time to better respond to your post on Sky Crawlers, Jexhius, but I wanted to quickly say that the lost sense of place and time was one of my favorite parts of the movie.
It just sort of feels like you're existing in a vacuum with the characters while the entire film takes place. It was kind of disturbing, when I examined my sense of relief upon visiting the diner again later.
It's one of those things that I hate while I'm watching a movie, but I love it in retrospect.

I haven't seen a couple of these like Angels Egg for example, but here's some stuff that I like or I have seen discussed frequently as being worth your time.

Akira
Angel's Egg
Anne of Green Gables
Ashita no Joe
Dirty Pair
Gauche the Cellist
Golgo 13: The Professional
Grave of the Fireflies
Gundam is generally good, specifically the original series, Chars Counterattack, and War in the Pocket.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Macross
Nausicaa
Patalabor
Robotech
Rose of Versailles
Space Cobra
Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer

But we know that Madoka is good in Kendo - it was part of the first episode.

That's still one-on-one. It's more the deal of "we're just swatting our hand and dozens fall" phenomenon that was a little disappointing. The gravity of the fights seemed to suddenly have evaporated during that time-skip.

It's not ruining the show for me or anything, but it's just one of those things that's like "what happened here?" I'm in this for the wan opening song.

But we know that Madoka is good in Kendo - it was part of the first episode.

But
she was beaten by the captain. sure, that doesn't mean she isn't good, but it seemed more like her fulfilling her duties, rather than actually being accomplished at kendo.
