The Player 1 Podcast Topic

To be fair the Thumb guys this sounds like a bit more than "we want to buy super expensive mics". It looks like they're aiming to not only bring back the podcast but use it to establish a bigger site around it.

Edit: Also, I was semi-serious before. If you guys need any help I'd love to give it if I can. Our podcast's one year old this week and I've been editing it since day 1 so I've got some experience.

Phil's going to have to give prank phone calls to GameStop again when the 3DS Seaman comes out. It can be a podcast bonus feature.

Yeah, it sounds like they want office rent money too. No thanks.

Real talk, how much does it cost you guys to keep the archived shows available?

Sometimes I feel like I should volunteer my services to edit the podcast. Maybe it's just cause I edit one every week but whenever I hear a background noise that's clearly coming from someone who isn't talking it annoys the crap out of me. Such an easy thing to fix, I shall let CJ off though since he did just have a kid, but just wanted to have a quick moan.

Oops, sorry about that. :D Probably didn't help that I changed some settings this episode to make the whole thing louder than normal.

Wow. Well, good luck to them. If they're able to get that much money I hope they follow through and give people what they paid for.

$15/month for Libsyn for all 278 episodes. And that goes out of the donation money we have gotten via Paypal first before charging me directly.

CJ generously foots the bills for our show, so he's the one who can speak to that.

I know the Idle Thumbs guys are saying it costs thousands a year in hosting. I certainly hope that's not the case for our show. I know CJ's got enough money to buy a new Apple product every other month, but I'd feel bad if he's spending thousands on P1P each year.

Hosting with Libsyn is very reasonable and cheap. Their pricing structure tops out at $75 per month and that's if you spit out a huge amount of content each month.

That's kind of what I thought. Maybe they use the Monster cable equivalent of a web host.

I don't mind the project but the sort of disingenuous way they are selling it is a little off-putting.

If it were thousands a year then we would have stopped doing this a long time ago. :) Libsyn + hosting for playeronepodcast.com is an expense that I happily take on (and the Libsyn hosting is mostly taken care of by donations), but it's nowhere near thousands a year.

I pledge a penny (in mik's name) towards your eventual kickstarter

Thank you Phil for doing the show right after the bad news you got over the weekend.

I would pledge anything to support you guys! More than a penny for sure.

No thanks necessary. It actually helped me out quite a bit.

If people want to send me money, please do. With the impending baby, it would probably be good for me to be able to rent an office, even a tiny closet-sized one, from which I can record the podcast without an infant crying in the background.

And bandwidth expenses. It costs thousands of dollars to buy and maintain an internet. Only with your support can we continue to host an interactive website online.

And a new mic. I should probably spend a few hundred dollars on a new mic.

Also, it'd be cool if I could get you people to pay my rent for a few months.

Oh, I could use a new gaming PC! If I could bump the render distance in Minecraft up to "far," I really think it would help me talk about games better on our show.

Hmmm...baby food ain't cheap...

With your help, we could fly CJ, Greg, and Mike out to San Francisco each week so that we could all record the show in my office. If you think we have chemistry now, wait 'till we're all in the same room!

Of course, then I'd need a bigger office. Give me money to rent a bigger office.

We'll send you a photograph of us if you donate! Who wouldn't want an 8x10 glossy of some mildly unattractive nerds?

Forums cost money, I suppose?

I'm thinking of starting a spin-off Transformers podcast, but I need money to buy more toys. And, you know, mics and bandwidths and computers and offices for that show, too.

We are not attached to a large media outlet, people! We rely on your word-of-mouth to make us the success we are! We have no intention of ever charging for our show!

NOW GIVE US YOUR MONEY!

I'm a little taken aback at the P1P's reaction towards the Idle Thumbs Kickstarter.

It was one thing when Rebel FM used their donation money to build one of their crew members a computer; a bit of a selfish use of that money in my opinion, so I understood the reaction there, to some extent. With Idle Thumbs though, it seems to me they're going to be producing more than just their regular podcast; all the money sounds like it's going to be allowing for more content overall for the community.

I have no problem with it and wish them luck. I hope they use the funds wisely and deliver what those who donated want. Hey, I think it's great that many people want them to continue enough to put the money up for it.

Taken aback, lol. Do you have the vapors?

That's true. And that's neat. But I think what fans of their podcast (read: me) would like most is simply their return to podcasting. And you do not need 30 large for that. But hey, if you can get 30 grand--or 50, or 100, or wherever this thing winds up--go for it. Get that money. In six months, no one will be keeping track of where it went anyway.

I'm saddened that i missed the window to tweet a question for this episode.

Maybe I'll remember next time. I rarely open my tweeter app.

The cast should text me when I can tweet my question so i can remember it. :D

Send it any time and I'll make sure to drop it into the show outline. Whether or not CJ chooses to read it is another matter. ;)

Fair enough.

Is there going to be a mysterious 4th chair for next week's ep?

Maybe a fan competition?

A Kickstarter if you will?

I guess I lumped Phil and Stewy's sarcastic comments with the rest of the crews' opinions a little too quickly.

Your concerns aren't unfounded Mike, looking at it from that perspective, but as a fan of Idle Thumbs myself, I'm curious as to what else they'll produce, given the opportunity. It could go either way; for example, I'm starting to find the quality of the Comedy Button declining, despite the huge funding they got from their Kickstarter.

Let's hope the generosity of the Idle Thumbs fans/community is put to good use.

Also, to bring things back on topic a little, I really enjoy the dynamic you've brought to the P1P, Mike. It's refreshing to hear some PC gaming talk from time to time, and to see how the rest of the crew will react, apathetic or otherwise.

Good gracious! Let me prepare the fainting couch!

And no ill will is intended. I'm just taking the piss.

Although I do know of podcasts that have produced nearly 300 weekly episodes with no extended hiatuses and without asking for several thousands of dollars for equipment, facilities, and bandwidth.

Best of both worlds...

fixed
On an iPad so I can't fit what you seemed to 'fix', but that implied to me that your sentiments about the whole situation mirrored that of Phil's.

Not that I bear any strong feelings about the situation one way or another. I was just curious as to why the Kickstarter has illicited these reactions, seems a bit out of character from the guys I listen to every week.

Edit: Added Phil's comment to the quote.

haha, he fixed it so instead of Phil calling us "mildly unattractive" he called us "wildly unattractive."

(which I resent. I am so, so pretty.)

I thought it was a jab at the Idle Thumbs guys. My mistake then.

When did that happen? How did it get out that they used donation money to build a computer?
I believe their justification was so that this crew member could talk more about PC games. Unfortunately, said crew member has been absent or very quiet the past few episodes.

It didn't "get out" they straight up talked about doing it on the show. They built Tyler Barber (who wasn't even around when the bulk of that money was donated) a mid-high end computer so that he would "be able to talk about more games". Or something along those lines.

It always shocked me how brazen they were about it, I mean I guess I understand it. The money was given to them so it's there's to do what they want with, but when people gave them that money I doubt that's what they had in mind.

that dude got me to quit the podcast. i only listen to the eps when he's NOT on (and they're terrific when he's not there). he doesn't know anything about video games. i dunno why they keep him around.

What I'm getting at is did they explicitly admit on-air that they used donated funds to buy Tyler's computer bits or are people just assuming Tyler dipped into the donation till?

Well in that case you should check out the last month or so, he's not been on at all for whatever reason. Money well spent, clearly.

He's been replaced by Ryan O'Donnell mostly, with Sterling from GamesRadar filling the spot this week.

They explicitly said it on-air, I forget the exact context, I think they were replying to a letter and they listed off a bunch of stuff they'd spent money on. Which included mics, mixers, food and refreshments for guests and said computer for Tyler.

yea, i've been slowly catching up. i need to check the shownotes for who's on before i listen to each ep.

Also didn't like half of the cast bail out of the show after a few episodes?

I wouldn't say they bailed out, due to various circumstances (mostly getting jobs/relocating) Nick and Phil had to leave fairly early on. I actually forget who else was around regularly at the start.

kinda sucked they haven't guested onthe show after they left. they should give all the money to the Area5 guys. they did a terrific job guesting.

So hey, Player One Podcast! Pretty good, huh?

Any chance you guys will be able to start live streaming the show again any time soon? Was always fun getting to chat with you guys after the show and of course to tell you you were wrong in real-time.
