Jeremy Lin: Asian American, Harvard Grad... NBA great?

Does Harvard even offer sports scholarships?
They don't offer sports scholarships per se, but coaches get a number of slots that they can recommend to the admissions office, and people are admitted if their GPA and SAT corresponds to a figure. The NYT article says the coaches get a few 180s (3.1 GPA, 1150 SAT) and aim to recruit those that get a 190 or above in the Academic Index, which corresponds to a 3.5 GPA and 1250 SAT.

Recruited athletes are admitted from a list submitted by coaches and make up roughly 13 percent of each class

It's known that he chose Harvard over UCLA because UCLA couldn't guarantee him playing time, so we know he at least had discussions with coaches.

They also game the system--it's not that the athlete himself needs to have a certain number, its just that the overall average in the school or team should be a specific number. So you can "recruit" bench players with high academic marks to make up for the starters with lower numbers.

Brilliant Bench Players

The overall athletic A.I. can also be balanced by recruits with considerably higher A.I.’s who play other, lower-profile sports, or by recruits with exceedingly high A.I.’s who are stacked at the top end of a team’s roster.

“We see it all the time, a team with an A.I. number over 200, but when you get down to it, who plays?” Jones said. “You can make your number whatever you want by recruiting kids just for their high A.I., and who cares if they play? It is done.

He had a 4.2 GPA in high school.

That doesn't preclude garnering admission preferences by being on a coach's recruitment list.

Anyway, this NY Daily News interview with a Harvard basketball assistant coach basically confirms he was recruited.

One afternoon in mid July 2005, Bill Holden, then a top assistant at Harvard, surveyed several basketball courts inside a Las Vegas gymnasium. Multiple AAU events were ongoing as prospects competed for recruiters’ attention. Holden, having matched players capable of completing an Ivy League curriculum with athletic competitiveness, observed Lin. At 6-foot-3, Lin fit the physical profile Holden sought. His corresponding 4.2 GPA helped, but his performance in the game hurt. It was a non-competitive, low-energy contest and Lin failed to distinguish himself from the pack. Holden, dressed in Crimson gear, informed Peter Diepenbrock, Lin’s high school coach, that his reactions were twofold: yes, Holden had seen him play; no, Harvard would not continue to recruit him. “I think he’s a Division III player,” Holden said. Lin’s life path changed soon after. Holden happened to be watching a game on a court adjacent to the one where Lin’s team was playing later that week. Once the game got out of hand, he turned his attention toward Lin, who was playing a better opponent and exhibited a striking aggressiveness. Lin, Holden thought, showed the instincts of a killer. “I made him a top priority,” Holden says. “I would do anything to land him.”

after watching all the games...

...fuck it. the boy is the truth. with JR Smith, Carmelo might become trade bait. why not? all JR has to do is what he did today. Everyone else contributed and Lin pressured the defense as usual. when he gets his turnovers under control, the Knickerbockers will be a legit threat to the Bulls and Heat in the East.

Carmelo + ???? = Dwight Howard? Make them shits happen.

dreams, don't do me like this. Don't buy into the Carmelo is a cancer bull. It ain't true.

Just watch. He'll fit. I promise. Amare? Not so much, but then thats a different story.

its a double edged sword.
no one outside of south beach wants to see lebron win a ring.
if he chips, then all the lebron shit talking is voided. do you want that?
and on the other, if the knicks win a ring, all of the new york bandwagoners
will smite nba-gaf with so much flury, that the thread will be unbearable to read.

9 turnovers against hornets mean his story is already over

basketball's tebow. Rondo will eat him alive
Oh lunchbox. Always wrong.
But to be honest. If NYC faces the Celtics in the playoffs, ill be secretly rooting for your team. It pains me to do that, but we must do everything in our power to suppress knicks-age from taking over the NBA thread.
That thread will be deplorable if Knicks win a title

Remember when Darren Collison made people question Chris Paul's talent? That shit would've been just as epic in NY. Underdog story aside, his coming out party was way more impressive. Too bad nobody gave a fuck because he was in New Orleans.

Classic.

What? No. How was it more impressive? It took Collison months in the league before he broke out. His initial starting period when Cp3 went down was solid, but nothing on Lin's levels. And he David West (and Thornton came up looking okay too).

Plus, fuck Collison. He quit on UCLA in the tourney and then returned when no one wanted him; he doesn't deserve the attention.

Is Amare OK? There's been a few points these last two games where he got the ball practically under the rim, but he didn't explode for a dunk like the Amare from a few years ago would have.

good question. i think he'll find some extra fire going forward. this is the best thing to a winner as he's been on since the glory days in Phoenix.

Melo...it's not that I think he's a cancer, guys. Rather, I think that they could be helped MORE by someone like Howard. I'm sure Melo can contribute and will. But I just think the Knicks would be even better if they could gain Howard's attention. or someone else. hell, there aren't too many players (including all-stars) that wouldn't be trade-able if the Knicks came calling with Melo dangling. they could find someone who will fit in better. or maybe i'm wrong and he'll be just fine. we'll see soon enough. but I'd be a little worried if I were him.

All the love aside, I still want to see what he does when he hits a cold streak and the turn-overs are still high. I want to see how he'll get through it. Then I'll have a really solid opinion on him. But the boy is killing the league atm. I figured he would have been averaging maybe 15ppg by now after cooling off. nope.avi

Amare is fucking done.

Collison was playing out of his mind when Paul went down. Again, not counting the whole underdog asian thing, he had people thinking that Paul may have been a system point guard for a month.

Solid is a hell of an understatement.

the media coverage might be a little overexuberant, but whatever, the NBA needs a story like this after the fucking hideous optics of the lockout. If this guy turns into a real triple threat, like J-Kidd in his prime, then the Knicks will be hard to fuck with. The NBA could use a hot Knicks club.

Triple-threat? It's a stance in basketball, not a comment on one's ability like it is in football. What are you thinking of? Kidd's ability to get triple doubles? Lin does not get that many boards.

Yeah, you're right. for whatever reason, I thought he was boarding 5 a game. anyway, if he averages something close to a double double every game, he'll still be legit.

Yeah, he's gonna really gonna be at the top of the key.

As if the retardedness of mainland China trying to claim J. Lin over Taiwan isn't bad enough. Some Korean paper chimed in and said his mom is ethnically Korean.

WTF.

I really hate Asia sometimes.

Haha my mom of all people told me that. Said Koreans are funny always claiming people like Confucius and now Lin

Saw the entire Knicks game and I was impressed.

The kid has to learn how to handle double teams better and be a little more careful with the ball, but those problems can usually be corrected. I expect to see his turnovers and points go down when Melo gets back (assuming he is 100%).

All in all Lin hit some big shots and made some big plays with Marion and JKidd guarding him, two of the toughest defensive guards in the league. The Mavs were definitely giving a full effort and while he still has some rough edges it appears the kid is legit.

I was also equally impressed with Fields. He is a great complementary piece. Now lets see if Mr. Pringles knows how to use all of these guys at the same time when Melo comes back.

If only we had competent ownership maybe the Lakers could have had Lin. :(

Am I racist if I laugh at this?

Nah.

On the other hand, I would like words with the creator of the video about perpetuating ASians as "others" and foreigners. He's from NorCal for Pete's sake.

is it bad that I kinda only want to watch knicks games now?

:\
As a Bulls fan, I'm not gonna lie. . I feel the same way. Last time I was this excited about the NBA was when I was watching Jordan. It might be that Rose seems to always be injured. When they play each other who do I root for? My Bulls or the team I currently like to watch play.

lol

Not really sounding like a huge Bulls fan there.

The fuck? If you're really a bulls fan, then the bulls come first every time. I like the story too, but ideally I want the Knicks to get the 7th seed (assuming we get the number 1), and then get bounced by the heat in the first round, since they obviously wouldn't beat them in a series.

stop calling yourself that.

Go down matchup for matchup, and say that again with a straight face.

I'd just like to say that my Taiwanese (nationality) friends on facebook literally won't shut the fuck up about Lin.

Every other status update/link/photo is about Lin.

He's had, what, 3 good matches?
