Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Reminded me of a certain scene in Higurashi.

Hated Another's OP at first but its really growing on me now.

Yeah, your exactly like me lol. This entire anime reminds me of Higurashi and the OP is also growing on me. Their little club they made to investigate the curse is similar to Higurashi, along with the creepy atmosphere. The major difference is that there are more boys in girls in the "Another" club :D

Haibane Renmei 2

Rakka is very hnngghh.

I have a feeling that there is something very dark behind all these rules for the Haibane and not leaving the town walls. Plus these Toga people looking very creepy didn't help at all

if there was ever a show I wish i could wipe and re-experience fresh....

Ok. I'll leave this here and come back in a few minutes after I pick up the pieces of my mind that were blown all over the place.

I think that was literally the most awesome episode of anything I've ever watched.

Steins Gate's 2nd half truly is some of the finest story telling in anime. Its so touching and epic.

Yeah started out with the uneasy feeling Higurashi had, atmosphere got better. now the last two episodes are in full Hig mode.
Im enjoying this alot, wont be kicking Higurashi out of my top 5 but its still good.

I stopped reading the manga at about this point to enjoy the rest of the show first.
don't know why I thought it but would be hilarious if
the solution of 15 years ago was two people in the class falling in love ha

Is this the ep I think it is...The one focusing on

I'm losing track.

For all the time they spent building toward all this Sasami stuff the end result felt ultimately somewhat inconsequential but I guess she needed to get her own episode just like everyone else.

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki 10

Everyone except Ryo-Ohki. Until now, that is. It's a good thing I'm already furry for Hosoda.

Have I mentioned how much I love the background work on display here? Take a look at this shot, for instance:

It lingers on screen for all of two seconds but it's such an arresting composition you can't help but commit it to memory. I mean, just look at it! It's so crazy and otherworldy. I love it.

And that's just one example out of many.

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki 12

One thing Ive noticed is that this show has a tendency to handwave away any explanations to stuff it doesn't feel like lingering on any more than it absolutely has to. Twice now they've used the "Yeah they occupy the same body. Moving on" card. And move on we do.

Lovey dovey Ryoko is most definitely hnng.

I guess the biggest takeaway here is to always bet on Mihoshi. Also, that Jurai royalty family tree must be one impossibly tangled mess.

And speaking of tangled messes, I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to go from here. Talk about a fragmented franchise.

Inu X Boku SS 5: Sugita's character really made this a lot more amusing than usual. Everything can be classified as S or M! Needs more of this and the rest of the apartment's residence.

Papa 6: A little reprieve from the confines of one university student's tight apartment when the gang heads back to their old house. Was a little more usadrop this week which is nice to have. Fanservice is still there though. Sako is still creeping on them nieces and now even the 3 year old. Looks like Raika finally meets them next episode. Hopefully that'll be fun times.

Highschool DxD 7: The animation during that dodgeball game was sure unimpressive. The healing scene was good though. The latter half where they find servants for the newbie demons Asia and brotag was a lot funnier than I was expecting. Poor Slime monster. Its ability to dissolve clothes and brotag's perversion deserved each other. Pouring out a 40 for that.

Guilty Crown 17: Why would you even keep those two terrible dudes as high ranked guards Shu. Why.
So glassesguy takes advantage of Arisa sexually inexchange for items in which she can use to stage a coup against our terrible Tyrant. They execute their plan to get out and succeed. Shu gets betrayed for being a douche and Gai cuts off his arm.
Happy end.

Symphogear 6-7: The friendship between Hibiki and Miku start to get shaky as the whole relic and noise thing gets out in the open while Hibiki and Tsubasa get closer. Turns out Chris is just being used like a fool with some grand delusion that she'll stop wars with what she's doing. (How does summoning noise to disintegrate people factor into that I'm not sure). The bad engrish came about once again as Fine donned some gold armor relic. The fights are still kinda cool I guess with Chris's relic being some gatling guns + missiles combo (the armor looks way better than the Neshutanwhatever one). I guess I'm still enjoying the show. Chris is dumb though and the scene with the lost kids bleh.

The only bad part is that you're coming up to what I at least considered to be the slump episodes of the series. They're not terrible by any means, but man were they such a downer after the awesome of 16. It'll get back to those levels of awesome again though, so do not worry.

The artistry of the original OVA series was quite lovely, the paintings were all very intricately detailed brimming with imagination. ^_^

If you want to finish the rest of this continuity you'll need this. Its not great but I liked it better than most of the other continuities.

My two guesses are
1) the dead person's spirit has to be put to rest and 2)the dead person has to die/be killed.

That's what I'm thinking too. I think
that's what the guy in the bar was alluding to when he was talking about how he had to do it, and that he saved everyone. It clearly bothered him, whatever it was he did, and that likely goes with killing someone. Even if it's for the greater good.

Hmmm, yes but
I'm kind of confused how you can kill someone who is already dead. Maybe its all just symbolic? Nobody is really an undead but they call the person who is the "extra" an undead?

Well they are inhabiting a body, perhaps that way? I mean yeah that's confusing, and I could be totally wrong and killing them just makes them respawn or something. Rekill? Now I'm confused. >>

Zero no Tsukaima F 4-5:

Saito, can I say you're a jerk? 'Cause you totally are. And I don't mean that in a "You have so many women around you I envy you you jerk!", I mean like he's an actual jerk. He's nothing but sweet talk when he's alone with Louise, but then suddenly
the much hotter Princess magically appears in his new home and BAM! Making out and shit. Seriously all the talk of him being in love with Louise is total bullocks. Thus, he's a jerk. So there, neener neener neener!

I finally finished the Penguindrum part of the Speakeasy podcast. Despite my complaints about the actual content it was thoroughly entertaining. It made up for the lack of academic research with hot-blooded enthusiasm. Nonetheless there are some problems:
  • Dismissing people who don't like the show as "they don't get it" is probably a bad stance to take (even if I agree to a certain extent about how the majority of complaints are directed to what Penguindrum wasn't and not what it managed to be).
  • Didn't they explicitly say the Penguindrum itself was
    love
? So why all the juggling in the middle of the discussion?
  • There's no reason that a dub wouldn't have the same problems as the subs already do. That has nothing to do with the format of the localisation and everything with the quality of the people at work.
Still enlightening, and I would very much recommend it to fans of the cartoon. It made me miss Penguindrum Thursdays.
A few things to note here.

Firstly, of course this kind of thing has been a problem since the opening episode - no-one complained about it more than I at the time. However, the show had really begun ratcheting it down from that initial episode so it (seemed) like something the show might have eventually been done two.
It seems to me like Lagrange only really has two modes: mecha mode or moé mode. The only reason the otaku-baiting had stopped for a while was because the animators were too busy animating robots and not silly girly stuff like skinny-dipping.
Two, having a really silly, light-hearted first episode is at least tonally consistent. Once you start going the 'dark, brooding route' it's not as acceptable to just drop the fanservice in there.
I had fun calling her Muginanami several times during the flashback, alghouh it didn't make sense.

Maybe I can help complicating things with post modern reasoning.
As we find storys more accurate at depicting and observing real life which content both comedic and tragic aspects.
So a show that uses both the most light hearted fluff and the grimmest tragedy porn, might just be closer to a virtual animated reality.

Also a perverted otaku, such as I shamefully am, might just find his best representation as an eel in the all girls school swimming pool.
I think the difference in opinions here is that in my eyes the show hasn't taken a dark, brooding route yet. It has hinted at it through not-so-subtle foreshadowing and out-of-place flashbacks, but the overall tone of the show remains just as light-hearted. Mood whiplash hasn't set on firmly enough for me to notice it.

It's not like
the ghost is some incorporeal phantasm. It looks, acts, and feels alive. And if the ghost wasn't functionally alive, then all it'd take to identify the ghost is a routine physical and maybe an x-ray or something.

Bakemonogatari PSP incoming

Namco Bandai's latest PSP conversion for a light novel that's also an anime is for Nisio Isin's Bakemonogatari.

Dengeki PlayStation reveals this week that a PSP conversion of the vampire-themed franchise will be released under the expected name of Bakemonogatari Portable. The conversion will feature 3D polygon characters, recreations of scenes from the anime, and two player support via ad-hoc (it's unclear if this is for co-op, battle, or both).

The game's genre is listed as "Under Investigation." Rather than indicating that Namco Bandai is currently considering what genre to classify the game under, this may actually be the genre.

Bakemonogatari Portable will be released on August 23, priced ¥6,280 for its regular package and ¥9,980 for its limited edition.

Bold one: I always toss the opinion of anyone who takes this blanket stance out of the window, admittedly. I feel like it's the narrative's job to be as approachable as possible without crossing the line of unimaginative /dull, and the ones that don't are aptly labeled esoteric--which I believes to come with a negative connotation by default. There's varying degrees to that, of course, but the farther away it is the term in general, the better I believe a piece to be.

Bold two: From what I've seen, honest intellectuals are never sure, man; conclude until you reach the 'right' conclusion, and still continue to wonder about it, I guess.
