Yeah, this. I usually get responses like how it looks too "goofy, childish, or weird".
But if I nag somebody enough that they start reading/watching OP, they'll eventually find the art style charming haha.
Art is subjective, but the only reason why people say One Piece's art style is because "it's too cartoony" which is barely a subjective statement. You mean to tell me that single outing an entire sect of the entire comic and animation medium is in every way acceptable? Sorry, but no. Preferring anime style just because it's anime style just means you're a weeaboo who can't accept something different that isn't anime. If you prefer "realistic" styles then you might as well not be into the medium in the first place. Everyone here must hate Disney and Looney Tunes or something cause it's "too kiddy."

I'm going to take SOOO much flak for this, but fuck it. I can say without a doubt that the 4Kids dub had the best voices that fit what I *imagined* the characters to sound like. How ironic the dub got that right, in my eyes, and yet fucked absolutely everything else up.

This is very true for me. Quite often I would have to blow up the screen to see what was going on because there was so much shit in the panels. Naruto has been guilty of this from time to time as well. I never have a problem with Bleach, which isn't surprising given that Bleach and backgrounds are a rare concept for Kubo.

America is a different audience, OP art is a turn off, when I first read OP i didn't like the art, it took some time for me to just get used to it.

IIRC the dub didn't even sound that bad imo (except Sanji's "brooklyn" accent lol). What was really fucked up about the 4kids attempt was as you said: everything else.

Admittedly it HAS been a long time since I heard them, so my memory might be a little foggy. But I don't have memories of despising the voices, more with the retarded amounts of edits, like the lollipop holy shit. I'll probably just watch something on Youtube see if my opinion changes.
Lolwat, this is just factually wrong, Osamu Tezuka has an extremely wide range of character designs and has definitely made "goofy" characters. As for the One Piece characters, only very few of them look "goofy" which is, you know, the intent. No one is supposed to feel intimidated by Buggy the clown for example. Most characters in OP look fucking badass and ridiculous at the same time like the Admirals, various villains, the Shichibukai, etc. etc.
Exact same thing happened to me. I tried to watch OP when it was first shown here, but I just couldn't keep at it. It wasn't the art (though I do see many people say its a turn-off) per se, but my first impression was that the style was goofy (dialogue, and concept).
How wrong I was though. I started from scratch in 2010 watching the subbed eps this time, and by the time I hit Nami's arc, it just amazed me. Mostly because at that point, it felt more dramatic than Naruto (lol), and Bleach (LOL). As I kept going it started to be funnier too. It wasn't just mindless action, or some swift "cool" sword swing with inserted smugs.
As for OP's art, I really love it now. Take Blackbeard for example. Luffy's opposite (first meeting was hilarious), shown physically, even though they almost seem alike. I love how tall the higher-ups in the marines are too, it really shows how they aren't regular people. When you do meet someone who looks normal, you know they're a badass (Hawkeye, Shanks). It definitely tries not to look boring.
My 2 cents anyway. To each their own!

To be fair outside of the obviously ridiculous character designs, the standard human character designs aren't very cartoony. Whimsical maybe, but not really cartoony

Do you not have friends who have differing opinions than you? I mean yes, I know some who aren't One Piece fans because they're not a fan of the art but for goodness sake, like many here I agree that art is subjective and I'm not surprised if some are turned off by it due to the aesthetics.
And remember, some. It's the most popular manga by far in Japan at the moment, so you can argue that fans of One Piece ARE those bullshit weeaboos you keep lamenting about.

1) I did not like the art.
2) The whole universe seemed too cartoony for my taste -- not style wise.
I know this is kind of stupid to go into, especially in manga, but I just never got a sense of any real physical law in One Piece. You have people taking all kinds of damage, and then the next second a character dies from falling down the stairs. I just... never got a sense of danger or law anywhere. It just all felt silly.

One Piece is popular in Japan because it has widespread appeal and nothing else, it doesn't target a specific series of niches like most manga do. Animu manga #201285 appeals to otaku, but One Piece appeals to a large variety of people especially kids and families.

Ah hell, I'm out of this argument. I know most here know what I was going about anyway, so I'll leave it at that.
Now this is full of shit. No, sorry, but that's not how it works. It's completely viable to say you like or dislike something by giving actual grounds for it, especially art. Considering actual drawing something is a process and can actually be fucked up, you could easily point out that something has wrong proportions. For example Hirohiko Araki sometimes has problems with proportions and perspective, but that doesn't stop me from saying his art is "awesome looking" or "appealing." Sure I can say it and leave it at that, but it isn't an opinion, and it never will be. A claim first has to have grounds to it for it to ever become an opinion.

You do have a point there, it has the RPG quality when it comes to damage. A character might not have died due to being hit by a fucking huge hammer, or a lightning strike but in the next chapter a stab wound becomes fatal.
It's a shame though. The story is quite amazing, and the amount on detail is staggering. Hopefully you'll come back to it later in the future.

THe hell there isn't a difference. I hate to use this example, but it makes the most sense of what I'm talking about. Take Star Wars for example, the movies (especially the prequels) aren't really that great as story, but the lore, background and setting are MUCH more interesting and appealing.
Yeah but all the lore from the Star Wars series comes from the various Expanded Universe storyline sources, which are off mixed quality admittedly, but all come from a story. You can't really portray the setting that way unless you make it be read like an encyclopedia like a wiki or a table-top RPG book, neither of which has OP really been made into...except for OP wikia. But all the details from OP wikia are gained from the anime/manga.
